God, I loved living in LA - for 30 years. I moved because so many of my closest friends either moved or died and my neighborhood was beginning to be a sad place for me, and plus traffic became unbearable, my neighborhood ion Hollywood got crazy crowded with giant new buildings and no space around them, and it just got so expensive. So, I bought a house in an adjacent state and pay less mortgage than I paid rent in my small Hollywood apartment. Speaking of Nobody' Walks in LA... a song sung by Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons)- She was standing in front of me in line to pay for groceries at "Rock N Roll Ralph's" at Sunset & Poinsettia Place (my street) in the late 80's or early 90's.

being born and raised in Los Angeles, I have encountered many different hidden stairscases like these in Lincoln Heights, Highland Park, Montecito Heights, El Sereno, City Terrace, Mt.Washington, Mt. Hermon, Eagle Rock, Glassell Park, Atwater Etc. There are so many of them in Los Angeles and L.A.County. My parent's house is near one of these old staircases. We use to have to climb up and down them to get to and from school.

I used to live in Echo Park and was a member of the Historical Society there. As I recall, city planning followed a grid pattern in the 1880s, when EP's streets were laid out. Due to the steep angle of the hills, staircases were used where roads could not run. I climbed several of the ones still around, living a block from the Kite Hill stairs. In contrast, Silverlake was laid out in the 1890s when the grid pattern gave way to following the contours of the geography. That is why EP has straight, steep roads while Silverlake has roads that wind their way around and why stairs are more numerous in EP than in S-lake.

The narrator names the Kite Hills stairs as the Baxter Stairs at 8:30 - I forgot about the name for them.

very interesting revelation. Edendale was what I think atleast the Echo Park main area was referred to as back then, and maybe even included some of what's Silverlake today.

My first home was in Echo Park, corner Robinson and Ellesmere. On the latter street across from our quadplex was the only russian orthodox church in L.A. at the time.. When Rimsky-Korsokoff died he was there until his remains were shipped to NYC. I was an infant so couldn't pay my respects.

There is a cool staircase in W. LA by my old place in Palms. Close to the 10 freeway and Overland. If you are at the intersection of Overland and Woodbine, head West 4 blocks or so. Then, go North about 4 or 5 blocks until you run into the hill. Steps are in that area, taking you up into the more expensive neighborhood above. I used to wake up from weed naps and walk up the stairs and the above neighborhood in a haze to sober up.. Ahhhhh, memories. ✌❤🌴

Hills... she says. More like mountains, but take a trek to cities like Chattanooga, Pittsburgh and other locations built alongside high-terrain, and you'll find stairs, or switchback roads that allow a rigorous workout and seclusion.

This is what I call my sacred place, cause I come out here when I feel like being by myself. I used to come here with Karen Cross, she's kinda like my girlfriend, or used to be. We used to come out here and hold hands and talk and read books to each other with a flashlight. She don't wanna have nothing to do with me in front of people cause I don't have any money.

I am appalled at how the newer land barons (Owners) don’t take care in keeping the old city planning. Destroyed are Streetcar right of ways and other transportation via’s. Causing traffic jams and tie-ups. Railroads for freight were dismantled. Allowing trucks to take-over delivery services are becoming slower, unreliable, more expensive than railroads. Private manufacturers have sold their properties due to city taxes and excise tax charges. Making it harder for these businesses to continue. Politics became more prevalent to control some aspects of privatized small Community based and supportive businesses. (Usually the price of rent, local taxes, utilities) Small businesses are an important part of the community. They employ people and donate to local causes. A lot of cities seem to weed out small local manufacturing businesses. Because of their lack of interest in keeping them viable. More interests in dealings with China. A subject too immense to comment. Focuses now is on the housing market. It is commonplace to see cubical shops at street level and residences above. Affordable housing to become unaffordable. Driving renter’s to pay outlandish amounts. (Higher than most people’s jobs pay their employees) What happened to Los Angeles?

We mexicans walk since the aztec empire when California was México.I walked the streets of L.A. myself and used public transportstion to get from downtown to north hollywood all the time.walking for me is getting the excercise that sometimes i don't have time to do because busy in work and college.yes i sweat in my clean clothes alot but at least i get my dose of exercise and i can hit 2 or 3 birds with one shot.Get my work done, college and excercise.nothing new, that's how we mexicans hit the streets if you don't have a personal car at the moment.
