For PDF:guitarreferenceguide.com/inde... In this video I teach you how to play Little Martha by Duane Allman. I consolidate two guitar parts into one so there are some challenging stretches. Enjoy and thank you for your support!

Certainly above where I am now, BUT the VERY BEST instructional guitar video I've ever seen! ... and played so well that it does justice to one of the greatest guitarists in my opinion that unfortunately lived much too short a life. Thanks much Shawn.

My favorite acoustic piece. Thanks for consolidating both parts, and your instruction was perfect and easy to understand. Now to perfect it over time, as my forte is rhythm strumming with a pick rather than finger-picking - but this is achievable now thanks to you!

Thank you so much, I learned this in the late 70s and knew I was missing key parts. You’ve unlocked it for me.. beautiful playing!!!

9:29 That pinky on 9th fret, middle finger on 7th fret is much easier if you just take your barre finger off and play 2nd and 3rd strings open. Exact same notes....10x easier.

most exultante . i play this exactly as you do for the most part of this song though i use slight varying finger positions for the slides hammers and pulls, capo 2nd fret. i got the arrangement from the leo kottke take of this tune out of the guitar techniques magazine years ago, late 90's. and used that arrangement as a template to figure out the greg and dicky original. and of course youtube has helped no end with varying brews and miss hearings by others and i myself included . a few years back when i was nerding this tune big time, trying to figure the dicky betts flavoure hidden within the tune. and he is there in the mix. i came to realise while i jammed along chuffed with myself as i stepped into each footprint just copycating who's playing the dobro?, and how many comps are spliced into the mix-down. damn genius.

Thanx. But, for the benefit of those who do not use the open tuning, lets mention that it can easily be performed in standard tuning as well: start with the "open" G major, no barring, high E string pressed with pinky and low E string pressed with ringer, both on a 3d fret, middle finger on a 5th string/second fret; from that position you add a second string/1st fret with your index, then the pinky goes to the third fret/second string...followed by "open" D major7 etc. (other "details" will come "naturally" if you just follow the melody in your mind). Second part starts with the bar on a 5th fret and is done within A major "position" (your left hand's index keeps pressing all strings on 5th fret), your pinky, middle and ringer hammer-on 6th,7th and 8th fret along the first 3 strings (E, B, G) while the thumbs pics 5th and 4th... These are only rough directions, guidelines, not the thorough explanations, sorry...The ending basically consists of C major/D major/G major and the harmonics (known as "flageolets" in French) played on the 12th fret. Do a bit of experimentation, and you'll make it.

Wow this was 8 years ago? Goes to show ya how timeless great music is! Great Instructional video here. I'll never get the finger strumming right, cut my right arm open back in 79. It severed my ulnar nerve (funny bone). After a tendon transfer to my right hand, physical therapy only did so much. My last 2 fingers on my right hand are basically just for looks, can't open or close them much. But I could still wing it. I just gotta make myself set down and watch this over and over again each day. I'll pick it up fairly quickly for a novice. I've just been a hack mostly but enjoy playing. I really love this instrumental, it's beautiful. To learn this would be a new level for me. Thanks much for taking the time to do this for us. Today is Thanksgiving 2020. Hope this finds you well 8 years later, and in the middle of the most trying times of our lives. Be safe and well..

Very close interpretration amazing Duane Allman wrote this song when he was so young I think 23.Very hard to capture both guitars in one, its done well here.I have been trying on and off for years trying all sorts of different ways to satisfy myself mostly to play this piece with one guitar. Playing it harmonically and musically close is difficult with one instrument.I think its is acheived much easier with two guitars like they did originally on the studio recording.To get the same harmonic tones with one guitar is a challenge but doable as interpretated here.I think Duane used a low action hand fingered Dobro for this piece but not sure sounds like it on the intro.Anyway nice job here well played...... Glenn P. in N.Y.

That extension to the A at 9:32 - I find it easier to just lift all my fingers off and just pluck the open 2nd and 3rd strings. Faster as well.

thanks for the refresher. use to play this song all the time, got the tab out of a mag.,same arrangement. but its not the D string anymore if you tune it up to E, i'm confused enough already without stiken the seventh into the mix

Great solo guitar version! Dickey Betts played along in this song also? Nice full sound.
@obscurefuckinname10 жыл бұрын
if i have a favorite song this is it! i prefer to tune to open D and capo on the 2nd fret, less strain on the B string. it sounds like Duane himself taught you this!
@jamesdonahue10347 жыл бұрын
The playing is excellent, however it is sometimes difficult to see where your fingers are and you don't always designate certain strings, fingers, and frets. I would suggest putting a fretboard in the corner of the screen that simultaneously shows tab when you play

I play it in regular tuning. This guy is top notch.

Duane did it i in the key of E Major, and the guitars are tuned in an Open E Tuning
@snotpu5 жыл бұрын
I am not clear on how Duane played this. Did he use open D tuning, with capo on first fret, or did he do open E tuning down a half step to an open Eb tuning?

Open E tuning then tune up a half step or open e tuning capo 1st fret.

Any tips on nailing the 5th fret bar section?
@Guitarreference5 жыл бұрын
This is one of the hardest parts to get smoothly. Big stretch and strong hands to keep the pressure so it all rings out. I would isolate that section and if possible play it in a loop at the slowest tempo you can get it. Be careful to not over do do it. A great song to help with the stretch is message in a bottle by the police. Hope this helps. Thanks for checking out my video. Shawn
