Richard likes to say there wouldn't be any rock-n-roll without him but it actually existed before he started out; it just hadn't been introduced to white audiences. During Richard's heyday Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Elvis also contributed to laying the cornerstone of rock-n-roll.

Little Richard passed away today, at 87. Otis was one of the few other stars from Macon, Georgia. Richard's not really a speech-maker, so he did it his way, and was just wonderful. @@dipdawg1378 Man, I need to ask you for your autograph. If you are interested, I am going to share something with you that I have seldom shared with others. In 1964, the Government feared an outbreak of yellow fever and/or malaria could result from our troops (GOD BLESS THOSE TROOPS) returning home from Vietnam. They initiated a program known as the Aedes Aegypti Erradication Programto seek out potential areas that were favorable breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that carried the diseases. They hired high school aged young people to go DOOR TO DOOR and get permission to look for likely areas. The places for development were things like bird baths, old auto tires...anything that could hold water. We were given "puff bottles" containing powdered DDT to spray on the surface of the water when we found the wigglers (larva). I was one of those hired for that summer job. One day that summer I was dropped off in the only upscale neighborhood in Macon for Black Americans. I remember this like it was yesterday. Given the fact that I am 71 yoa, that says something about how much Otis Redding meant to this white dude. I walked up to the front door of this nice brick home (fenced and gated), rang the door bell and there he stood! Otis Redding answered the door! I was stunned and just stood there....I lost the ability to talk. This imposing man, this "gentle man," grinned and looked at me and said "son, whatcha need?" I made a fool out of myself trying to explain why I was there. Finally, I got it out. He said "you recognize me don't you?" I said "yes sir you're the Big O." I went around to the gate and he let me in and walked around and talked to me....genuinely interested. D.D., this really happened, not a bunch junk. Years later, I found out that meeting him at the residence was a fortunate "draw of the cards." The residence was someone in his family's. I never found out if it was his wife's and childrens, or someone else. He had actually moved to Los Angeles, but he returned to Macon often. I guess that really was my lucky day. When he died in that plane crash it was a sad, SAD, day for Macon and for me. Son, if your mother is still alive, please share this with her. I shouldn't have posted this much on KZfaq, but after reading your comments, I couldn't help but take advantage. And thank you so much for your comments. I have seldom shared this with others, because what is important to me is not always important to others. GOD bless you and your family.

Little Richard; December 5, 1932 - May 9, 2020 "Little Richard passed away this morning from bone cancer in Nashville, at age 87. He was living with his brother in Nashville," Dick Alen (Little Richard's manager) tells PEOPLE. "He was battling for a good while, many years. I last spoke to him about two or three weeks ago. I knew he wasn’t well but he never really got into it, he just would say 'I’m not well.' He’s been suffering for many years with various aches and pains. He just wouldn’t talk about it much.” Kelvin Holly, a longtime member of the musician's band, shared a touching tribute on social media. "Rest in peace Richard. This one really stings. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my bandmates and fans all over the world. Richard truly was the king!"

And even still... Richard sold millions worldwide at a time that was unheard of. He MADE Rock & Roll. I want to be clear here. He brought up James Brown and Otis and Mick like Rodney Dangerfield helped so many comics come up through the business and share ideas together. Elvis and them folk made it popular in civil, normal society later. See, it turned out that the Status Quo didn't realize how many fringe elements there really were and what they truly enjoyed. I'm telling you this from the perspective of a young person whose mother literally grew up during this period and honestly never understood the hype for Elvis or The Beatles even. Mick Jagger, James Brown, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard-- You guys need to better research The Day The Music Died. These people were inventing new music that you now enjoy. Akira Kurosawa has notably amazing musical taste and he was heavil influenced by Jazz and Western Culture. That's why he plays so well here. He's rated pretty average in Japan.
