What’s happening in this Little Women movie clip?
Laurie (Timothée Chalamet from Call me by your name and Beautiful Boy) is visiting Amy (Florence Pugh) to apologize for his behavior and urges her not to marry Fred but instead marry him. Though in love with Laurie, Amy refuses, upset at always being second to Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird and Brooklyn).

What’s the movie Little Women about?
In nineteenth-century Massachusetts, with their father away serving in the Civil War, the women of the March family - the loving matriarch, Marmee (Laura Dern from Mask and Wild), and her four daughters, Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird and Brooklyn), Meg (Emma Watson from Harry Potter and Secret Circle), Amy (Florence Pugh from The Falling), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) - are left all alone to fend for themselves. Faced with genteel poverty, the fledgeling author, Jo March, is struggling to make a name for herself in male-dominated New York City; considerate Meg is now married, and the artistically inclined, Amy, is in Paris with their affluent Aunt March (Meryl Streep from Out of Africa and The Iron Lady). However, the news of talented Beth's illness will reunite the sisters under the same roof. But, more than anything in the world - much to the disappointment of the handsome next-door neighbour, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence (Timothee Chalamet from Call me by your name and Beautiful Boy) - the fiercely independent Jo yearns for freedom.

The line "you're being mean" is the perfect line for this moment, for this dynamic. It gives me chills everytime I see it. Just the way they grew up together and had this childlike playfulness for a lot of their relationship as they grew, to this moment now when they're both older. The idea of Laurie "being mean"is such a beautiful way of intertwining the innocence of their relationship with their now adult sense of intensity. Brilliant choice of words.

You’re so right. Her saying he was being mean reminded me of something a child would say, which is what she was when she first met and fell in love with him. It brings it full circle and reminds you of the past, while still being in the present.

I also notice when Jo rejected him, she pointed out the facts that they are not compatible, but also points the gun at her quirks and oddities, diminishing the the fact the Laurie is also too selfish to acknowledge her feelings and reasons Amy rejected him and straight up calling him out for being mean and again thinks only of his own feeling. I just love the contrast between the two pairings. One is unconditionally support and one is fixing what's broken. As childish as Laurie is potrayed in this movie, I think it's justified that he deserves the latter treatment

They tried in smaller ways, like the way Amy directly introduced herself to Laurie when he brought Jo and the injured Meg home from the party. Also when she was outside his window after her punishment in school. They should have included a longer conversation between the two of them before her family came to pick her up. I would have liked a letter writing montage during the time they were apart in France to show their growing closeness and not just their difficult moments.

It speaks volumes on how... it was always really there. Almost blatantly. You are talking to Laurie, hanging around with him, but that kind of tension is always there. I don't know if it's about him or it's about having a lengthy social interection between a man and a woman (especially at the time), but it almost feels like all he had to do was raising an eyebrow and the other would go "are you proposing?" And, I mean, he could be right. It may be a stretch but it could have happend with Meg too.

I love this scene mainly because of Florence's acting skills, the way she almost cried while finally admitting she loved him, the way she just violently threw her things on the ground and her face expression, all of this combined together created a highly emotional scene and it made us understand her character better.

I love watching both proposal scenes back to back. Laurie's proposal to Amy is completely different from the one he made to Jo. When he proposed to Jo he was a child. Desperate to make his case, getting emotional in the process. He talked so much his proposal escalated into a debate/argument with her. He spoke so intensely and fervently that he ran out of breath. But with Amy, all he says is "Don't marry him. Why? You know Why." He delivers the words calmly. Softly, and with finality. He doesn't pour his heart out in a long, extensive monologue. He doesn't explicitly state his feelings with a long tirade in a raised voice. He doesn't need to. He's not a child anymore. He's a man proposing to a woman who knows exactly how he feels because they've learned how to read each other. That's what real love is. Knowing how the other person feels without them having to state it out loud.

it seems more a matter of with Jo, he knew it was a longshot she would say yes, because he was more into her than she was into him with Amy, it was the opposite, he knew she was way more into him than he was into her. and tbh, that's the smarter option with less stress, always go with someone who is more into you than you are into them.

the best thing about the garden scene is how in love laurie is the entire time. his soft smile at 0:24, the way he says "I'm looking at you" right after. even though the words may sound sarcastic, he says it with so much love and sincerity in his voice, like he really is just looking at her and admiring her. i also love how he says "don't marry him" instead of smth like "marry me" because it really seemed like he didn't know how else to say it, and he was so caught up in his emotions that he just said whatever was in his heart. plus the connection that he and amy have is so palpable, like the way she instantly understands what he really meant, and the way his voice is soft this entire scene, especially when he says "yes" in response to her "no". him reaching out to touch her so gently was also beautiful, and the way he has to walk away to clear his head a lil and comes back as soon as he says the words at 1:59 like something has lifted off his chest>> this is an amazing film that is so perfectly crafted and acted, genuinely my favorite hollywood film so far, hats off to greta gerwig for pulling this off p.s florence pugh and timothee chalamet are amazing and have damn good chemistry, and i hope they're cast again in another film together

So true. I've neber rooted for them before. I think it also works because it actually leads with Louisa May Alcott's feminism & a better understanding of Jo, so we aren't wondering why she doesn't or cant love Laurie. The context is everything
@writerspen010
@writerspen010 3 ай бұрын
@@lauralouwhooo Framing the movie around Alcott's feminism and real life struggles with her publishers was GENIUS. Personally, I never shipped Jo with Laurie. To me it was always clear that she viewed him like a brother and that he didn't understand her enough to be a partner to her (i.e. him daring to suggest that she didn't need to write unless she wanted to if they did marry--this was not something she did only to help financially support her family--and using their families to pressure her into accepting, etc.). I never strongly shipped her with Professor Bhaer (too much of a student/teacher thing going on for my taste), but he's who I preferred, since they were more like-minded and could become greater intellectual equals as Jo became more acquainted with the world and her craft. If anything, this framework provides so much context for why _Amy_ loves him and how Laurie grew to love her as more than a kid sister. I'm still not solidly on board with these two, since Laurie is too fixated on being a member of the March family after growing up without much family around him, but this pairing makes sense to me, and Amy could fit into Laurie's world far better than Jo could ever hope to.

Laurie was so lost and he found a home with these sisters, to the extent that he couldn't imagine not marrying one of them. I never truly got the impression that he wholly loved Amy as an individual, and she'll always know Jo was his first choice, but somehow it didn't matter. There was so much between them that their happiness was as real as anyone else's.
@TheGeekMonster

I agree. I think Laurie loved Jo best, but she didn't love *him* best. She loved him as a friend, a brother. They never would have worked out. Jo's wild temper needed a steady, calm partner. She and Laurie would have been like two reckless children in adult bodies. They'd have fought and bickered, and perhaps had some passionate moments, but they'd never have properly grown into adults together. She needed the maturity of Prof Behr and he needed Amy's steady focus.

I think he eventually did grow out of Jo and realised the love he felt for her was as a friend. Seems like he was only enchanted by her because she was so different from most girls her age. There was a natural shift where he realized his feelings for Amy and moved on from Jo. it didn’t feel like he was settling or that he saw Amy as second choice, it seemed as if they were meant to be all along.
@msk-qp6fn

@@TheGeekMonster Or they just both needed to grow up. I had this talk once as a child regarding Jo and Laurie's marriage and Marmee's comment how they are too similar that there will be chaos and that both Jo and Laurie need someone with calmer personality. As a child 8~9 years of age I just agreed with Marmee even if I wished Jo and Laurie eventually did get married, my mom commented if anything a hothead and a cool bean would clash more and it is preferable for similar people with similar personalities and standards to marry. She said in the case Jo and Laurie is that these two are similar in personality, the only problem was that both were too young to realize when and where to compromise.

The way they look at each other in silence and then smiled discreetly like something between them that is so comfortably shared. His soft eyes, the way he lies down on the ground and swings a little, a little naughty and soft and truly like mature connection ❤😢🥹 still, Amy gets back to being a strict person to help form Laurie more to a realistic and practical path, or at least learning to deal with his life in a more deserving way
