How To Tie Tent Guy Lines

Learn how to tie a tent guy line easily, with two simple knots (or with one knot and the plastic slider).

I (Jon - the guy in the video) originally learned these knots years ago in Boy Scouts (I'm an Eagle Scout), and I'm excited to be able to share them with you. I love knot tying and outdoor skills, and so I also made a playlist of other knot tutorials on my channel. We'll also be covering outdoor skills like campfire cooking, orienteering, and more.

I am going on my first solo camping trip next week. I successfully set up my brand new tent last night in my backyard, but could not figure out how to do the guylines. This was so helpful!

I'm new to camping, thank you! I never knew how to use those guy lines that came with my tent. Fortunately staking it down was sufficient on my last camping trip. But I'll guy it out this time just because now I know how. Lol.

Have you ever had any issues using the taut line hitch with tent stakes that aren't as smooth, like the hex type stakes with groves instead of the Shepard hook type ones u have in your video? Thanks Love you videos, keep them coming for all of us!

Man, I think I didn't buy a guy line. Dang thing was beside the tent section so I guess it was the line. I bought a paracord. Is it still possible to use it as a guy line?

No, sorry. I haven’t made one on that yet. To some extent, you can use the position of the guy line loops (that are attached to the tent) as a guide. If you see the loop, you can run a guy line there. And some tents even have the guy lines pre attached. I hope that helps as a starting point!

For 60 plus years I always thought the rabbit came out of the hole, around the tree, back in the hole again. Now you're telling me the rabbit goes in the hole, around the roots, and comes back up out of the hole?

I still dont understand what the guy lines are for. I need some live visualization to realize its purpose.

They are to keep your tent from deforming/blowing away in high winds/storms. Depending on your tent, some of the lower guy lines expand areas of your rain fly for ventilation and better water resistance by pulling the fly away from the inner tent.
