The bird is some sort of doctor, who gives this sick girl medicine to make her feel better, though he knows she's incurable (and feels immensely morose and cries). Rather than just coldly come out and say it, he leaves it to her to go through the stages of grief to come to terms with her mortality on her own (the whole storm/woods/dream sequence). Once death's tune comes, she finds its a sweet and happy tune, and she is ready and able to accept her fate. she finds tranquility and happiness once she comes to him because she has embraced the inevitable rather than fight it and continue to suffer (symbolically death lures her to the top of the hill, and she drops the worldly medicine back down below). Sad but bittersweet. The lesson that you there are inevitable things in this world, most notably mortality, that you cannot change or prevent, so you'll be happiest if you can accept them when the time comes rather than resist and fight. That's what I get out of it anyway.

Every time I watch this, I see myself as the bird. It takes me back to the years leading up to my mom's death from a terminal illness. I was her primary caregiver during that time. And so I know the deeply inexorable pain of the bird as he hands to the girl a bag of medicine that he knows will never save her, and may in fact prolong her suffering. When in her presence, he tries very hard to maintain an air of hopeful optimism - he wishes to encourage her - but, the moment he is left alone to ponder the situation, he can do little else but cry at its hopelessness. As my mom's illness progressed, we journeyed to one place after another. We enjoyed the world together while we still could though all along, the black cloud of death hung low in every horizon. And so while I continued to live in denial about the chances of my her recovery, my mom had long since been ready for her climb up the hill. As she ascended, her bag of medicine fell loose from her hands and, in that moment, she embraced the song of death - a song to which she'd already known all of the words. The video doesn't show what happened to the bird, but...if his life was anything like mine, he would been nearly enticed by the same song two times or more. His spirit would have been crushed. But, in time, he would rise up stronger than before and honor the girl's memory by living to tell others about her. Without a doubt, I was/am the bird.

This song speaks to me... I've been left alone by so many people that this is my shelter song.. knowing that other people probably feel this way also is somewhat comforting.

I'm rewatching The Vampire Diaries again for probably the 4th or 5th time and it's like all the beautiful songs were missed somehow. Some I remember way back when from my childhood on old playlist but how I missed this I have no clue. Every melody in this song, the vibrations, sound, voice, everything is so impactful. From the impact of the song and beauty of it here... music has once again given life to me. I never lose that, but things like this stack more and more life into me every time. The windows of possibility is so open for me with things like this. Thank you for giving this wonder to us. To me. This speaks to my heart and opens it to so much more.

Wow, it's really incredible how people's brains can work in completely different ways. There's so many comments here about how sad this song is and how it makes people feel empty inside, while for me it's completely opposite. It makes me feel like everything's going to be okay. I find it so peaceful relaxing and warm, i really can't imagine this song evoking any negative feelings.

Makes me think the "stork," gave her the gift of life and immediately feels regret because he knows she'll lose her life one day. Walking through the rain, walking through the woods, and then dreaming of flying could possibly be a metaphor for going through day to day life. Finally as pleasures that kill us, lures the girl up the hill, she loses the gift of life, and it tumbles back down the hill for someone else.

I used to listen this song when I was in 8th grade in 2016. In my country, there's a high school entrance exam and taken as seriously as college entrance exams by people. So that year was like a hell to me newly entered puberty, constant tests/quizzes, financially broke family, war going on in neighbor countries everyone was so concerned about political issues etc. I used to read a lot dystopian novels to escape from studying, reality and everything. My friend gave me The Darkest Minds right after I finished 1984, I liked it so borrowed the other two books of the series. Then I discovered this song through the third book of the series In The Afterlight's teaser. I used to listen it all day all night, think about the books and imagine how different my life would be in an alternative universe. Today I suddenly saw it while scrolling the memories on facebook. Now I'm in college so obviously my life has changed from many aspects, but listening to it brought me back so many memories that I've forgotten long ago and I literally felt the same emptiness, mourning for a past that I never had or a future that I'll probably never have, even after all these years. I don't know why am I even telling this like duh nobody cares. Anyway such a beautiful and meaningful song, thank you Little Dragon for making this happen and helping me in my worst years.
