So a couple of things. Paint ICBs black and maybe cover with a tarp. This should help prevent algae from growing in tanks. Also realize that the water in the tanks will get pretty hot and sitting out in the sun. So to get a more equal flow of water to each tree drill a small hole by first tree then make each hole from there a little bigger. The pressure drops at each hole so making the progressive larger will help equalize flow. Good fortunes and hope it rains soon.

Great to have another chapter from you both this week. We also live in Spain (eastern Malaga province) and water is becoming a very serious issue here. Dreading to see what summer holds as I have a feeling it will be even dryer and hotter than last year. Keep the videos coming as they are ever so interesting on how you are greening your land. Seen on Instagram that you have rescued a 15 year old donkey. In South Africa, donkeys are used as watch dogs to keep leopards and lions at bay from live stock. Not sure if your new addition will be useful at keeping the boars away from the property. See you next week and keep well.

Hi Harriet, all the water work will pay off, trying to do this stuff in the summer is awful, good planning. Tree roots sense the vibration of water in the soil and grow towards it, always irrigate at the drip line of your canopy so you’re not soaking your rootball which might encourage fungal disease/ rotting off. Very ingenious solutions, I still struggle to get my head round all the different fittings 🤪

Sorting out watering is important, but sorting out what you'll do about fires is importanter 😅. You should clear a good 3 or 4 metres wide along the downhill edge of your property, especially around the tent. If you can afford it, get a petrol pump and hook it up to your main deposit or to a couple of IBCs full of water and have a long hose that will cover all that area. Keep it fuelled, start it weekly, and keep the tanks full, if using IBCs. If it's been dry over winter & spring the risk of fire will be very high. Make a plan as to what you'll do, and under what conditions you'll decide to leave. Good luck, and I hope you get some good rain!

A thought just occurred…as an experiment place a shallow container under tree drip point to get a visual of how much water the tree is getting over a given amount of time. Then you can time when to shut off water. You had ditches around the tree so you could see if tree is sufficiently watered?? This experiment sort of answers that question… Tchau tchau from Canada

Great progress! Another possibility for what to do with the ground around the trees is to make circular berms around them to form a shallow bowl with the tree in the center. When we lived in southern Sonora/the southern Sonora Desert, people used tazas around their trees, and we were thus able to keep many very mature fruit trees going even during extensive drought. You just fill the taza and the water seeps in. They’re a little easier to keep weed-free too, so there’s less competition for water. Here’s hoping for more rain!
@nienwinterpien
@nienwinterpien Жыл бұрын
On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura they dig holes for, for example grapevines, with little cresent brick walls to catch any condensation when the air cools down during the night. Is that similar?
@margaretgarigan
@margaretgarigan Жыл бұрын
@@nienwinterpien That’s interesting, but it’s different. The tazas used in Mexico are just made with soil. You form a low berm in a ring around the tree, and then when you water, you fill the shallow bowl made by the berm. The berm holds the water there while it slowly seeps into the ground.

Hiya! Another delightful video. Have a search on here for ram pump. It doesn’t use electricity and can pump uphill. (I once got lost down a YT rabbit hole watching people make ram pumps when I couldn’t sleep) They’re incredible things and pretty easy and cheap to make. Also, if you’re going to re lay that pipe, use a fish tank type of box in the holes with the pipe entering the box one side and exiting the other. It should give you access and you’ll be able to see how much silt is going through. I can’t wait to be back out to our house there in a few weeks.

Regarding watering the trees, you should buy some drip irrigation set, I know for sure there are systems with little valves that connect directly into your big water pipes in which you are drilling holes. It will help with keeping pressure on the line, conserving water and assuring a relative equal amount of water for each tree

This is a great idea to use gravity! Learnend something. Thank you! Plants are finding water, when it runs in the near. The trees will be good with the channel you dug. I'll check our height difference on the property. Maybe that will do it too. However, we have no problems with electricity in the summer. That's enough to run everything, but it would be beneficial in the winter. Last year we suffered a lot from this drought. Our well was almost empty. My garden would have been destroyed. Without our neighbor, we would have had to move away. We got water from his deep well for 2 months. I hope this year will be better. Our river has been flowing longer now than last year. I garden with straw to keep the water in the ground longer, and I also use shade cloth for the beds.

I'm always happy to see one of your videos pop up! Sneaking this one in just before bedtime as it's late in Australia. Considering any last minute winter crops here, and you look like you've been catapulted into summer! I hope you get all/most of your water sorted out for this growing season, as it seems to be the main thing holding you back. And I agree, plumbers are needed. We had a saga with a drainage pipe that always flooded when it rained and finally after many plumber visits they had to bring in an excavator and fix it. But it'll never be a problem again. It was a clogging issue, too. Consider getting a high pressure washer, if you have several access points along the pipe. The force of water may be enough to push the gunk through. Of course you'd need to put an IBC or two where you wanted to use it for water, then use your generator.... But maybe for just once a year...? Or hire/borrow one.... It's what we do now, our plumber put in a wider pipe with access points so we can blast water through it. We're expecting a multi year drought soon though, so that may not be possible well into the future.... But your spring never stops, so you should always have *some* water? I think...? Anyway, just an idea. Past 1am now lol, sleep time....

@@MauroGestoso Yeah, the IBCs would be somewhat essential as pressure washers go through a large amount of water in a short amount of time, so you'll need some sort of reservoir next to the washer. The snake things with cameras can be good but as soon as there's any significant blockage they're pretty useless. Our plumber then came back with a remote control robot which cost us a lot of money, but that only showed how blocked it was, and so it was all dug up. As you know it was flowing not long ago, I would try the pressure washer route. 👍 I really enjoy seeing both of your skills improve so much.

Hi Harriet you can get 10mm plastic pipe with or without holes and is under 20€ for 100M from your local co operative... 10mm to 3mm connections and 3mm rubber pipe with end spray outlets from Leroy Merlin if not your local place, which work very well once mastered but is hard on the hands and is easier if you heat the end of pipes with a lighter when terminating ends. Also if connected to a tap you can add timers and is then all automatic. Perfect for us as we come and go but I brought the battery powered timers from Amazon UK. Good luck and love watching your progress ❤

If you unroll the pipe it won't have the spiral and will be much easier to manage. One person has to take stand with the spool and other person should go with the other end of pipe. Person with the spool should unroll the spool so that it unravels the pipe. That way pipe doesn't have spiral and is straight. This would prevent the kinks. This should be done with stiff cables also. I wish I could show you some tips and tricks that would make the work easier.

Yo tengo cuatro bidones como esos en batería y como no los tapes para que no les de la luz solar te criara verdin dentro, y créeme que limpiar el verdin (algas) por dentro es realmente tedioso.

Love watching your videos, guys. So interesting to see your irrigation and water catchment systems. I hope you can find a sustainable way to maintain waterflow to your reservoirs. The tree irrigation looks good and I'm sure will be very helpful to have in the heat of summer. Are you planting guilds under those trees at the end there?

Not sure I'd call it a guild, in the sense it's not thought out at all haha, but just trying to make use of all the compost I put around the trees!

Think you need to go to sleep at 7 and get up early, stay warm and if you need too move things around for insulation, I am sure we all are concerned about certain days that are unfamiliar.

Looking at your IBC water containers, I assume you have ensured any used for human water consumption are cerified "BPA" free! In addition I would wrap all of the IBC containers in Black polythene to reduce algae build up in the water caused by exposure to sunlight. Just a thought!

Err they are graded for agricultural use, not sure about food grade. Not that we drink water from these ibcs but yes it still goes in the soil. I'll need to check that. I'll definitely wrap them before I properly fill them.

Some instinct tells me (having seen it numerous times) that while you very sensibly plan ahead for the drought, you shouldn't overlook safeguadring against flash floods. Why? Because whenever there are long dry spells, nature always ends up redressing the balance. Of late that's been INSANE if relatively brief storms.... flash flooding etc. Hope I'm wrong, but STAY SAFE whatever :)

Luckily enough we have a gully/ravine around the edge of our land which diverts water quickly away from us. Last year we had the heaviest rainfall per square meter ever recorded, and the gully did its job perfectly.

@@LittleSpanishFarmstead Delighted to hear it! As we've seen though, unfortunately the "most/least/driest/hottest/wettest ever..." are records that continue to be broken with alarming frequency. I saw some of the poor folks doing your thing in Portugal, and they weren't so lucky. Anyway, keep it up! We're all behind you :)

Maybe they mentioned it before and I missed it, has the farm always been offgrid? Like in they (previous owners) never had electricity brought there?

Will the water heat up in the drip irrigation with black pipes in the sun? Have you considered getting guinea fowl? My brother uses them for bug control, especially in the garden, as they won't scratch and tear up the beds like chickens do.

Yes but I'll be watering in the early morning or evening so it won't matter. We'd definitely like more birds once we build a bigger enclosure!

If you can get your pipe-system to work properly this might already be a good strategy in terms of climate adaptation in your region which will get even hotter and drier in the next years and decades. The basins will be able to catch and store heavy rain fall. Pumping up lots of water during daytime with solar power is also a great idea. I dont know if the pressure is high enough but maybe you could even use this to regain some energy into your batteries like a little pumped-storage power plant. I hope there will be some more rain before summer otherwise the bushfire risk might be a serious threat.

A question. In the last film you mentioned fires in your area. Do you or any of the people you know around you have areas cleared along the borders of your land to hinder fires spreading over your land?

We all try to! We have a track on one side which is 4m wide so that covers part of us. The rest we try and keep the whole area strimmed. But our neighbouring land on one side is just meters from our house so there's nothing we can do about that.
