"Just quit" is powerful, because I get offended at even the thought of quitting. It then begs the question "Then when will you do it?" to which the only reasonable response is "Right now."
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its an interesting thing to think about - when the thought of quitting starts causing some dissonance, there could be some part of you which wants to quit, yet doesn't want to accept it. I do still recommend being careful with quitting, very often its better to push through those low periods than it is to give up completely. Although, if there is a clear feeling that learning the language you're learning, or languages in general isn't something you enjoy doing anymore, its probably better to move on. (And that's not something to be ashamed of, as its better than not having started in the first place!) (Though I still *really* recommend to be not to jump the gun spontaneously right away when it comes to quitting)
@wertville
@wertville 3 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely not going to quit, I just think it's an interesting way to look at things. You can have so many excuses to put off or de-prioritize your studies, but if every time you did you asked yourself "Are you quitting then?" then, at least for me, I'd put in the effort just to prove I'm not.

It's a HORRIBLE tip that throws you in a downward spiral of quitting, coming back 6 months later to start over, and this goes on and suddenly 10 years have gone by and you've lost everything...
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 3 жыл бұрын
@@thechugg4372 If you keep on coming back and quitting over and over again, you've never really properly quit. There is a difference between making a confident decision that you'll never return, compared to impulsively quitting/taking a break, re-finding motivation to learn later, and then repeating the cycle. It's fine to dabble with the same language from time to time, but if not being consistent causes stress, it's better to either sticking to learning through sheer discipline or to move on and quit learning for good, without returning.

Tip #1 about disillusionment is really good advice, not just for language learning but for learning any skill. The first couple of times I tried to learn a language, I kept up a habit of convincing myself that it wasn’t worth the time and effort because of a variety of contrived reasons. “I’ll never live in that country”, or “I am shy so the mental cost of having conversations in a foreign language isn’t worth the investment” were two examples. Eventually I realized that learning a language purely for the sake of acquiring the skill and nothing else was a perfectly good reason to justify spending the time to learn it. As you said, the best way forward is to just ignore the disillusionment. I am about four years into learning Japanese now and I have no regrets about spending the time to become fluent.

Same. So far I've told around 20, not joking, 20 acquaintances about how they should learn japanese with me. Most say no, some try it but only last 1 day. It sucks because I have just been grinding it out alone for the past 2 years, and my periods of no motivation are increasing. :( Such as right now.. This video surely helped though, thanks livakivi

About Tipp Nr 8: Avoiding telling people you're learning a language: Some of my classmates found out I was learning Japanese because I had a full page of Vocabulary in my notebook and the common response to that hasn't been anything along the lines of Scenario 1: "Hey, congrats, you can do it" and more like Scenario 2: "Lol why? So you can watch Anime without subtitles or what? Fucking weeb" ...which I guess was better then scenario 1 because no euphoria rush that just stops when you're out of the honey moon phase with the language. Happened 1,5 years ago and I'm still learning so I guess I'm doing it right.

@@francoisss4773 What a bummer. Naysayers are really the worst when it comes to trying to archieve anything in life really... "Go to college and get a diploma? Too hard!", "Follow your passion and earn money as a freelancer? Not steady enough!", etc... With such a mindset it's pretty much impossible to archieve anything in life, you gotta start somewhere. Would recommend your brother not to listen to such comments but I know how hard that is when it's coming from your own parents so... Idk, maybe he should make a list with reasons why he wants to learn japanese(?) ...what helped me to get motivated is finding friends in Japan.

Some tips that I learned while struggling with depression (which kills 99% of your motivation for months): 1) Separate your lessons intro short 5min parts and do each part every hour. Do 5min at 12:00, then 5min at 1:00, then 5min at 2:00, etc. Doing 30min/day is somehow harder than doing 5min 6 times a day. 2) Reward yourself for doing your lessons. Even something as silly as buying yourself a bag of gummy bears will do. 3) Start studying early in the morning. Starting is always much harder than finishing, and doing so in the morning will help you to catch the "flow" and keep going. 4) Review what you've learned very well if you're having a bad day. It will help you to realize that you do in fact make progress, even if you don't feel like so. 5) Remember why you decided to learn a language in the first place. Maybe you wanna watch anime without subtitles, maybe you want to travel freely, maybe you want to find a foreign girlfriend/boyfriend. Don't forget that language is just a tool used to achieve something else.

6:29 Tip 8 avoid telling people. This is gold, I have told people and talk about with my family every now and then. They often listening even if they don't care. However there is a 3rd situation I can't avoid now, pressure to perform. It can be simple stuff like, "What's this word say?" Which I almost never can read because it's completely random thing they have found, or even worse "Say something in Japanese!" They have no idea what I'm even saying but they still demand it from time to time. Finally, the worst pressure you can face is being forced by your friends and family to speak to a native when you aren't comfortable/ready. This can be so crushing you might want to give up. If you tell someone your learning a language one of these things will eventually happen. You can't put the jinni back in the bottle.

My number one golden rule. Since I started learning English I could notice how people were expecting me to be proficient at it; "X is doing better than you in less amount time" or "X already handles this and that". That's why now I'm not telling anybody that I'm learning French and later Chinese. I even do the same with programming; either of my relative and close family know nothing about it, because that way nobody will expect me to do X. So guys, never tell someone what you're learning; unless colleague or University things.

I've been learning German somewhat irregularly for the past two years and I'd say I'm maybe at A2 now. I find that making the language learning fun to definitely be the most important tip. One way I've tried making it fun is by going on the German equivalent of r/me_irl (r/ich_iel) and it's pretty cool when I can understand the memes. What are some of the ways that you've tried to make language learning fun along the way?
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 3 жыл бұрын
What you did is actually a good method, I pretty much browsed the internet and various forums as well in Russian and Japanese. I've also used subtitles, dubs and translations for various media such as shows, games, movies, and I suppose even programs/operating systems. I sometimes just search for stuff on youtube in my target language as well, for example, I'd look up beginner tutorials on software and games I'm already familiar with. At least those are some of the things that I've found fun!

For me telling people that I started learning Japanese was and still is a very important step into actually keeping with it but its highly depended on who you tell it. I told my friend who previously started a Japanese Uni Course and quit due to him not seeing it worth professionaly and some friends I made over HelloTalk. It was super important for me as for one, the Friend who tried studying it, could already give me tips on what to do better and I trust him with his judgement so I could focus more on actually learning the language and not try to find the "perfect" way. On the otherside, the social pressure and embaressement is currently what is pushing me through my low motivation phases. Nothing is more cringe and completely embarassing then telling someone you are learning the language to understand them better and talk with them and then not actually doing it. Like that just gives me shivers even thinking about it. One thing for me is definitely since I have ADHD I need deadlines, so one of those ways is this. The other stuff was setting realistic expectations though. I asked them if they can help me and ask me every week what I learned that week. Its not important what it is or how big it is but It needs to be something new. Just so I have even the excuse to learn for 5 Minutes. Honestly I would recommend that for people who enjoy learning languages more for the social aspect like making friends, understanding culture, etc. who need that final push and grab the social pressure has.

I sorta understand the "Don't tell others" but I can imagine that it may also be a bit helpful; mainly if you have someone who understands the language who's willing to help you with things you're struggling on. Only if they're willing to help. It's always a bit bitter to have someone (who isn't a jerk and gets on your every little mistake like they're a drill sergeant) help you with a language.

7:25 is the exact scenario why it took me until my 30s to try picking up a language. When I expressed interest while in school to learn another language my mom brought up my autism and how long it took me to be able to speak english and I should focus on things that I'm good at (and obviously listened). I spent rest of my life assuming that mastering another language was just not possible for me until I tried Japanese last April on a whim. I don't go out of my way to tell people now lol.

I'm really glad I decided to check this video out as it turned out that I DIDN'T watch this one after all. I will definitely bookmark or save this video to serve as a friendly reminder because I sort of almost did all that you said a person shouldn't do, haha. Also, I totally get what you mean by the 10th tip because I actually ended up quitting teaching myself how to code a while back after realizing my motivations were not the healthiest and it just didn't interest me at the time. I might someday again, but for now, I'm not going to stress over it. However, I am going back to a previous passion of mine which is doing art like drawing as I had depression in the past and grew distant from it. I've been working on my mental health for the past couple of years through diet, workout regime, better living situation, and overall positive mental habits. I probably still have a ways to go, but I am definitely in a much better as I'm actually considering trying out new things unlike before. I definitely still share some of the pitfalls mentioned in the video, but I refuse to give up now. Anyway, I apologize for the long wall of text. I'm thinking I'll start doing streams once my personal life settles down so that way there's a level of accountability for me (this greatly motivates me). I am looking forward to more of your content as it truly does inspire me and others. You're just plain interesting in general. Thanks again!

Another related tip: Don't compare your progress to other people. There is always that one guy who will say something like, "I spent about 20 minutes a day for six months and I'm already N2, it's sooo easy." And you've been studying for two years and you're barely putting a basic conversation together. It doesn't matter. It isn't a race, and all that will do is make you feel stupid and demotivated, asking yourself why you can't 'get it' and why you are so slow. Take a step back, remember why you chose to learn in the first place, and enjoy the journey. ^ And yeah, this is advice I'm also repeating to myself.

I'll tell you what kills my motivation: Gatekeeping and judgement FROM the Japanese language community. I started my learning using Japanese From Zero for grammar (some Tae Kim too) and Anki for vocab, with spoken immersion through a few different venues. It's been incredibly helpful because I love George's teaching style and I feel like I retain almost all of the grammar so far. I'm not in a rush to learn as I'm incredibly busy with college and my job. I only learn about an hour a day right now plus my Anki reviews. But what nearly makes me quit every time is whenever I go to watch certain KZfaqrs' videos to get some extra tips and their comments are flooded with how methods like AJATT are the ONLY ACCEPTABLE means of learning, or that JFZ is essentially garbage water, or my favorite, that if you don't spend 5 hours a day learning you're hopeless. Even with George (JFZ) and Matt (MvJ)'s recent debate about pitch accent, the stream chats were flooded with toxicity. All it does is kills my interest in learning if I'm sharing the same learning space with elitist snobs like them. Honestly, if it wasn't for my Japanese friend providing so much motivation I would've burnt my books already. She's my ultimate blessing in this journey for sure.

Your worst enemy when learning a language is other people. "Oh, so you're learning French?" *_"Name every word in the entire dictionary"_* I swear to fucking god if some madlad actually puts every single word in the French dictionary here.

Boi oh boi, how long did I wait for such an occasion: Nous ne sommes pas étrangers à l'amour Tu connais les règles, et moi aussi Un total engagement de ce que je pense Tu n'obtiendrais ça d'aucun autre gars Je veux juste te dire comment je me sens Je dois te faire comprendre (Refrain) Je ne t'abandonnerai jamais Je ne te laisserai jamais tomber Je ne m'en irais jamais et te déserter Je ne te ferai jamais pleurer Je ne dirai jamais au revoir Je ne dirai jamais de mensonge et te blesser Nous nous sommes connus depuis si longtemps Ton cœur a souffert, mais tu es trop timide pour le dire A l'intérieur nous savons tous les deux ce qui s'est passé Nous connaissons le jeu et nous allons le jouer Et si tu me demandes comment je me sens Ne me dis que tu es trop aveugle pour le voir (Refrain x2) (T'abandonnerai, t'abandonnerai) Je ne t'abandonnerai, je ne t'abandonnerai (T'abandonnerai) Je ne t'abandonnerai, je ne t'abandonnerai (T'abandonnerai) Nous nous sommes connus depuis si longtemps Ton coeur a souffert, mais tu es trop timide pour le dire A l'intérieur nous savons tous les deux ce qui s'est passé Nous connaissons le jeu et nous allons le jouer Je veux juste te dire comment je me sens Je dois te faire comprendre (Refrain x3)

2:01 as cultish as that sounds, it makes sense when you think about it. You also experience that 1st hand when you to set a personal goal and start to slack off/lose interest. Giving yourself too much freedom will lead to poor decisions long term objectively for your goals. Buuuuut, too little freedom will feel like a prison. The right balance is needed

8:05 sounds like crab mentality. Even if they don't consciously think about dragging others down, sometimes people try to prevent others from succeeding without really thinking about it.

I'm french. So... I learn english with my english class of course ! But also by watching english videos. I want to learn japanese too, but as you can see. I'm not fluent yet... Is that a good idea to learn japanese with the english translation ? So I can learn both english and japanese ?
@Livakivi

Its probably easier when you are fluent in English, but I don't think its impossible, as long as you can just look up English words in a dictionary

I'm not learning Japanese yet; but what I'm about to tell you might help you. I'm currently learning programming, and all the materials related to that topic I'm getting them from English sources. The answer to you question... I'm a native Spanish speaker who also learns English, and having taken the decision of learning programming in my target language (English) has made wonders in the way I understand, and express myself. So give it try, it may work. Good luck!

Tip 8 is exactly why I only told my best and closest friends and family that I'm learning Japanese. You can't explain to a bitter 3rd world country citizen that learning a language other than English, Chinese or German is a good idea. I'm not a strong-minded individual, so I get talked out of a lot of stuff easily. And honestly? I don't think I never WILL tell anyone else about my Japanese learning.
