Very sad the news of the death of Ronnie Hawkins, he was undoubtedly a legend and the one who made it possible for the 5 members of The Band to meet.
Levon first joined on drums, despite the fact that in his previous bands he played guitar. Then Robbie would join on bass, although he already knew that he would later be the guitarist, since Fred Carter Jr. had announced that he would leave the band. Then Rick Danko would join in to play rhythm guitar, he learned to play bass after Rebel Payne left the band. Later Richard Manuel would join in with what he would describe as a "rhythm piano" but what earned him a place as a Hawk was his incredible voice. Hawkins originally had to buy Hudson's time. The only way Hudson would agree to join the band was if he was paid to give everyone music lessons as well as being paid as a regular gigging member of the Hawks. Hudson joined up a little before Christmas 1961.
And with these 6 incredible musicians, the nucleus of what would be Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks would be formed. Certainly, Ronnie Hawkins had a keen eye for finding talented musicians.
In the photo Danko is playing a 6-string bass (like the one The Beatles used for Let It Be)
