Live Burn: Bloomington Fire Department

Bloomington Fire Department burns down a residence slated for demolition as per of a training exercise to demonstrate fire behavior. Watch from the point of ignition to the complete collapse of the residence (apart from the chimney (all brick so it’s very stable).

At around one hour and twenty-three minutes, all that popping I would guess was Asbestos panels around the fireplaces upstairs and down. Unfortunately that was not removed prior to the burning of the house. Older house, somebody didn't do their homework.

Hard to tell, but from the rate of spread I am guessing that the roof was cedar shake. Good example of why that is not a good roofing material. If that had been modern lightweight construction, the time to total involvement would have been much shorter and major collapse would have been about 30 minutes, or less. Even with all the doors and windows removed that old house put up a good fight against the fire.

These controlled burns must feel so strange to FFs who normally are attacking a structure fire with everything they have but here they must let it burn. Stay safe!

best thing to do for derelict houses plus they should use to train with pre set put the call in let the rookies run from fire station etc practice with equipment take turns

what's with the continuous stream of water on the back side of the house? Are they trying to keep the flames away from the trees?

Typically that is a protection line to keep the tree line or other exposure from burning.

They are trying to put out fires not start fires in perfectly good houses

It's bad when firemen start burning down perfectly good buildings. It shows the lack of respect to the community and others.

@user-hr5tg4iy4l The buildings are donated by the property owners who plan to demolished them anyway. These training exercises are very valuable. There's nothing bad or disrespectful about it.

Instead of burning these abandoned homes, why not just fix them up and give them to homeless families who can actually use them. 😮

I think it's wrong when fire department starts burning down buildings, it shows the opening of a bad subject. Who the hell are these people? That's supposed to be putting out fires in the burning down buildings.

This house was donated to the fire department as it was sold and the new owner wanted it gone to build a new property on. The department used the property to train on before completely burning it down as an example of fire behavior. I can assure you the department had all the permission needed to conduct this live burn and they did not burn down an occupied residential property.

You clearly don’t know ANYTHING about how fire departments operate. This was an unoccupied residence that the city was going to get rid of anyway

@@joshmabe8622I think I know a little bit about how fire departments work 25 years in Detroit fire. Starting to rethink controlled burns, to many possible things that can go wrong! Maybe start thinking about maybe do ride alongside with bigger and busier departments in your area. Just a thought.

I think you need to read the description of the video before opening your mouth. All you show is ignorance. Such burns are useful to teach the firefighters how to do their jobs, how a fire behaves, what materials burn at what speed. At the end, what is left is used to train the investigators over the cause of the fire (where it started, what was used). Houses are chosen because they are either due for demolition or a hazard anyway. Instead of having all the material removed, burning is simpler. This is invaluable to the firefighters.
