In spite of being only three points above the drop zone ahead of the final round of fixtures, Cagliari will conclude their Serie A campaign against Fiorentina without the threat of relegation as 16th-placed Frosinone and Udinese in 17th go head-to-head on Sunday. Instead, the Islanders can look upwards in the table and a victory could see them finish as high as 13th which would be their best end of season placing since the 2016/17 season.
It would also further highlight the improvement from Claudio Ranieri’s side from Round 25 onwards (W4, D6, L3), a run in which they have recorded half of their 36 seasonal points. Three of those came on Sunday with a 2-0 away win over Sassuolo, which ended a streak of five games without a victory (D3, L2), and means Cagliari are targeting back-to-back wins in the league for only the third time this season.
Given Fiorentina are unbeaten over the last six H2Hs (W3, D3), including a 3-0 victory in this season’s reverse, achieving such a feat likely won’t be so straightforward for the hosts. However, they have had less joy when facing Cagliari in Sardinia, having not won on any of their four previous visits (D2, L2), keeping only one clean sheet across those games.
But unlike their hosts, La Viola’s season does not end with this match as they still have two more fixtures to play with their UEFA Europa Conference League Final against Olympiacos on May 29th before a Serie A match with Atalanta in early June. The European final will no doubt be a priority, although Vincenzo Italiano’s team can secure eighth place and a return to Europe next season with a win at the Unipol Domus on Thursday.
Players to watch: Cagliari centre-back Yerry Mina has scored in his last two home games and he will be particularly keen to make it three in three against Fiorentina who he left only three months ago. Nicolás González has scored in two of his three appearances against Cagliari including the H2H in October and has tasted defeat in only two games when he has scored for Fiorentina (W26, D4) across his three seasons with the club.
