I take you to FOH so you can see what I see during a live mix. You will see my fader moves, FX assignments and I comment all along the way.
This is a song that audience members probably don't think about much in terms of what goes on behind the scenes but you will see what it takes to make a dynamic mix and keep the mix sounding professional.

So when you're doing quick little rides, like bringing up guitar lead lines, or stabs etc, you're actually having to do the move earlier depending how far back you are, and depending what the latency to you from the stage is huh? Also in a situation like that, could you just have monitors at your station or headphones that are delay compensated? If so, I'm guessing monitors/headphones would be more to do quick checks in solo, or processing stuff in solo VS actually relying on them to mix the show? Thanks for your time, love the channel!

That is exactly correct. The latency is about .88 milliseconds per foot Sound is pretty slow. Typical FOH distance is about 105 feet in arenas and amphitheaters so that’s 92.4 ms just to the downstage edge. Then you need to add processing time for the DSP of the amps for the PA which might be another 10ms. Then add to that the fact that many venues when given a chance will add more seats on the floor (higher $ sales) and push FOH back even further or maybe behind all the seats and you start to get to 135ms in latency. The distance can change day to day, venue to venue. The solo bus is delay compensated. I’ve mixed more shows off of headphones and nearfields than you would guess due to FOH positioning, unfortunately.

Thanks and Great. Was hoping to see a song mixed by you at a show - after seeing your interview vlog with Jeremy on his channel (Recording Studio Loser) and the walk around videos you did there. Would like to see how you and other pros use scenes per-song and what goes into a prep for a set list and the scenes involved.

I should do an episode where I talk about how my console is set up. I did that a little on the JBL video back in the pandemic but things have evolved a little over the last couple of years. There are snapshot considerations for monitor mixing and others for FOH that need to be discussed.

Sick video!! What’re you using that instant replay 360 for?

It’s been reduced to walk-in and outro music. It used to be used to play the interstitial clips on the album shows. It’s vintage mid-90’s and has been with the band since ‘96. I still use it because it spits out AES and the buttons are tactile. I’m ready for when it dies, but until then…

Hello ! Appreciate you putting out these excellent videos. I have a question about how you have setup Smaart running TF during the show.. I also believe I see a target curve ? 1. Your TF seems to have good data looking at the coherence, how are you getting this. 2. Anything you can share on smoothing and averaging for a live TF. Thank you for your time!

Long story long, yes there is a target curve there that I tune the PA to every show. During the show helps me validate what I am hearing at mix position…power alley, issues I hear in the HF, etc. I mix a left/right out of the console and that is what feeds all the zones of the PA. The console is sending 2 AES pairs to my LM44’s which drive the system. If a zone is mono, it is a -6dB/-6dB sun of the L/R in order to keep unity gain. My mix position is typical off center, with the left side of the console being near acoustic center. That is also where the smaart mic is located. The reference signal sent to Smaart a mono sim of the L/R. The slower the TF average, the worse your coherence will be. In Smart 8 my average was about 16 (trying to remember) and is 4 average depth in Smaart 9. I just looked back at the POV 1 video. You might be seeing the empty room trace I take after tuning which is just a mono pink noise analysis of the mix position. Then I can see how much the system migrates once people are in and environmental factors change. The TF traces you see are all three (target, empty, and live).
