Live demonstration of the Paul Bunyan Wood Chopper at the Modern Homesteading Conference on July 1, 2023 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
UPDATE July 19, 2023: A lot of life has been happening lately so I was delayed in finishing up the plans.
But I’m getting close! 🤗
Due to the number of people contacting me asking how to buy the plans, I just finished making an email sign-up page so you can be first in line to purchase DIY Plans for the Paul Bunyan Wood Chopper as soon as I complete them.
I’m doing my best to get the plans done by August 15th, “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.” 😉

Fun demonstration and explanations. I can attest it is EASY to use and work through a pile of wood! (We visited them last year :-)

I had several large trees taken down on my property in Ohio. How does the chopper work on larger diameter logs, say 24" - 30" in diameter? If I get them up to the table will it split them?

It is easy because the spring lifts the wedge. Are these commercially available or are they only locally crafted? Good job. The Russian Woodpecker has been used extensively in some parts of the world.

Yes that’s right! I am working on partnering with a shop to hopefully build and ship them in the US. For right now I sell DIY plans at PaulBunyanWoodChopper.com so anyone with welding equipment and skills can build one of these pretty easily. Or you can buy the plans and hire a friend or neighbor who has the equipment/skills to build one for you.

@@TomWylie Are you offering that name for everyone to use on this type of splitter? The beam was angled up on your chopper so the wedge can come straight down. The wedge and the hinge should be level. Looks like you have that figured out. To keep the cost down, and shipping, the buyer could supply their own wood post and their own wood beam. The beam could be a peeled log. You could supply the wedge part and the hinge part. The spring could be optional. By dividing the machine you can maybe keep the size and weight limit for UPS. You could custom build a bracket to fit the customers post size. A durable hinge with a large amount of bearing surface would be one pipe inside of another pipe and at least one foot long, with a grease fitting. Some pipes have thicker walls than other pipes with the same inside diameter. Your spring adjuster appears to be excellent. It might be good if there were a chain through the spring. I'm not sure what happens when a spring breaks. I will send an email to you. The length of the beam affects the frequency of the strikes. The beam could be from 8 to 16 feet long. The beam could be covered over. Your trailer idea would be good for some applications. The trailer could have a device that swings down to give a more solid connection to the ground. A wood handle would be more comfortable than steel. A steel handle covered with soft pipe insulation would be possibly the best because it would reduce any shocks to the hands. It looks like you had a box on the head for extra weight from rocks or broken bricks. It would be nice to have it convertible from a splitting head to a hammerhead (for pounding a wedge). Convertability might be difficult and might be not practical. If the wedge could be removed then it could be repaired or replaced. There is probably a way to do it. The bolts should be vertical to hold it tightly against the main part of the head. Various different types of striking tips could be made to fit the same head. The smaller the striking tips are, the less expensive it would be to build them. Splitting tips could be built from steel from junk farm equipment.

I'm also in Missouri (Northwestern). I have a log of locust and hackberry to split. How does something like this work on those? Love these beam and spring splitters.

"beam and spring" splitter. That might be a good name.

How would this do on harder woods like oak?

It does well. I split red and white oak with it all the time down here in Missouri now. If you’re splitting something super knotty and twisted, or something crazy like Osage orange, or a huge rounds that you can’t just lift off the ground relatively easily, then it’s best to save those for a heavy duty hydraulic splitter. But anything I would attempt to split with an axe or maul, I will split with this instead, and it makes it *way* easier.

Классная идея - никаких моторов, но с места не сдвинешь. Вот, тоже, идея хорошая, этот можно перекатывать с места на место, но по сложнее делать: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7B3fJaB28_DYoE.html

Thanks. This one actually can be moved very easily, either by hand or hitched to a vehicle like a trailer. In this video I was halfway through remodeling the design to include the large wheels you see in the background. You can see the new design and plans for it here: PaulBunyanWoodChopper.com I’m sorry but the design in the video you linked to doesn’t make sense to me because the heavy splitting head is hanging loose on the cable and it would very easily injure the operator. Thanks for commenting!
