High up in the mountains above Cap Haitien, there is a school. Inside that school, 180 young lives (2017 update: 300) are being transformed through learning, laughter and belonging. Through their journey, a community is beginning to see a different future. Education changes lives and creates a future filled with hope and possibility. This is what compassion in action looks like and this is how we make a difference, together.

Mellissa Harris... Do not continue to promote strife between two black nations. Thank God for what these people are doing, and stop the negativity. The Bahamas was devastated, and they need help too right now. To continue with this mess does not do any good but promote hate. Black people as a general race of people are their own worse enemy. There is good, and bad in every country, and you do not know every person in the Bahamas. God bless people everywhere, for He created all, and if you are a child of God, then you should have love in your heart for all people. “Be ye holy, for I am holy says the Lord”. God is a God of love, holiness, and righteousness. May the love of God be shed abroad in your heart, by His Holy Spirit.

Live Different I understand you are trying to help. I'm not disputing that at all, and I'm sure the recipients are very grateful. I'm not trying to discourage your efforts - in fact I applaud them. However, my only point is that most times, organizations tend to show the worst of the worst and make such disparaging comments about our country, people and culture. That's all. Code language is strong. Women and children carrying water on their heads was a cultural, bonding thing to do. Being at the river - washing, bathing, swimming, chatting, gossiping, etc... was FUN... and then everyone filled up their buckets for the trek back to their houses. I have seen where foreigners come to the Caribbean and bypass all the HUGE 3 & 4 story beautiful houses and colorful buildings, go the the absolute worst areas, just to take pics of barefoot children in 2-room tiny wooden houses....then post that to their websites. cha!

The main problem with water is storage capacity. It is possible to transform a "laundry size" basket into a container that holds water simply by lining the interior of the bamboo basket with cardboard on all sides (bottom and vertical surfaces). Once the cardboard liner is secured with string, simply lower a white plastic trash back into the basket. You not only have a water container but also can see when it needs to be cleaned thanks to the white plastic bag. Cleaning involves changing the plastic bag. As long as the cardboard liner is dry, it will protect the plastic bag from being punctured by the sharp pieces of bamboo. To keep the cardboard dry, another plastic bag can be placed on the exterior of the basket. Since electricity is also scarce in Haiti maybe your organization can teach the kid how to generate electricity while riding a bicycle. Please watch my KZfaq video entitled "How to install ceiling fan alternators on riding bicycles." Thank you for helping!

Bonjou tout moun- hello everyone- yes, I too want to see videos of Haitian employment- at least as many Haitians being paid for their work so that they in turn can feed their families, --- as they work alongside the international volunteers (it is great to let us foreigners be impacted by the reality of carrying water up and down mountains, all day long, experience mixing cement by hand, carrying block, rocks, etc. etc.) but PLEASE, always be careful and understanding, when it appears that we are taking jobs that Haitians would LOVE TO BE BUSY DOING, :-) == THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR THE CHRIST KINGDOM WORK YOU ARE DOING-- Keep Building Those RELATIONSHIPS : OH, THAT GOD MIGHT SHOW US ALL HOW TO EMPLOY MORE AND MORE HAITIANS, and enable and empower Haitians to be the employers also = I am one of the privileged volunteers, who gets to live permanently among my Haitian brothers and sisters.
