I have turned a bowl like this one, only smaller and without the foot. It was my 5th bowl ever, and out of unknown yard branch from the back yard. An interesting and challenging project. Thanks for the video. You are always informative and well worth the watching.

New to me, adjusting the live center after the outside has been turned enough to see if the low sides match. Eager to try another live- or natural-edge bowl with that adjustment.

Magnolia can be hit or miss. Very lovely to turn and it can spalt very nicely too. Or it can be plain looking and yellowish/white.

Turned out real nice. Let us know the outcome in two weeks. Well....that wasn't the end. I now see how it turned out. Did not crack as I expected. Bark remained on board. Well done. Looks great! Thanks for sharing

One of the nicest bowls I ever turned was a live edge walnut bowl. The chunky bark added a ton of character to the finished peice.

Interesting seeing the rhythmic on/off of the shavings coming off the gouge due to the shutter beating with the rotation! And a lovely end result.
@GoogleAreDumb

Might be interesting if you could play around and synchronise the rotation to the framerate of the camera so it looked like the bowl was barely moving but we could see the material coming off. Like watching the bowl magically form in real time!

Nice looking bowl. Who would have thought a magnolia tree would produce such interesting grain. We have a few of those trees - one of them is at least 75-100 years old. I may have to try turning some magnolia sometime. We also have pecan trees, and they drop limbs fairly regularly. Your use of local wood is very inspiring ... especially since we have much of the same trees as you, being only about 30 miles from you.

Kent I am turning a Magnolia bowl now. Very wet. It sprayed my chip drop cloth with a lot of water as I was turning. Some of the bark came off but it did hold on to the wings. Drying now so on to another bowl. Love your videos. They are making me a better turner.

That magnolia is a beautiful bit of wood and it's wonderful what you've done with it. I've been turning live edge and natural edge bowls from a spalted silverbirch that's been lying around here and your videos have been very, very helpful. So thank you, thank you, thank you and keep them coming :)

Can I suggest that you mount the camera to a tripod, rather than the lathe bed. The steadier picture would allow us to see what you're doing a lot better. There are boom attachments that would allow you to get into the tight spots as well. Thanks for the videos.

Real nice Kent, Yes I have turned several live edge bowls out of maple, red oak, apple and river birch. I use your method of removing the center and have found it easier to control the wall thickness. My wife has confiscated my apple and maple. Thank you for your classes they are so helpful. Best to you and your family. Happily turning Kevin

Well done, Kent, Magnolia is really a very nice wood. As a gardener i was so lucky to keep the wood for me after felling an old magnolia tree. The grain is calm and not very dramatic and the bark is surprisingly stable. I didn't manage to strip it off and even after drying it stays in playce without any voids . Even drying in a microwave oven is possible without any problems. And finally the old lady that got me the tree was exited of the first bowl that i offered her..

Hey Kent, Lovely live edge bowl. It came out beautifully. I have made a few of these (about 5 or 6 I think) and they are fun to make. I pretty much learned how to do it from watching Phil Anderson. Like you he also gives excellent explanations as he goes along. I did pick up one tip the point of balancing the wings if I start out with a drive spur. Most of mine one side is a bit higher than the other but that does not hurt the beauty of the bowl a bit. Good video. Awesome bowl. Yall have a wonderful day.

Thank you Kent for yet another project that was both enjoyable to watch as well as being so informative as are all of your videos. Your clarity of explanation is second to none and much appreciated. I must keep my eyes open in the future for some 'spare' magnolia, we have some here in Britain most of which are much-loved specimens but there is always hope.

Very nice uniformity and flow. I recently turned a Red Elm live edge. Turned it thin but after 4 days drying inside the house two symmetrical cracks formed at the top of both wings through the sap wood. I put CA glue on to try to stop them from extending further and so far so good. Thought to add colored quick set epoxy to fill 1/8” crack roughly 1” long. Won’t know color to mix in until I sand the bowl and put some sealer on it to get a good idea of a matching or contrasting “feature”.

Thank you for sharing these. I would love learn more about the use of that scraper which seems to be cut like a skew chisel. What are the advantages of this cut as opposed to the classic scraper profile?

I’ve turned a dozen or more live edge and natural edge bowls, Kent, and I learned a lot from this video. Great tips for setting up, reassurance that some of what I thought was my lack of skill was really just unavoidable stuff, and a reminder that the bottom will warp and I should check with friends who’ve gotten green turned bowls from me 😊

Great video as always. Question...would you recommend putting a coat or two of the Tried and True Varnish Oil over top of their Danish oil for added protection or is that overkill?

Jim, Good question. The common wisdom is fall/winter while the tree is not moving as much fluids through the cambium layer. Although I had a hickory tree that came down in summer from a storm and its bark thought it was wood and the two were inseparable. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Richard, good question. With thin walls like this, the piece will dry in a few days indoors at room temperature. No need to rush it. Happy Turning!

Beautifully done, but the fungus on the green bowl managed to spoil it in 7 days, which is a pity! It would be better to put it in the microwave right away! I've had this happen before!
