Didn’t even now Mesquite was a species of wood. I’ve seen a lot of live edge pieces like this on KZfaq but I really appreciate the small tips along the way. I’m so new in the turning world and love all the little shared areas of experience. Keep up the great work. God bless

Your video reminded me of a Mesquite story. Four or five years ago I was in Maui when a friend was settling his fathers estate. He had a aerial photo from when his father had built his house in 1992. It was in the middle of a five acre field that had grown some crop. There was no vegetation at all. That was then. Now there were palm trees, banana trees, and all kinds of plants growing. It looked like a jungle. There was a fence around the property and as we walked around, he pointed out a mesquite tree that was about a foot across and it was right inn the fence line. He told me that when his dad built the fence, he used whatever he could find for fence posts and used a piece of mesquite. It took root and grew. I had never heard of that. I relayed the story to my dad, who had grown up in Texas, and he said he had seen that happen before. So be careful about getting that bowl too close to water. :-D

Nice bowl, Kim!! I have tons on mesquite and desert salt cedar (Tamarix) on property I own in southern New Mexico. Both woods when dry, can be pretty tough to work with and hard on tools. But they do have beautiful color, and ring patterns. Play it safe while turning mesquite. It can be temperamental since it tends to be brittle when dry. Heck, if my land was near you, I would give you an endless supply of both mesquite and salt cedar since they both grow like weeds; particularly in and near the irrigation ditches for pecan orchards and other crop lands.
@KimTippin
@KimTippin 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Even though this was considered green, some spots were dryer than others and was "chippy". reminds me of how cedar is when dry. Likes to split is sharp jagged shards. I wouldn't mind turning a forest of green Mesquite :)

In Arizona I see mesquite trees on landscaping trucks all the time during monsoon season. Because it’s hard it snaps at the crotch in the wind. The thorns are horrible on the thinner limbs. Last year I must have run over a pieces and the thorn punctured my tire.

Kim i just found your channel! #1 beautiful bowl #2 i really like the fact you tirn mostly with gouges, and cut with authority. #3 if you like mesquite, i would recommend you trying bois d'arc also. It cuts like butter also when green, and its a beautiful yellow, finishs super smooth, it is my favorite, but i will definitely try mesquite. Keep up the awesome work!
