You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens. We all have techniques we depend on to lift our spirits when we’re feeling down about ourselves or our lives. Getting help from others is only one part of the equation. We also need to be able to validate, support, and help ourselves. Odds are, you aren’t always looking for someone’s advice or opinion when you come to them with a painful story. You’re looking for them to confirm you didn’t do anything wrong-or if you did, that you’re not a bad person for it. When you’re looking for that warm, fuzzy feeling that emerges when someone you trust tells you, “Everything is going to be okay,” imagine yourself saying it to your younger self. Essentially, you’re looking for someone else to see the best in you and believe in you. Give yourself what you’re seeking from them before making that call. Then by all means, make it if you want to. The goal isn’t to stop reaching out to others. It’s to be there for yourself. The words you want to hear from someone else will be far more powerful if you fully believe what they’re saying.
Chetan Bhagat is a celebrated Best-selling author, a columnist, motivational speaker as well as a KZfaqr, just to name a few. With the talk titled, ‘Live for Yourself’, he pressed the need to love yourself before loving others as none of those very people are gonna pay your bills, thus eradicating the need to impress others. Relating with his personal experiences, he has shown how switching a high-paying, lucrative job following one’s passion is still considered a taboo in India, that too in the (advanced) 21st century. He has effectively ditched the term ‘Selfish’ for ‘Self-care’. Mr. Chetan’s talk has every spice in the right amount as he hasn’t shied away from sharing his life’s journey including severe weight fluctuations in the COVID times, societal taunts directed for his unconventional life-path - altogether punched with a distinctive sense of humour!
Author, Writer & Entrepreneur This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I agree. We always include others in our decisions and thinking and we feel guilty if we do not. So what Chetan is saying makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

So so true...The time I was married before we ended the alliance of matrimony with each other and decided to retain the alliance as a family, I was living for everyone else and dying inside, not just emotionally and mentally but physically as well...and though I was in the best shape of my life from outside, just like how the speaker , Mr Bhagat's life looked from the outside, it looked amazing from outside because I was physically running from my insides. I was taking pain killers injectables and orals, even running towards people who were unhealthy for me, trying to escape me, my reality. Finally when I decided to breath for myself, to preserve myself and my sanity, ofcourse I faced both external and internal resistance...and I tried a few escape mechanisms again...but realised whatever we resist will and does persist...till I decided to not resist it, listen to myself, I was able to breathe, to connect better with myself and ppl I call my inner circle. Thank you for this amazing talk.

Good message, especially for Indians who get recruited into roles that we are not old enough to comprehend but feel entrapped for life, because our parents, preachers and pundits decree the purpose of your life. You hardly have a say in how you want to spend life or if you have an alternative dream for your life. So you are right, that the majority cog Indians are raised to live for others. It takes an immense will power and courage to follow your heart. But you are right, in asserting and claiming at least some part of your life for yourself. In the old Indian tradition, men walked away from it all in Vanprasthan age ( post working life) women retired and focus on spiritual growth once the kids got married and brought others to takeover the responsibility. Not so now. Elderly parents now have to devote their so called Golden years in raising their grandchildren in service of the dual income family where husband and wife work! So unless one musters courage to say ‘no’ you could be spending your whole life to please others! Good speech!

Sir.. what you said is quite right..bcos most people care about what others say about them nd not caring their own ambitions or aspirations.,.means even their small wishes or dreams. Such people are not living actually they are simply sacrificing this one time life in this earth. We have to live for ourself as no one can satisfy our own needs nd deeds. It was a nice nd thought provoking speech. Congrats 👍

Hey there! As someone who values happiness and inner fulfilment, I completely agree with the message you've shared. It's easy to get caught up in seeking validation from others or chasing external markers of success, but ultimately, it's important to stay true to ourselves and prioritize our own unique identities and happiness. Living for ourselves is key to leading a happy and empowered life, as Chetan ji wisely said. So let's all strive to find contentment in the present moment and embrace our true selves.

Superb, superb, superb👌👌👌👏👏👏👏absolutely veritable!!!👍 Happiness, inner fulfilment & contentment is what matters the most, irrespective! This is best understood by people who are creative, genuinely talented, artistic & believe in themselves. And people pleasers who seek approval & validation from others or chase money lose their own unique identity & happiness & deplete their soul power eventually. Hence 'Live for yourself' is the key to leading a happy & empowered life as aptly quoted by Chetan ji. Kudos & hat's off to him for leading by example.

Nope actually... Living for yourself means living unapologetically. We generally wired to feel happy only when our loved ones are proud of us but it's not a good way of living. It might be good if it happens but if not happens, you should still happy enough to lead your life
