Weirdly, the car launching into the air after hitting the toll booth is something that's actually happened. I saw footage of it while working in TV news about a decade ago, and thought, "Well, I guess Die Hard WASN'T stretching the truth there."

I love the chemistry and banter between Bruce Willis and Justin Long:) He does become more superhuman in this, where in the first he was more real, human, and mortal. But I love it all, including Kevin Smith:)

That was my thing, I really liked this movie, especially because Im a big Justin Long fan, so that was a great casting job to bring his needed levity to the back and forth between him and Bruce, but once a much older John McClane is hanging with ONE ARM off an F-35, that's when things get a bit satire-ish at that point. I think had the fighter jet gotten destroyed by their own overzealousness without John doing the crazy stunts to evade it, that would've been a lot more realistic (even with John jumping out of a vehicle going at least 100 in a tunnel, even THAT I can sort of live with). The first three Die Hards have some super-human aspects as well, but most are still in the realm of possibility for the most part (the famous elevator shaft slip was a stunt gone wrong, so there you go)

Damn. So awesome. To be honest, this is one of those very very rare action movies in which every action set piece is fantastic. The action in this movie gave me Cameron's True Lies vibe.

Congratulations on a job well done. Yes there were some "outlandish" set pieces, but people seem to forget that there was also a ton of good old-fashioned stunt work. It's funny, but for all the crazy stuff that went on, my favorite stunt was when McClane rolls that guy down the stairs in an office chair at a full sprint.

I saw this movie in theaters by myself on a weekday. They should’ve released the unrated version in theaters IMO. Also McClane somehow fires a dozen-plus shots from an 8-shot pistol but heck it, it’s a lot of fun

Why would they give McClane an 8-shot SIG? NYPD don't use that. And yeah...they don't use the Beretta 92F either, but that became some what of a "hero gun" for actions stars in the 80s and 90s.

The "hamster guy" was played by Cyril Raffaelli, a French actor with excellent martial art skills. Check out District B-13, as it's a great action flick.

This is how I became aware of Parcour ... I usually don't spontaneously walk into movie theaters to check out movies but this time it was a happy accident... One hot and lazy summer day in 2004 i'm walking around in lower Manhattan, NYC with nothing to do and pass by this movie theater - the "Angelika Film Center" So, I climbed up their metal black steps and checked out all the movie posters around their ticket both - and the Ghetto/Graffiti looking one of "District B13" caught my eye. So, I thought "what the hell" and went in .. then I thought "OOHHH Shit, this is f@cking awesome!!!" This originally "in theater release" was in French (with English subtitles). About a year later, they came out with the version that had English language overlay on the soundtrack. @@Mantikal ... David Belle was a parkor consultant on The Prince Of Persia movie, but you wouldn't know it. The hype of using Belle made me excited to see the film...but what a let down. Poorly constructed action sequences, bad camera angles, stupid editing made the whole visual aspect a mess.

Regarding the next movie, "A Good Day To Die Hard" (Die Hard 5), when Jeremy Jahns was doing a retrospective review of "Unbreakable," he said "Of course, we all know that Bruce Willis actually IS invincible in real life. I mean, he made THIS movie (shows a poster for "A Good Day To Die Hard"), and he STILL gets work. He IS unbreakable."

As a someone who grew up watching the Die Hard films with my dad, I would put this and Die Hard with a Vengeance close together for my second film in the series. The scene when they are in the car and have "it makes you that guy speech" is my favorite bit in the film. I love that John is a aging "hero" from a analog era in a digital era that he knows nothing about. It does that having a sidekick that is the complete opposite of you very well imo.

If you're open to watching a French-language action film, I recommend giving _District 13_ a shot. It co-stars Cyril Raffaelli (AKA 'Spider-Boy') as one of the two main leads, and incorporates a lot of parkour/free running into the action sequences, which gives the film its own unique style. You can watch it with English-language dubbing, but for me, hearing the actors speaking with their own voices, in their own first language, makes for a more immersive experience.

I would love to see them react to lethal weapon, then maybe a few Chuck Norris and Van Damme movies and then they could conclude the 80s&90s Action Heroes with The Expendables, that would be awesome. And maybe as a bonus, do a Wesley Snipes run with Money Train, White men can't jump, Rising Sun, New Jack City and Blade inbetween. (and give Jet Li some love?^^) But I think it all comes down to: maybe they wont do Mel Gibson movies due to controversial reasons on the channel?

Timothy's greatest achievement is Justified. He got nearly every actor from Deadwood a part in this and the best ensemble of character actors you've ever seen. And you won't believe how fast he can pull a gun. With the dry humour it's perfect.

A lot of people bag this movie for not being like the other three, but I actually really enjoy it. I like that it’s different, I like that Justin Long brought out the funnier side of McClane and Kevin Smith is always great. I thought the entire cast did a great job. (I also really enjoy the fifth movie which a lot of people really hate, but I just think it’s a lot of fun like this one) You should definitely do The Fifth Element if you haven’t seen it, and Red and Red 2 are great. Bruce is also very good in Looper.

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks There are always some forgotten gems, another great one that is sadly overlooked, is Gross Pointe Blank, which also has an incredible cast, amazing script and killer soundtrack! And for the lovers of the newer more grounded Bond and Bourne etcetera films, I can't believe the lack of love for Robert DeNiro's, Ronin!

This movie can't compare to the previous ones, especially the 1st. Yet, it's so enjoyable, I had tons of fun while watching it in the theater. To some extent it's a self parody/homage, and it definitely felt like a massive gift to the fans.

A lot of fun for sure. Regardless of the lack of realism, there was enough of a good back and forth there between Bruce and Justin to sustain the film in the non action moments, and the main premise is a pretty scary and realistic one for sure. Very symbolic too

I really enjoy DH4. Probably my third favorite behind 3 and 1. I think the key to a good Die Hard is giving John someone to banter with, and a good villain for him to match wits against. And he needs to take a brutal beating over the course of the movie and complain humorously about it.

@Hey, I hope you're doing okay. Goes 1, 3, and 4 for me. I really like the hacking aspect for sure, and it is a very realistic premise as an idea, no question. The 5th one could've been salvaged by going back closer to its roots instead of trying to upstage this one with an older John McClane. I like 2 more than 5, but neither are nearly as good as the other 3. Still a great series though, no matter how you slice it.

Director Len Wiseman also directed the first two Underworld films, the Total Recall remake and I, Frankenstein. Justin Long also shines in Dodgeball and Jeepers Creepers. Bruce Willis is also great in Tears of the Sun, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, Red, Red 2 and Sin City. Maggie Q is also in Balls of Fury and Priest

the annoying thing about the Unrated cut is that a lot of McClane's one-liners were either altered or omitted entirely. For example @13:43 Unrated version: Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car! McClane: (something about car crash statistics) PG-13 version: Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car! McClane: I was outta bullets. There are several more that were changed, but that one is like nails on a chalkboard to me the most haha

I think Tim Olyphant is sadly under-rated as an actor. Always loved him since watching him as Seth Bullock in Deadwood. It's probably a difficult series to react to but would love it if you guys ever got round to it.

In spite of what you've been told Die Hard 5 is a worthy finish of the franchise. In that film we get to see John work with his grown up son and Lucy makes another appearance. The finale is anti climatic but 2 thirds is the normal wild ride. Plus you should check out Tears of the Sun for an action movie with non ending thrills that's also Bruce Willis's most poignant tear jerker.

The last Die Hard movie they did was pretty good (A Good Day to Die Hard). How this one had his daughter in it the next one has his son in it. They were supposed to make one more with Bruce Willis that was supposed to be a prequel to the Die Hard series but Bruce’s retirement from acting due to his his diagnosis of aphasia. I love the callback to the two Agent Johnson’s from the first one that were useless.

If you do decide to check out A Good Day to Die Hard, watch the theatrical version. The only difference I can remember between the 2 is that the unrated version cut Mary Elizabeth Winstead from the movie, for whatever reason.

This movie is kind of underrated. I remember on "film geek" sites people didn't like this. But in retrospect, it does a lot of things well. (The entire fight scene with Maggie Q is pretty creative.) I think maybe my biggest critique is that the aesthetic doesn't quite feel like Die Hard, with the color grading being a little more slick and stylized. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just a bit out-of-step with the rest of the franchise. ... I also wonder if maybe they could've had John McClane be more naturally integrated into the central conflict. Perhaps they could've made his relationship with the Justin Long character more personal by having Long be the acquainted with McClane's daughter, instead of that random other person we never see again.

Havent seen the vid yet but i think this is underrated tbh. As a die hard film its kinda meh but as a action film i enjoy it. Expecially the 18 rated cut.

Agree - this movie starts pushing McClane into "Superman" mode (which the 5th movie went all-in on), but on its own merits is still a lot of fun with a great villain. I've tried watching the 5th one a couple of times and it just does nothing for me - it has some great spectacle and some very creative cinematography, but the story is just completely flat.

It certainly looks like an attempt to keep John McClane relevant in a post-True Lies world. Including a harrier sequence was almost too on-the-nose. A little too "Try Hard" if you will....

Thanks for the great reaction. Die Hard 1 and this one are my favorite Die Hard's. Try some or all of these BW movies, great entertainment: 16 blocks, Looper, Hostage, Red, Red 2, and Mercury Rising.

An interesting observation (well, it was interesting to me, at least...) ; With every movie, the venue of the movie gets larger (From building, to airport, to city, to entire country... It goes international in #5...) Had they made a #6, I have no doubt it would have somehow gone interplanetary...

Timothy Olyphant who plays the main villain in Die Hard 4 was in Scream 2 in 1997 and Hitman in 2007 and more recently in tv show Justified.

Maybe I'm just old school, but as enjoyable as the 3rd installment was, I still go back and rewatch the original most often. That simple formula of John alone against a gang of terrorists (barefoot no less) in Nakatomi Plaza won't ever be replicated. Don't get me wrong, Die Hard with a Vengeance is an awesome film in its own right, and definitely my second favorite, but the first one with John vs Hans is an easy watch for me :)

yeah the first die hard had the action thriller vibe where he is hiding around. die hard 2 was a race against time...die hard 3 is like riddle game...tbh they each had their own vibe

It's tough to pinpoint just how this movie works so well It is so over the top ridiculous (on so many occasions), but the comedy balances everything out so well. It's not my favorite of the franchise (not even close), but it's a fitting way to end the franchise (I never saw the last one).

Sounds like people have told you not to bother with DH5, but honestly it's not that bad. I still think it's the good, fun, violence we know and love from Die Hard. Even if you don't watch it on the channel, it's still worth watching. :)

One of the best action movies ever made! Action like this, well done, more down to earth is more enjoyable to me than those over the top CGI laden scenes we see in sci-fi or comic book based features, they did a phenomal job on this one, great reaction!

Never understood why this got so much hate, back in the day you couldn't make this premise up, it's too good! People say this isn't Die Hard... it is EXACTLY Die Hard... hard-boiled old school cop in over their heads, fumbling to just barely de-escalate the situation. I loved that you two viewed it, that was a(nother) fun viewing with you two, so THANK you for that :) And to repeat another commenter, Whole Nine Yards would make another fun Bruce outing.

Think this one gets a bit of flack but i find it more rewatchable than the second. Also feels like one of the last movies to go hard with practical squibs and bullet impacts during action which i appreciate big time. the McClane-erisms are also pretty fun in this one : D

Everyone does the first Die Hard, some do the second, but y'all are the only channel on which I've noticed the third and fourth. Awesome job! 👍 My third favourite Die Hard movie overall, but probably my favourite cast of any of them.

The thing I don't like about this one the most is that they turned him into a superhero. In first 3 movies there was illusion of danger. But here he is almost bored and knows he will get the bad guy by the end.

I may be wrong but i thought that the acrobatic character was also seen. in Star Wars Phantom Menace as Darth Mall,but Bruce's comment" Is the circus in town" was a reference to Ray Parks appearance in X-Men as The Road Loved your review

The french "hamster/terminator" is stuntman extraordinaire Cyril Raffaeli. I forgot he was in this. Most of the stunts he did in this were probably real.

This was the first thing I ever saw Timothy Olyphant in, so for me this cemented the kind of character he plays in my mind. Justified and Santa Clarita Diet are on my list of to-watch things, though.

as a film LFDH doesn't work, but as an over the top action movie it's awesome fun. i highly recommend Bruce's Hudson Hawk its one of my guilty pleasure movies because it's just so much fun with the over the top characters, i once saw it described by a critic as a 90 minute tribute to Bruce Willis' ego which is a perfect description for it.
