When I was 18, we did 500 miles around Scotland, starting with a stop just up from gretna, then next stop Loch Ness & little place called Drumen Jocket (don't know if I spelt that right) we then stayed right at the top in Thurso for 3 days before making our way back down the east side & stayed 1 night in Aviemore before heading to Edinburgh & back home. I do have an uncle & cousin who lives in Fort William (well, my cousin does). My uncle actually lives in a little place called Banvea, which is on the opposite side of the Caledonian canal to Fort William & you can see Ben Nevis opposite the Highlands of Scotland are absolutely beautiful 😍

Believe it or not Fort Augustus was at the end of a railway branch, many moons ago - the other end was at Spean Bridge, first stop out of Fort William. It opened in 1903, alas the last passenger train was just 30 years later, in 1933, with the last freight in 1946. Even shorter lived was the short extension to the pier, where a second station existed, to connect with steamer services up Loch Ness. The couldn't have been a financial success, as it closed just over 3 years later, in September 1906! There used to be a monastery behind those trees, too...
