An important conversation

Through this very difficult time for Israe,l and for Jews at large, Einat has become one of my favorite and most respected people. Of course, it's partly because the subject matter is so dear to me, but I love the way her mind works. I am so impressed by how she contextualizes issues in multiple ways, poignantly weaves those ways together and makes conclusions that, to my mind at least, always make clear, blunt sense. She is a truth teller. And I'm grateful for whose team she plays. While it would be amazing to see her as PM one day (!), as an American (I know this can't happen 😢) I'd love to see her as POTUS. She feels like family.

Einat's views have continued to evolve. Very insightful. Much wisdom. Please share widely. "Even Ben Gvir would compromise in the end for peace." For now, given Palestinian intransigence, why shouldn't Israelis assert claims in the disputed areas of, especially, Area C and areas needed for secure borders with Jordan? And that includes settlements. Judea & Samaria should not be Judenfrei. And neither precludes a Palestinian entity someday.

The clarity, the vital details, this needs to be shown in every lecture hall.

I and many others noticed that when Arafat rejected the offer of a Palestinian state there were no protests from Palestinians. The dissapointment was completely expressed by the United States, Israel and a few Arab leaders.The Palestinian people supported Arafat's rejection and opted for terror.

There have never been and never will be 'simple solutions'. In the words of Thomas Sowell, 'There are only trade-offs'. One of the major failures of Western democracies is that they haven't educated their citizens on the enduring significance of this perspective on life.

Before my first visit to Israel, shortly after the Yom Kippur war, like many Irish I had a different opinion of Israel & the Palestinians, much of it incorrectly conflated with Ireland’s history of 800 years of colonisation and subjugation by Britain. I visited many of the Jewish and Christian biblical sites and the Kibbutzim which were attacked by Egypt but my visit to Yad Vashem had the greatest impact and led me to more extensive historical research. In particular the role of Britain in the establishment of the new state of Israel is misunderstood and is cited as the evil coloniser and facilitator of Jewish colonisation of Palestine. It ignores the fundamental right of the Jews to self determination in their historical homeland after several millennia of persecution and expulsion and the duplicitous role of the Brits making competing promises to the Jews & Arabs for the land during WW1 in return for their support against the Ottomans. This very much came to a head early in the mandate with the Arabs believing they had been betrayed. Britain’s solution was to create two new Arab States, Iraq and Transjordan, installing two Hashemite brothers as rulers. The land for Transjordan came from segmenting the area of Palestine to the east of the River Jordan. As we know, this did not placate the Arabs in the remaining part of Palestine and opposition to the Jews turned to violence. Over the next two decades Britain’s position changed due to overriding strategic interests in the wider Middle East and they began to restrict Jewish immigration and in 1937 produced the first partition plan for the territories giving a relatively small area to the Jews, accepted by them but rejected by the Arabs. And, of course everything that has ensued following Israel declaring its independence is heavily biased towards the Palestinians who have successfully played the victim card, being displaced and subjugated by the military might of Israel funded by America which is itself controlled by American Jews and have rejected every attempt at a solution of peaceful coexistence. As you so eloquently articulate, it is not a question of land, it is a question of land without the Jews. There was a massive relocation of peoples throughout Europe post WW2, I think the allies and the UN missed the opportunity regarding the Arabs in Palestine and quite frankly they should have been compulsorily dispersed to Jordan, less those who would accept becoming citizens in a greater (but relatively small) state of Israel. After all most Jordanians are Palestinian. I think Gaza could have been better managed, transitioning to an independent state or as part of Egypt. It may still not be too late!!!

Also, some Palestinians might not like Hamas for their own reasons but their reasons for not supporting Hamas have nothing to do with what happened on October 7. More “everyday” Palestinians committed the atrocities on October 7 than actual uniformed Hamas members

It's important to realize that a people tend to believe the voices that are loudest and most forceful and repeated the most often. Palestinians have been told for over 100 years that Jews stole their Allah-given land and that to allow them to hold onto even a square centimeter of it is haram, or forbidden, and deeply and irrevocably shameful, and living in a society and culture in which honor is everything, that just can't be allowed. So naturally they'd reject even the most generous offer of statehood, if it's on less than 100% of historical Palestine, with millions of Jews on it. Few have bothered to ask whether this is the correct version of the historical record and why it's shameful to give up even the tiniest part of Palestine--and those who have are dealt with harshly. They've been told that it's true and shameful, and that's that, end of discussion. But it's not the correct version, of course, as the historical record proves. Jews did not steal Palestine. Prior to 1948 it was all legally purchased and settled, and much of it actually was barren and barely settled. And even after 1948 the land that Israel captured was legally captured and annexed, per UN rules. Even the occupation of the West Bank--but not the settlements--is fully lawful. And of course there's no shame in compromise if it gives your people peace, security, dignity and the prospect of prosperity. But that's not what they've been told, and, being a very traditional people living in a strictly hierarchical society ruled by the Quran and warlords, they were not about to question the alternate and distorted version of history that they've been sold. The problem isn't land. The problem is mindset. So long as Palestinians' minds are set on getting back every last part of Palestine, violently if necessary, and fully believe that they're entitled to it, there can be no peace. Israel has tried, many times, but they don't care. They want and demand all of it, period. And the global anti-Israel protest movement, which is some bizarre mix of classic antisemitism, Marxism and empty and angry fools looking for meaning in life and something to belong to, and, obviously, orchestrated by outside entities like Russia and Iran for their own purposes, further reinforces this adamantine view, and makes peace and a two state solution impossible. Not until this historically aberrant view is abandoned and Palestinians come to accept compromise will it be possible, or even conceivable. I'd like to believe that it's possible, and I think that it is. But not for quite some time. The story of the Jews wandering in the desert for 40 years to rid them of a slave mindset comes to mind. Palestinians are going to have to undergo a fundamental change in how they view this conflict, before peace is possible, and that's going to take a long time and who knows what to happen in the interim. You can't make peace with someone who thinks that you're the devil who stole their land and brought dishonor to them and their people. And these idiot protesters aren't helping, wrapped up in their narcissistic need to be saviors and engaged in truly magical thinking, as if chanting these idiotic and vile slogans and wearing keffiyehs and insisting that they're not antisemitic is going to make the slightest difference.

Watch 1000 Bullets in October, in which Barak's team is interviewed, disputing many of Wilf's claims first hand. This did not justify the 2nd Intifada, but you are agreeing with Wilf too much. We want to see discourse, not a nod-along.

I am an American Jewish immigrant to Israel. I live in Haifa in a uniquely diverse neighborhood which for me, as a New Yorker, feels like home. I have next door neighbors who are Jews, Filipinos, Russians, Arab Christians and Arab Muslims among others. I see the problem as being this. In 1920 the League of Nations created the British Mandate of Palestine. In 1948 the British left. To whom does this land belong now? Most Jews claim that all or most of it belongs to them. Most Muslims claim that it belongs to them. At the present time approximately 90% of the former Mandate is in Jewish hands and 10% is in Muslim hands (Gaza plus areas A and B on the West Bank). The population is about 2/3 Israeli citizens and 1/3 Palestinians (meaning residents of Gaza plus areas A and B on the West Bank). It should be noted that Israeli citizen Muslims generally begrudgingly support the state of Israel. They know that their standard of living is higher and their human rights are better than they would be under an Islamic government. It seems to me that this situation is not sustainable. Eventually the Israeli Jews must disappear or the Palestinians must disappear. Considering that globally there are about 100 times as many Muslims as there are Jews, it would seem that the odds are in favor of the Muslims in the long term, meaning over the course of the next 25 to 100 years.

I think we're past the point of a viable 2 state solution, but a single state has to look quite different from the Israel we have today, maybe a federation of sorts with a couple Palestinian states as the components. The first real step for peace, is strong Israeli leadership in rebuilding Gaza for the Palestinians after this war. Win hearts and minds and pave the road to coexistence.

If you go back far enough in history, the Arabs and Jews were actually allies. Also, the DNA is similar, and my own Jewish DNA goes back to Spain, Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, and prior to that, it traces back to Iran. I don’t know if I’ll see peace in the Middle East in my lifetime, but I like to think there could be hope for the future. It would necessitate a shift in the Arab mindset-one that could tolerate the existence of the Jewish people.

The Palestinians rejected the offer (described below) because it would have turned the West Bank into a version of what Gaza has since become: A fenced in enclave with the IDF on the border controlling everything and everyone who would enter or leave. Under the deal the "state" would have had less freedom and authority than a US city council and substantially less than South Africa's Bantustans. Peace has not been achieved because Israelis who still believe that Zionism is a viable project are incapable of making a deal that the Palestinians could accept. This is description of the offer is from Shlomo Ben-Ami book, _Prophets Without Honor:_ Barak's offered a "state" without an army, with Israel in control of the borders, the airspace, telecommunications and an undefined period of continued IDF occupation of the Jordan Valley. The IDF would retain the right to deploy on Palestinian territory if security demanded it. The Haram al Sharif and most Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem would remain under Israeli sovereignty with guaranteed Palestinian access, and the Palestinian capital would be fashioned from what was left of Jerusalem and incorporating adjacent villages into the Jerusalem municipality. 1000 refugees would be allowed to return per year on humanitarian grounds, but only with Israeli consent. The rest could return to Gaza and the West Bank and those who did not would be compensated from a fund to be set up mostly by the Gulf states. The Palestinians were not allowed to keep any documents or maps laying out the offer and Israel has never published it. Public accounts have been reconstructed from notes taken by negotiators.

Many excellent points, albeit missing the central issue, which is that Judaism IS NOT just an identity, for as has been seen lately, identities are often fluid. Any discussion of Israel that blatantly ignores Torah Judaism is simply ifniring the whole picture.

This argument that the Palestinians were offered everything they asked for but just walked away because they hated Israel so much makes no sense whatsoever. If that is the case, why not accept the offer and then just keep fighting for more land? It makes no sense. Look into the actual details of the negotiations, and it all falls apart. Arafat didn’t just ‘walk away.’ There was an Israeli election and Netanyahu was elected and did not want to continue negotiations
