Carl…ness.
Recently awarded “MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 20/21” for the QLD Prestige awards - Carl Wockner is a straight-up SAVAGE! (the good kind).
Latest single “Fool’s Gold” is a delicate balance of organic-acoustic POP mixed with singer-songwriter lyricism and honesty, which is exactly what you get when you’re first exposed to Carl Wockner, especially in a live setting.
Determined to pave his own path in modern music - Wockner uses multi-instrumentalism and dynamic production to take listeners on a journey through multiple genres and sonic excitement, all while telling a story.
“Recent singles of 2020 END OF ME, PAINT THE AIR, STEREO, CMB have been a collaboration with pop producer Ben Flanders. We added specific ingredients of Pop production with REAL acoustic guitar, hits, taps - vocal trills and voicing. These were all incorporated INTO the beat to give a nice earthy presence, and we even added Kazoo (on Better) just because.. I really feel like we just straight up need more kazoo in our lives!”
Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. The same album has received a 2016 IMA (Independent Music Awards) Finalist nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album. It was following this recent success that Wockner relocated his family to Nashville TN, USA as a strategic move for his evolving career.
Sept 2019, Carl was featured for an entire episode of “Backstage Marquee” a syndicate show aired across the USA featuring original artists set to be ‘the next big thing.’
Sept 2018 Wockner performed LIVE on National USA Television. The show HLN on the CNN Network for the segment “The Weekend Express,” featured Carl’s original songwriting and performance as a showcase taste of Nashville / Music City.
His rare “Live Looping” style solo performance matched only with his signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own. The live shows have been recognized throughout Australia and USA with multiple headliner performances at festivals and touring, and Wockner is now rumoured as one of the busiest musicians in Nashville, TN - aka “Music City.”
Since landing in Nashville, Wockner has released two EP’s including a Christmas release with the favoured “Santa Selfie.” Currently his latest single “Better” is noted as the best studio representation of his signature live performance style.
There’s something about Carl Wockner’s music that simply exudes peace. The peace you feel when you’re humming along to a nostalgic track, or the peace you feel when you just know everything’s going to be ok. However you connect with Carl’s music, you would agree this he is definitely onto something.
Carl’s first EP, the self-produced, recorded, mixed (all in his lounge room) Acoustic…ness, was released in 2011 to an overwhelmingly positive response. Single “Pictures” received airplay on Hot 91 FM and ZINC FM, the latter of whose DJ’s referred to him as “the man with the big hair and Golden Tonsils.” Carl was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2012 and 2013 MusicOZ awards: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, Blues and Roots, and Pop.

Thanks for this vid mate> Hopefully this has sunk in to help me to expand the capabilities of my setup here at The. Blind Pig (Orange, Australia) - especially re the DI box... Running an RC300, also have the RC505 (not using that a great deal yet, but will when I get the balls to start singing instead of just playing guitar !) and a new 4 ch DI box. Here at my bar I do the audio setup (slowly tweaking it for better and better results) and record (Audio and video) of everyone who plays live here... but for myself (and to provide a better setup for a couple of my favourite regulars) , I am really interested in the fact I can have a "clean" guitar send from the DI box, AND I imagine a clean vocal send, but then they are also routed to the Looper/s ... think I might try setting that up now - don't feel like sleeping. gigs for you at the better venues out this way (no, I don't and wouldn't charge to do that - just want everyone to see your amazing talent.. have told soooo many people to subscribe to your channel). Hi Carl! Thank you so much again for your great content! So helpful! I’m trying to get the best setup and I’m wondering why I shouldn’t route my looper to 3 or 4 outs, when it's so comfortable to be able to adjust each part/track. Could you explain to me why it would be so overwhelming to manage 3 or 4 PA tracks instead of 2? When it comes to routing a whole band, we often have 6 to 8 or 10 outs, so I don’t get it... Thanks!

Very cool video carl. I have a question. You say you use a DI to split the guit signal so foh has a clean first AND A three l/r looper or however you set it. But i noticed you also use a wireless system. So how does that work if you’re sending 2 separate guit signals and don’t want 2 psych cords from the first. Is it simple a splitter post pedal board?

Great stuff mate. Something probably VERY basic for you. I want to loop a chordal rhythm track on guitar and play a solo over it. How do you suggest I boost my soloing volume? When I hit boost on my rig, as it is now, it obviously boosts everything. Is this where the idea of splitting the signal before going to the loop would work? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Keep us posted on when you might be coming back to the states.

Thank you Carl for posting this type of video. Very helpful info! You have also answered some of my questions on social media in the past and I appreciate that as well. Did you ever use the Rhythm section in your 300 for a "click"? Also, do you have your loops' measures set to Auto or a set number? And finally do you set them to auto start when hearing the signal, count-in, or immediate?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, No I don't use a click - all of my loops are set to auto so I have total freedom in each song. I also don't use the auto-start, just the standard "foot switch press" to start recording. I can be much more accurate that way, and often the auto-start poses issues for people when you rely on software to gauge when it thinks you mean to begin. Hope that helps mate

Hi Carl ! Great video, great channel ! I was looking for a loop station, is important that I can use it without external power (to busking). I was thinking in vox lil 1 has very useful effects and is very cheap, the problem is that has only one input and I want conect mic and guitar, do you think that connecting previously at a console both (mic and guitar) and connect both in the same input could sound good ? The other option is boss rc30 (2 inputs) but spend the double. I can afford the RC 30 but doesn't have useful effects included.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ignacio:) thanks for the message! I would definitely get the RC30 over the VOX looper. That way you don’t need a mixer also - and the looper will be much better. Also look into battery options to power all your pedals in 1 battery pack. That would help you with busking

@carlwockner
@carlwockner 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it all depends on where you route your “through” signal. I’m not sure if you can pan that or not. But! You could possibly plug the guitar into R then pan track 1 to the L, then track 2&3 in the sub L & R

@carlwockner

Thanks mate. It’s up to you if you split the signal before the looper. I don’t most of the time, so I usually just have 4 outputs (2x stereo outputs) but when I do split the signal prior then I could run 6 outputs yes. But then that is much more mixing and usually more of a hassle if you don’t have a good FOH mix.

Hey Carl, love this vid ! Super informative. I send my guitar via the aux channel on my desk. My input to my rc 300 is muted so I only have what is looped coming out of the looper . It means I have four seperate channels for what’s being looped. Is there a reason you don’t opt for aux out into the looper ? Love your music and tech vids!
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, that's a great idea using the seperate AUX send to drive the input. essentially it will get the same result as the DI split, (aside from changing the volume if you desire) also with the DI you will just need a patch cable whereas the AUX you would need a seperate cable each send. Still a great option tho!

I’m pretty sure the ditto I used to use would do that…

You can’t route the input to different channels I don’t think. BUT you CAN route each track to be a different output. So if you always beatbox on track 1 you can separate that to main L or R, or Sub out, and the guitar to another.

If I may share the product of my reflection on the matter... Not to diminish the advice you give in this video in any way. I've been working on my live looping setup for a while now, since it uses several different acoustic instruments, and I want the sound engineer of each venue to keep control of the sound of each of the 6 instrument separately to make them sound great in the room's specific acoustics. I decided to go down a quite intricate path maybe, but basically I purchased an audio interface with 8 ins and 10 outs (ok, there are more, but those are the instruments ones). Instead of a looper I use Ableton Live and it's looper effect. Each microphone is routed to it's own track, has its own router (or several depending), and each track, including native signal and loops of that instrument, is routed to one of the outs of the interface, which I then send to the PA. For the venue, it's quite straight forward: each instrument gets its own channel, ad what I do with the signal on it's way to their XLR cable is mine to deal with....
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! Thanks for the comment - yours is an ideal situation for sure. Id even go to the extent (if you haven't already) by adding a rack digital mixer to your rig such as the MR18 or the X32 rack. That way you can accept the 10 outs of your interface and mix the FOH accordingly. So in most scenarios you have adjusted the gain staging / eq / rack etc.. That way you can just patch into FOH from your console, OR worst case, just send a Stereo LR from your Rack Mixer (with or without a Sub bus). My experience with the multiple outputs (which is why Ive kept mine to 5 for most scenarios) is that either the venue hasnt got enough channels, OR (what is most often the case) its a quick festival / venue stage flip changeover and its too much for the sound engineer to comprehend (even though its actually quite simple > set the gain stage and push the fader) they want to be too controlling and my set suffers tone from it. HOWEVER ideally yes your setup would have the best outcome with total control for sure! congrats on dialing it all in. I actually was going to head down that path if it wasn't for this headrush Looper pedal. I like the idea of a standalone option.

Hello my friend. First of all, congratulations on the content. It is very good to have people like you who are willing to help. I have the following problem: I can separate all the RC300 tracks on my mixer by doing the following: 1. I direct track 1 to SUB and turn the PAN to L; 2. I direct track 2 to SUB and turn the PAN to R; 3. I direct track 3 to MAIN and see PAN to L; 4. I turn my guitar on at input R, and it automatically comes out only at MAIN at output R; With that, I get a separate equalization for each pedal output! The problem in question is THE CLICK! This only gives me an option to TOTALLY map to MAIN or TOTALLY to SUB! Is there any way to make it come out separately tmb? Is there an alternative to hearing a separate click? I say that, because it doesn't work to use an EXTERNAL click (from another program, application or pedal) because you can never sync 100% with the loops, it would have to be the CLICK of the RC 300 itself.

Hey mate, this is great! thanks for sharing it:) I love my stereo signal too much to mono my input personally but that makes it very usable. I don't use a click so I'm not much help there. It would be AMAZING if you could also route stuff to the headphone output. Not sure if you can do this with the click but it certainly would be helpful. Ultimately if you really need the click you could record something (along to a seperate click) that could ACT as the click when you overdub everything else in the loop. its a workaround but might be the only option if you need it.

@@carlwockner Unfortunately the click has no PAN options as in the recording channel options :-( I contacted Boss to try a solution, and if they answer me, I will return here to share! Thanks for giving us your knowledge, man ...

@@carlwockner yes I know you have a head rush but the rc600 has 9pedals and 3 pages! So it might save some money on things and comes with 4 input and track effects!

You should make a second channel for that. Don't split your audience. It really messes with the algorithm. You lose a lot of momentum
