Just found this site. Am 68 and a few years back retired from the Army and moved back to Austin. Hooked up with some friends in a band and they started letting me do opening sets and during breaks with original songs. Then one night went to a Song Writers convention and performed two to a room full of strangers alone. Was a hi lite for me. Never quit, never stop, just go and do it.

Hi Keppie! For so many years I have dreamed to become a successful songwriter but I didn't have much idea of what to study. I supposed studying music would be the first step, but by that time music was not seen as a way of having a stable job and make a living. I'm talking about the 70's. My name is Ulises, I'm from Mexico City and I'm 67 years old. At 16 I decided I wanted to be a songwriter, like John Denver, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond and some other singer-songwriters then. Culture was different, finding ways of upbringing a rebel son was not that easy. A couple of years later I followed my mom's advice until I finished my highschool. Then I got into music through singing at church on Sundays and I liked it! I felt the need of expressing my thoughts and my feelings, so I wrote some songs. I didn't know much music and all I did was to try to imitate my favorite singer-songrwriters. Time passed and after studying Electronic Engineering and Graphic Design and getting a divorce, I decided to retake music, so I moved to Cancun and started playing at Lobby Bars, Restaurants and Commercial Plazas (singing covers from those songs I've loved). I still do that though I moved back to Mexico City and now I find your videos online exactly about what I always wanted to do with my life! And the question is: Can I still become a singer-songwriter, at 67? So great I found your channel!

I did your technique were you combine 10 nouns and verbs. That was so fun and quiet interesting lol

Sometimes, I take bits of former songs, that I don't like and put them into a new song that sounds better. I always have a few things in progress that I fool around with for a few days. I used to try and write hit songs (as if that were a realistic goal). Now, I see my songs as mementos of my personal feelings and views.

Really good advice regarding not giving up on a song, there are so many of my songs that have taken me literally months to work on and figure out, but they've turned out to be some of my favorites because I've given them enough time, I've left them and came back to them (and like you said, worked on multiple songs at a time) but eventually that creative moment came through and these have become some of my favorite songs I've written.

I missed the Qand A. I was wandering about Ballads or story songs. Do they have to have a chorus? Maybe a refrain can work?

I'm always working on about 15 songs at a time. Some of them have been ideas for several years and I need to leave them for a few weeks or months then come back to them.

Hi. Derrick here from ATL. Love the content. I heard you guys say in a video that you are always looking for new songs to listen to. If you’re so inclined I’d be happy to get a review. It’s Titled “The Fifth of June” by Derrick Nichols. Thank you.
