Sports games should never be about having balance, they should be about counter-balance. Like it's not 'even' players/teams, it's about the ability to counter one play or one ability with an opposing play or ability or scheme within the game. That's way more important, b/c like you are saying, the game is often intentionally unbalanced within certain teams/schemes/abilities, etc. And yet still the game needs to be made in such a way that in an Ohio State v App St game, with App severely outmanned, if they do all the right stuff with their schemes and use their best players and make all the right reads, they should have a puncher's shot. Whereas in a UM v OSU game, it should be a fairly 'even' matchup with lots of perfectly matched O v D and generally should be a great back-and-forth game, but the opportunity for a blowout still exists. That's all part of the counter-balance that sports games must achieve to be great games.
