ha ha. A lot of hard work goes in mate. You only see the highlights. We have it tough like the rest of you. We don't have access to top venues or private syndicates. We just fish local spots like you lot. cheers

We prefer lures to be honest Don so don't do it much at all. Just something a bit different for a change. Super method if you want to catch predators. I prefer to catch on lures though and not just catch.

Barry Boyd Thanks Barry. Yeah we thought we'd mix it up a bit. I've not been out much with the big lures but hope to crack them out sometime soon. Rig works too so glad Woody showed me it, one to use in the future. Tike is awesome, a real character and loves the action. Though he wound me up last time, kept walking through my line and peeling yards off. lol. He also managed to catch a perch out of the live bait bucket and had it for his dinner. lmao.

Yes mate I heard. I rarely do it to be honest, I much prefer my lures. But conditions on the rivers have been bad every time we have been out so we had to make a switch and chose to do something different.

Lures fishing I do most of the year. Only in the cold months I go fishing with dead bait fish.

Kees de vries If it wasn't for these bait sessions with Ady I normally carry on lure fishing right through the winter, even the coldest days.

Hi Tom, cheers bud glad you enjoyed it. You can experiment and see what works but typically we had it set about 2-3ft off bottom in 7ft of water. Perch often tend to hug the bottom so keeping a bait down there is a good idea. Pike look up so it's not really a problem where you put it. Also in murky water you might want to try a few levels and with clear water it won't matter much at all. tight lines pal

In rivers its good to set it about 1-2 meters deep if you just let it float, but sometimes i put it in a small current and let it go by weeds and then i put it about 50 cm deep, cuz pike hide in weeds

Sometimes canals don't have too many features but the edge is just a perfect feature. Some have a shallow ledge, so you get weed growth where they hang out in. Also you might have a bit of shade so again somewhere to hide. Pike will also cruise along the edge just because it is a long wall, they just make their way slowly along until they find food. If i was bait fishing a canal, I would have two rods and one in the edge and one in the middle. Lure fishing, I cast up along the edge before I wal along and catch plenty of pike.

I don't think the big perch had trouble with that size 4 owner. The big perch we had, the bait must have been well down. The single hook was right in and the treble was also inside the mouth, not just lip hooked like the first perch in the video. Of course you could try smaller hooks. We expected pike so the 4s gave us a good chance with those two. Thanks for the comments matey!

River Piker i just noticed he said your hooking them through the tail? not through the lip?

I think most people hook through the lip so the bait lasts longer, that's the idea I think. We went with the tail so that any perch taking the bait would take it head first and then our hooks were not right down it's throat.

Thanks buddy. Glad we can bring a bit of joy and hopefully a bit of inspiration to get out and find your own monsters. Just remember, pretty much every fish in that video was caught within a few minutes of the bait going in. If the fish are there, they will have it. If it's not happening, keep moving. Good luck.

hi Rob. I'm mostly a lure piker but I keep trying to do a few different things. We'll do bait again for sure. Check the links below for a decent winter bait fishing videos, not may rigs but we had a few fish in them. Lure fishing needs to be fun so if you are not catching give it a break. It can be a lot of hard graft if nothing is happening. Keep the sessions short, travel light and just enjoy the sport rather than targeting big fish. If you get it right on the right day it can be awesome. I sometimes think live bait feels like cheating I have had the bait taken instantly on some rivers. I do like all types of pike fishing I usually wobble dead baits rather than lure fishing I find I usually get better results.

Everyone is different pal and you have to fish how you want. I mostly lure fish and sometimes know that a livo would do better but I often just enjoy throwing my lures.

I usually get to go every fortnight so I have to maximise my chances. I have recently come into a little money so have considered getting a little boat this would change my method's drastically. going up and down the Trent with lures sounds good. also in Nottingham quite a few places ban lures so it limits my available venues.

River Piker just a quick one mate, on that rig, is the single hook attached with mono ect to the treble or is it wire going straight through? cheers for any help mate

G on a mission It's attached with mono. The idea being mono is more supple and so the small bait can move freely and less chance of the wire twisting or kinky causing a weak point too.

If it's a perch livo, drop shot is easy to get one. We often just use a maggot feeder and catch fish easy enough though. you could also sort out a small pole/whip if you know your spot and that will be perfect for bagging them quickly.
