this is incredible. I haven't heard this story in probably 25-30 years, but I remember the images from the book. I remember the monkeys, and trying to count all the different colored hats. It truly blows my mind how we can hold on to these memories for decades and a single image can bring it all back.

I only remembered the fact that the guy walked around with a stack of hats on his head. Not images. Not monkeys. Not the plot. Not the specific style of hat. Just the stack of caps.

In the book the monkeys say something like "tsss tsss tsss!" One of my favorite childhood memories is my mom trying to read this part to me. So...I'm not into the ad libbed dialog, which I think robs the book of some of its charm. But for the rest, and for putting the illustrations up, thank you!

I remember that book being one of the first I learned to read in the mid-late 1980's. The thieving monkeys give me flashbacks of going to a zoo capuchin monkey exhibit with warnings to leave your belongings on the tour bus prior to entering. The monkeys were notorious pickpockets.

I remember this book! I loved this book but I don't remember if it was my mother or father or even grandfather who read it to me. I loved it enough that when my twins were born in 1994 I it to read to their older sister who was 3 years. old. She loved it too. Of course the twins didn't understand it but I think they liked the way I read it and I think it was calming to them. It was also a way to begin to learn colors. I don't have it anymore but I will try to find it again so I can read it to my grandchildren (that I am waiting for). Thanks for sharing this. P.S. It's been over 55 years since someone read this book out loud to me.

Bebe Speaks You're right. That is what the monkeys did. They did not speak like they do in this video. I should know because I remember when they used to read this story on "Captain Kangaroo." There was a different narrator with a softer voice, and the peddler's voice was softer, too. Also, in the original story, the peddler doesn't just say "You monkeys, you! Give me back my caps!" The first two times, he says "YOU give me back my caps!" The third time, he says, "YOU MUST give me back my caps!" and the fourth and final time, he screams, "YOU BETTER give me back my caps!" (I don't know why, but I always kind of got a kick out of the way he yelled at those monkeys. I found it sort of funny; in fact, just the thought of it is making me laugh as I'm writing this comment). I also enjoyed the final twist to the story, when the monkeys throw all the caps to the ground after seeing the peddler tossing his own checked cap on the earth in frustration, especially since, in his anger, he obviously didn't realize that the monkeys were only imitating him and his hand and feet gestures when they wouldn't give the caps back; similarly, when they eventually threw all the caps down on the ground, they were merely mimicking the way he threw his own cap down. In other words, it was a case of "Monkey see, monkey do" and the peddler didn't realize it. A surprise ending, worthy of O. Henry!
