The 3 Death Valley Hikes You MUST Do: The Golden Triangle

This has got to be the best way to spend one day in Death Valley National Park: The Golden Triangle. We combined three of the most spectacular hikes in the park to make a seriously epic one day itinerary: we started at the Badwater Basin Salt Flats with a 10K sunrise run, headed over to Artist's Palette to catch the early morning glow on the colorful rocks, and finished the day with the Golden Canyon/Gower Gulch loop out to Red Cathedral and Manly Beacon. Three of the most incredibly unique hikes, all with varied terrain, all in one perfect day!
Disclaimer: While going off trail on these Death Valley hikes is legal, it can be dangerous. The rock can be loose and unstable, and we do not recommend leaving the main trail. As always, hike at your own risk.

Thanks Monty! Yes we've really been finding that if we're willing to explore far enough off trail we can always find some beautiful and lonely spot to climb and explore. We started that habit years ago in Joshua Tree, where there's always another inviting rock pile to climb, and have just sort of transferred it to other places where off-trailing is legal. Glad to hear you do the same thing -- it really does enhance the experience of any hike, and also helps us keep our climbing and scrambling skills sharp for when we really need them! ❤️

That's fantastic! So glad this was useful, and very excited for you guys to explore DV your first time. Our biggest tip is just to make sure you get off the beaten path. The main tourist stops will have a lot of people, but as soon as you hike a mile or two past the parking lots you can be all alone in that spectacular landscape, and the feeling of serene solitude is a big part of what makes DV so magical. ❤️

Haha this made us so happy to read! We were just talking about Aalia this past weekend, because we were doing a canyon hike to some waterfalls that was a little bit scary in places but also had an incredible natural water slide at the end of it that kids would love. We were wondering between ourselves if kids would be able to do the hike to get to the water slide, and then we thought of Aalia and decided that she would probably be doing it by the time she was 10! ❤️

What a fantastic ride you guys, thanks so much for this! I’ve always been intrigued with Death Valley, and your video was incredible! Never had a clue the salt flats were ‘not’ flat! I have to say, my favorite parts were Elise’s line flubs before the last hike, watched that several times cracking up, and of course Adam’s honorary ‘vertiginous’ word insertion for me, haha! You guys rock and are loved! Be safe.

We were just laughing and teasing each other the whole day that day, and it's really fun to be able to share what's actually going on with you guys, whether we're focused or scared or pumped up or, in this case, just plain goofy. We so appreciate that you support us even -- or sometimes especially! -- when we mess up!! In November of 2018 I hiked in the middle of the night across the salt flats to the lowest point delineated on US Topo Maps (approx. 36.242/-116.826) in order to take some fantastic astrophotography. It was certainly one of the most interesting hikes I have ever done and thanks to GPS did indeed find the little pile of rocks marking the spot. Great video as usual, reminding me of many awesome adventures I personally had in my favorite National Park…👍🏻

Seeing you both running through Badwater was my favorite…some of that stuff is sharp and will tear a leg up if you fall. Very cool video and hike. Great video as always. Loved seeing the salt "flats", I would love to watch a marathon style footrace there :) The snack spot looked great but it seemed to be missing the leg 'dangle' to make it a perfect spot. I'll give Adam's parkour a 1.5/10 just for the fact he didn't fall or break anything, but that might be a bit generous ;) Great location as always!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha a 1.5 is generous indeed! In watching back the footage, I have to say that had I fallen or broken anything it probably would have been a higher rating, because at least then I would have TRIED to parkour. When I looked at the footage I realized it was a hilariously slow and careful descending move -- understandable from years of careful descending, but the exact opposite of parkour. Unless maybe I invented a new genre: tai-chi parkour? Geriatric parkour? 😂 --A

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much -- yes that salt was super tricky! Do you know if it is precipitation and freezing that causes those hexagonal shapes? We were speculating about what caused them, and why they were so much more pronounced in the winter than they were when we visited in summer, and that was our best theory. Glad you enjoyed it -- so much beauty in the Basin and Range country!! ❤️
@vampireslayer1989
@vampireslayer1989 2 жыл бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Actually I should but I do not without closer examination. What I suspect is happening is the following: The water that creates the salt playa comes from the surrounding mountain ranges which carry the salt and other minerals to the valley floor. Beneath the hard salt crust, the salt is moist and elastic (it flows) via convection. It is likely that the salt crust surface contracts when Death Valley gets very hot, causing the top few inches to crack in hexagonal patterns. Later, the liquid salt below the surface flows up due to the pressure of the salt crust (squeezes up like toothpaste) forming the ridges which dry and harden. Best guess.

Hard to pick which is best they all had their nice parts. If I could run like a gazelle like you guys do the flats would be awesome. (I guess someone HAS called you a gazelle now, Elise) But the dicy peak ascent does have its appeal I can totally relate to that, however the cathedral hills are amazing. I guess if I had to pick it would be Elise's music that wins. Lots of new stuff here, you have been busy. I don't know what it is, but I just love your style. Piano, hip hop, jazz, they all have that same unique Elise style that mesmerizes my ears. As much as I love your relational banter, I almost get disappointed when the music has to pause. What I need is a bunch of these songs to hit the trail with. I would probably just want to keep going and going with that in my ears. I have never been to death valley so thanks for the introduction. You guys really get around, someday I am going to hike into the wildest most remote place I have ever been just to discover Adam and Elise got there before me and are disappointed they are no longer the only ones there. Thanks so much, Peter! Very happy you liked this one, and we both agree with you -- the colors that day were really amazing. Glad we went early, because they kind of washed out in Artist's Palette right when we were leaving as the sun rose higher -- so going early there is key. We just use the regular small GoPro selfie stick that opens into a mini-tripod. They're kind of pricey (like 50 or 60 bucks) and we try to be frugal with most things so we tried an off brand one first. However, it didn't work well for us so then we just bit the price bullet and went with an official GoPro one and it's been great.

Nice video! Been to DV many times; never had I seen the salt built up so high in the basin. Had my "personal" claim to fame in 2018; hiked just over 3 miles out on the BW basin (between the Panamint and Amargosa ranges on one of the hottest days ever between; 3-5pm in the afternoon). Thankfully I turned around at the dead center point; I had planned to hike the 12 mile out and back trek...would have definitely died. Furnace Creek officially registered registered 130; Rangers cautioned my hike stating that the temp at the center would be 3-5 degrees higher...survived and avoided being placed on Darwins list; and also had 15 minutes of fame on ABC News. As stupid of a hike that was; it probably pales in comparison to the Badwater Challenge runners.

That is a really cool and interesting idea! There really have been a lot of changes, such as the fact that we never split up on the trails anymore (back when we did familiar trails it was no problem, but now that we're exploring new and more difficult things we don't want to risk getting separated). And we for sure could tell a lot of stories (like how we've always done big adventures, but we started filming them to keep ourselves entertained and have social connection during Covid, or how Adam Jedi-mind-tricked Elise into writing songs!). Ok, we're going to seriously think about this. Maybe we could do it as a kind of two-year or three-year anniversary of when we started the channel. Thanks so much for coming up with this idea, and also for going all the way back and watching that first video (it's kind of embarrassing how clueless we were back then about filming and editing, but also cool to think about how far we've come in a fairly short time). We'll def give you a shout-out if we put a video like this together! ❤️

@@LiveHardxLoveHard haha, love all that! Everyone starts somewhere and typically on smaller budgets. look forward to it! might get some good q&a’s by asking the fans to comment as well. It might be as inspiring as a climb. 🤛🏼🤙🏼 -Jarrod

As a runner who hates to miss anything, it was great to see you stop and play around!! What I want to know is ...who picks the music? You guys pick sounds usually not heard on a trail video and it is Sooo creative!

Thanks so much Terri! We're the same way, especially Adam -- he is constantly going off trail even on long trail runs to climb or explore something cool. As for the soundtrack, we write and record all our own music -- that's Elise singing on all the tracks. So glad you like it!! ❤️

I didn’t quite catch that, Elise…what was your last adventure of the day? Another epic video guys. Never fail to entertain and inspire

Haha thanks Colby! There are definitely times when I lose all capacity for coherent speech in totally inexplicable ways. That never happens to Adam unless he's hungover, but then it's pretty funny. Glad you liked this one -- we have been loving Death Valley lately! -- E

You guys are nuts running on hose ridges in the Gower Gulch/Golden Canyon section! I loved Death Valley because it was so easy to get away from people. I ended up spending the entire day going off trail! You guys should definitely hit Mosaic Canyon and the Ubehebe Crater next time! BTW where did you guys stay? The nearest AirBnB I could find was in Pahrump, which was almost two hours away. I wish I could've stayed in Beatty, but there didn't seem to be much there.

We're kindred spirits for sure -- LOVE going off trail! Good suggestions, and we will for sure do Mosaic and the Crater next time. We stayed in Pahrump (was such a good deal!), but lets just say that at the speed Adam drives, it was nowhere near two hours away🙈😂

For scree like that I tend to go reverse sometimes and power stomp. You end up creating pads making it easier for the 2nd person, its faster and lower chance of slipping.
