A Merseyside derby in the Wembley sun. Liverpool had already clinched the league title ahead of Everton, and so were going for the Double. The Toffees, in their third successive FA Cup final appearance, were looking for revenge. Time for Dalglish v Kendall and Hansen v Lineker. Time too for Brian Moore and David Pleat.

Wow that game seems like yesterday. I am nearly 57 now. I was 23 going on 24 then. Seems like yesterday which means that another 33 years in the future today will seem like yesterday and I will be 90, except I won't be 90 in all likelihood I will be dead. Yikes let's not go there!! I'm not a Liverpool supporter but what I don't get about Liverpool's 3rd goal in this game is why it is not considered, hands-down, greatest ever FA cup goal scored, and also the greatest team goal ever scored - it's even better than Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil's in the 1970 world cup final. It's just an insanely incredible goal that's unfathomably underrated and not mentioned as much as it deserves.

Absolutely, he had a beautiful touch and his vision and passing ability was second to none. He was the orchestrator in midfield and most of the best play went through him. Don't expect him to run up and down the pitch or track back during the game because it wouldn't happen lol, but when you needed that creativity and vision from midfield then there was none better than big Jan, the Scouse Dane.

eles214 thanks for the comment man. You are right. I mean old Wembley being changed as it did, is like changing Buckingham Palace into a " Trump Towers " type of affair. I thought Wembley was a grade two listed building or something. So far the new Wembley has done no one any favors, least of all football fans who miss the atmosphere like here in this all Merseyside Derby F.A Cup final. I was twelve at the time and saw it on T.V. but I was there at Wembley for the 1989 all Merseyside F.A. Cup final and it lives in my memories for ever and ever, :-). YNWA!

ajwasp they should have done it step by step like how they are now doing to Buckingham palace nou camp the bernabau they are old buildings they did not knock them down so why knock down Wembley stadium they should have started repairing it in 1980

Very good game of football a game to grace any cup final....back in the days when Liverpool had some brilliant players how we could do with them nowadays particularly Ian Rush

When you think Everton very nearly won the double the previous year it must have been gutting for their fans. Molby and Rush were the difference. Nice to hear Brian Moore.

See the amazing ball control by Ian Rush when he went through on goal for what should've been the hat trick. But to be honest Gary Stevens made one error that changed the whole dynamic. He had possession of the ball, there was no problem when the ball was given to him by Mountfield. He tried to play it down the line, he put it straight into Molby's path.

@@UnashamedlyGodSquad Aww lord! Stuff of nightmares pal. I dream that I'm on the reserves bench for Accrington Stanley against Striking Miners XI. I’m parched with thirst. The ghost of Brian Moore's illegitimate-scouser-grandkid tells me ‘if I had only drunk some milk before the game [rather than the feed of pints that night], I might have even got a start on the pitch'. Condescending wanker. But such were ads in the 80s. Suffice if it say we lose 3-1. I wake up from the nightmare, covered in sweat and Liverpool pyjamas. Jaysus wept! There’s no end to the torment.

My first game was 3rd Sept 1965. I was 14 from Wolverhampton on my way to the funfair and got hijacked by thousands of LFC fans. Blackpool v LFC - won 3-2 but Alan Ball ran the match before his transfer to Everton. Roger Hunt and “The Saint” were fab. I’m 68 now and LFC till I die!!!! Klopp is continuing another dynasty started by Shanks and Paisley - True legends!!

It was live on TV here in Holland. We have been going to Feyenoord with the family for decades, but to see that in the seventies and eighties was something special: always admired football and the experience of football in the UK. It's a shame that it's all become so commercial now, but that's an understatement.

Baffles me how Everton didn’t win the league and FA cup that season. They were easily a better team than Liverpool but couldn’t beat them when it mattered. The league derby at Anfield was a better reflection of how close the teams were in skill.
