Most Scousers are from Irish descent. When the potato famine occurred in the mid 19th century, thousands of Irish were driven out of the country through starvation, they all came through Liverpool seeking a new life in America. Most stayed in the city for various reasons. It's a beautiful city filled with culture, talent and wonderful people, why don't you visit.

Massive amount of Welsh people came here. Sober types. Church people. We're almost Welsh here anyway. My grandparents were Irish. Don't forget the Scotch, Chinese, African and West Indian people also; not forgetting our Norse cousins as well. Don't let pride lead to arrogance; we need to welcome all and show hospitality to all. God bless.

I heard once that John Lennon used to play this to his son Sean when he lived in New York in the 1970s.

Could you please inform is this song is really by Dominic Behan or if he bought the rights for it? I heard he is the composer. But he released it in 1964. So how come Paul said his mother used to sing it if she was not alive in 1964? He also said he really thought it was a folk song. And John Lennon used to sing ot to lulluby Sean. It seems he also learned it when a kid. The whole story is quite strange.

@chacmool1st According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, 'Scouse' is derived from 'Lobscouse', a sailor's dish that, I imagine, is as god awful as any other English dish. Being a port town, Liverpool was often inhabited by many sailors, folks with sailing experience, or otherwise sea-wise. Hence, Scouse came to be applied to their dialect, and 'Scousers', as in speakers of this dialect, came to be applied to 'Liverpudlian', itself a joke on the fact that there are no 'pools' in Liverpool.

well the dish Scouse is a Norwegian meal , I saw cans of it for sale , when I was over in Sweden , and Merseyside was part of Dane law when the vikings came over here and settled, but the place is very Irish in it's feel.
