When Rivington Reservoir was constructed in 1852, local millionaire Lord Leverhulme seized the chance to build a fake ruined castle on the transformed landscape. Liverpool Castle is a fake to-scale replica of a real castle which was demolished in 1715, and the replica itself was never completed.
Join me on a walk around Upper and Lower Rivington Reservoir, on the outskirts of Horwich near Bolton in Lancashire. The reservoir hike is a chance to see the vast body of water which serves Liverpool, 30 miles to the southwest.
This walk, especially the castle, is a great walk for adults and children alike. We visit Great Hall Barn, pass Rivington Primary School, spot the cottage with the Liver bird, and finally explore the replica ruins of Liverpool Castle. The walk is about five and a half miles and is generally flat with underfoot conditions that are generally good even in extremes of weather.
Learn a little about the history of these structures within the Lancashire landscape, and consider taking the walk yourself - let me know in the comments if you do!
