This was the first match I ever went to. Thanks for posting. It was freezing cold. I remember they were selling t shirts outside the ground with Brian Keenan, the hostage who'd been released and a speech bubble attached to him, something along the lines of "Is it really 26 years since United won the league?". How times would change.

The second half here shows that, when they clicked, this Liverpool team were still potentially the best side in the country, and this win was accomplished without their two best players - Barnes and Rush. Once again I was listening to the game on Radio 5 (not 5 Live yet) on the night, and the commentary team rather exaggerated how well Arsenal played in the first half. Re-watching it here, the first half was far more even than Mike Ingham or Jimmy Armfield made it sound. No one realises it incidentally, but this proved a pivotal week in the season for Liverpool, and in a bad way. This win really got them into the title race just for a few days, the impetus was with them properly, and, while I don't think they would have actually won the championship, they could have mounted a real, sustained challenge, if only they'd been able to keep that form going. But in the days that followed, they lost something like five players to fresh injuries, and so had to field another makeshift side for the next home match against Chelsea, which they duly lost 2-1. From there, rhythm, confidence and consistency drained away again. What might have been?

They weren’t good but weren’t that bad. It was the next season, the 1992/93 Liverpool were a disgrace.

@@peterlfc1387Agreed. The records show that Liverpool finished the 92-93 season in 6th place (and with a 6-2 win over Spurs). But that position flattered Liverpool, as there wasn’t much of a points difference between them and teams much lower down the table (I think Palace went down with 47 points, for instance). I remember Liverpool going to Middlesbrough in February, where a defeat would have pushed them into the relegation dogfight (fortunately they won).

Remember this game being on the telly. For a football mad teenager when live footy was a fairly rare occurrence, a televised match was always a real treat. Liverpool played particularly well on this evening and looked like genuine title contenders. Unfortunately for Liverpool, performances like this one proved to be increasingly fewer and further between from this season and the one's which followed.

I think in all fairness…Anyone like me who remembers this season well had realised that we were not the same team…Selling Beardsley, Staunton , and McMahon was criminal to say the least…We did win the FA cup…But we didn’t even finish in the top 3 …we finished 6th…And souness gave a interview to the s*n about his triple bypass operation on the 2nd anniversary of hillsborough…What was he thinking?…Frankly…Souness should’ve walked that season in 1991-92…It was clear even then that souness was not the right man as manager…But the damage had already been done…

Souey liked a bung, it was alleged. Maybe that's why he made so many awful signings. So did Cloughie (allegedly). You could never imagine Kenny taking backhanders although he signed some shockers. Carter, Speedie, Tanner and Rosenthal.

Years ahead of other kits except all the ones round Europe that were identical. I remember playing Spartak Moscow and they had our exact kit.
