The previous year was a 1-0 thanks to a John Bailey headed o.g. Legend has it that on leaving the alehouse that night John was asked 'which way yer headin' John?'

The commentator mentioned the low attendance at the European Cup game versus Alkmaar the previous Wednesday. Liverpool's attendances really began to plummet round about this time, and some of their crowds were feeble and undeserving of such a great side.

High levels of unemployment were the reason for the low crowds.

@@johnholmes8178 Aye, Liverpool and Merseyside suffered way more than anywhere else. My father and uncles had to idle their days away on their country estates after the Glasgow and Clyde shipyards closed....

No one's saying the problems were unique to Merseyside, just that unemployment was the reason for the low crowds that you called feeble in your original comment. I would assume crowds were down elsewhere as well at this time. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

ALL attendances were plummeting, so don’t just single out Liverpool.

@@davidmurray5926 Liverpool were always #2 in crowds behind Man Utd. Even Everton's average was just 31,000 when they won the league in 1984/85.
