The Stanley Tobacco warehouse was said to have contained 30 million bricks in its walls. The rounded top structure next to United Molasses was Tate & Lyles giant sugar silo. Having walked most of this route back in about 1970 I was really surprised how few of the old pubs remain along the dock road.

The Tobacco Warehouse is a grade 11 listed building and the largest warehouse in the world. It covers 36 acres. The tobacco would be shipped on and processed in nearby factories and shipped around the world again. The whole road would have been filled with large brick warehouses but a lot were bombed during world war 2. Liverpool was once one of the largest ports in the world. My first job was an office junior at a ships supply store and that whole area was bustling with life. The docks were filled with huge ships. My company faced The Canada Dock. The ships towered over the dock walls. Thanks for bringing back happy memories. The trailer boats are tug boats that guide the ships

I know the areas you walked through, they’re not really on the tourist map. BTW Crosby is pronounced Crosbee. I recommend Sefton park and Lark Lane. Speke Hall (Tudor House) is also worth a look at, though its probably not open due to COVID. Take a train ride to West Kirby, that’s nice, you can walk to Hilbre island, and see some seals it has lovely views over to Wales. Chester is also a beautiful place to visit.

Just for more information some of the strange smells when you first saw the big tanks , the ones with UM on them belonged to United Molasses bringing in sugar from the Caribbean and refining into molasses. The park with the carriage tunnel, Gladstone the future Prime Minister had a large house built not far from there. In the 1700s and early 1800s the Ship owners had large houses around Faulkner Square in the City but with the Irish famine and the overcrowding from people fleeing the famine typhoid and cholera broke out in the city so a lot of the Merchants and Ships Captains moved to Crosby pronounced Crosbee because it was healthier and built these large houses. They could also see their ships coming down the Mersey from the Irish Sea. Captain Smith of The Titanic lived on Marine Terrace and Joseph Bruce Ismay the Managing Director of White Star Line. The chap said that the bombed houses and warehouses from the war had the bricks removed and placed in the beach. Some have writing on them. I’m still watching a couple of hours in. 👍

I was just filming Ismays and Smiths houses the other day. Charles Lightholler lived further into Crosby on Victoria Road I think? either that or Cambridge Road. Sir Arthur Rostron captain of the Carpathia also lived in the area for a while. His family still do. The last person to walk off the Titanic alive Charles Joughin lived in Birkenhead. He was a baker aboard the ship. His story is absolutely incredible of how he managed to survive. His family members again still live in the area.

@@JohnsysChannel I knew about the baker but not the rest. One of the Titanic Stokers Charles Rice was married to a family member and he survived and was in charge of one of the Life Boats he was from Liverpool. I love the Maritime history of Liverpool. My great aunt was a chief stewardess for Cunard, White Star, Ellerman Lines. I know she was on the Mauritania among others and was torpedoed 3 times. Thanks for the information.👍🏻

@@bernadettefarrell8161 We did an exhibition about the Titanic on the centenary of the sinking. We focused on the area of Waterloo and Crosby and looked at the people who were involved and where they all lived. I can't remember who lived on Victoria Road, but it's not far from the Crows Nest pub. Lightholler lived in Cambridge Road, I know the guy who lives in the house. We actually had Captain Rostrons ceremonial sword and uniform for our exhibition, which the family kindly allowed us to borrow. I've never felt so nervous of looking after something in my whole life. This was totally irreplaceable. The family donated his medals he received to one of the Museums, and I believe they had it insured for quite a lot of money!! It's brilliant to hear all the stories and connections to the City. Have you written or recorded anything about your Aunt and Charles Rice? There's plenty of people out there who are interested in hearing the stories about the people involved in White Star/Cunard

Thank-you for the Liverpool tour's. This was my Liverpool in the 1930's, we had an Overhead Railway running the length of the Dock road then with the Clydesdale horse's pulling cargo discharged from those busy Dock's. ❤.

The Tobacco warehouse looks amazing!! Love this walk of old Liverpool so much history i love it. easy to find the way to the beach is to follow the harbour along. but well done. I am so glad you featured Anthony Gormley statues, i so wanted to see them when i was in Liverpool bit didn't get the chance. Anthony Gormley has these life sized statues of himself all over and there are a few here in Edinburgh Scotland, he is an amazing sculptor and artist!!

Good walk. I used to drive on that route between the City and Bootle and my friend's house in Ainsdale. I was always fascinated by the old warehouses. Lots of good memories for me on this latest trip.

Great video but you need a bike! I can recommend taking the Ferry to Woodside, nipping up to see Hamilton Square then back to do the coastal path around the Wirral to say, West Kirby via New Brighton.

a large part of the first half of your walk followed the route of this....which served the docks and the districts behind the waterfront kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ismbn7x3yMyycqs.html The whole area suffered massive damage during WWII, but even more when containerisation (1970s) made most of those miles of docks obsolete and most of the massive warehouse and housing infrastructure that survived the war was demolished too
