This tour explores the natural beauty of the archipelago as well as the political, social issues and movements which have arisen in the Philippines, ranging from reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights to housing crisis and depopulation of the rural areas.

The people in the Philippines may not have as much stuff/money as a lot of other countries but over my 20+ trips (and still traveling there once or twice a year ) around the Philippines the people do seem to be happier and friendlier than most people in 'rich' countries. After my first trip it changed my outlook on life and on my return back to my home country I thought to myself that whatever I had in 'material 'assets back home was not so important as I had thought before. After meeting the maganda/friendly/smiley/simple people of the Philippines they changed my life for the better and I am glad I had the chance to visit the country and travel all around the islands and meet so many great people. Maraming salamat to all those Pinoy that I have meet on my journey's :)

Agree with you, I am originally from the Philippines and finished my college in Canada in the 70's decided to stay and have a Family in Canada and when I compared myself to those who stayed in lived in the Philippines, I am more jealous that I wished I had stayed because of the culture, the way of life and that is the only regret I found in life. Material things that we have accumulated does not make us happy. It is the people and not the material things that makes you happy......

@@Telfund38154172 You are absolutely correct. I was 10 years old when my parents and I immigrated to Winnipeg in late 1974. Worst possible place and time to arrive in Canada. When I became an adult I stayed and settled in Northern Ontario. When my parents retired they left us kids and moved to Florida. It is -40 celsius outside and sometimes I wonder what madness made me stay here. Now I am too old to go back to the old country. My wife and kids, and grand-kids, are utterly clueless about my previous life before we came to Canada. No one around me speaks my dialect, or even Tagalog or English, as I live in a Franco Ontarian community. I feel like I'm going extinct.

You have covered well the squalor side of the country, though in fairness you didn't dwell on the usual blackeyes as prosititution and shanty towns in our dumpsites. This docu was made years ago. The RH Bill is now a Law - R.A. 10354 : Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act signed in 2012 and upheld by the PH Supreme Court more than a year later. Mr. Carlos Celdran died in 2019. Since 2019 as per PH Govt stats, the birth rate is declining. The North & South Luzon Commuter Railway ( NSCR - funded by ADB, JICA ) has started and the North end would be partially opened in 2024. After the pandemic, e-sabong ( online cockfighting ops ) became popular but this is now banned by the Govt. Aside from the pandemic, these are some that have happened since, thus this docu should be posted much earlier or should have a follow through so it would be current and relevant. Be fair and be sure that you take both sides of the issue that you raised. Btw, Palawan is voted in Travel+Leisure one of the Worlds Best and Conde Nast' Travelers' one of Asia's Best Island, its latest in 2022.

Unfortunately the Philippines today has a huge environmental issue with garbage, specifically plastics. It is the largest disposer of plastics in SE Asia.. Much of it goes in the ocean. Your lovely Palawan holds a dark secret of microplastics and nylon fishing lines in the ocean, killing Turtles and other sea life. Also coral in the area. Conde Naste didn't go diving there I guess. If people don't stop dumping garbage in rivers and ocean, your beautiful land will be in for a shock. Stop using and dumping plastics. Also the government needs to provide better garbage disposal, especially in the Provinces and more organized dump sites.

I worked and volunteer in the late 80's and early 90's there. Public health and social services, including population commission has regular visits to the poorest communities. Health and sex education, free vaccinations and birth controls are being offered. Church has a role but it's a free country. Education in grade school middle school, high schools are free with some minor fees, there's colleges and universities funded by the governments. I for one has half tuition plus scholarships offered. It's not what you all think of Philippines being a ghetto.

I have watched this documentary about 15 years ago and now has reappeared in 2023. This should have been binned already as this doesn’t represents the Philippines today. My country is one liveable country, misjudged by many who have just passed by. You should have stayed a bit longer. Senior Westerners are becoming visible in the country for their retirements. And be like the South Koreans’ booming population in the Philippines wanting a piece of our paradise.

The number one reason of poverty in the Phil's is graft and corruption and bad governance, and the natural and human catastrophies. There are at least 16 supertyphoons a year. The big population is now a blessing in this soon to be depopulated world- China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Thailand, etc...countries like the Phil's will be the salvation of depopulated world in terms of labor, humanizing and care. The problem of this documentary is that it only looks at the underside/bad side of the country. It is done after one cursory visit, one interview, thus it is a very shallow one with no insights and understanding. Even the wrong pronunciation of places is very irritating - and disrespectful. Violence and deaths in the Phil's is child's play, compared to the 100 million of deaths caused by world war 1 and 2- in 50 years in Europe, the hundreds of millions deaths in Russia/China, and the US. I suggest that this shallow guy live at least 10 years in the Phil's before he even writes a one sentence. And he has missed the humor, the resilience and happiness of the Filipinos, inspite of.

The indigenous have to agree when there is a public or private development. If they dont want it, the national government cannot do anything about it. The area featured is one of the most difficult to build roads as well. In Philippines, we also have a problem with encroachment to areas that there should be no people living, but ofc they are already there. Maybe the government can build cable cars, tho expensive, so it will be easier to encourage teachers to work there. Family planning ways such as pills and even contraceptive implant are free in most public clinics. I know this as my employees had free contraceptive implants. Therefore, It is a choice of people to have more children, mostly ingrained in religious belief. A child is not always a blessing, esp if you are already poor, but no matter what class in Philippines, I can hear people saying that a child is a gift from God, even tho it is their choice or irresponsibility that child, who have no choice, was born. It is just sad that a child suffers, esp in a poor family.

" I had 7 children with my first husband, and these twins with my second husband " This is lunacy to allow this in a country as corrupt and empoverished as the Philippines. I am currently married to a Filipina and to this day, my biggest source of gratitude is from knowing that I was able to rescue my wife from a slowly sinking ship called the Philippines. Her family is still there and her parents are in their late 60's - early 70's. As a Christian who is against abortian, I believe that an island nation such as the PI (Philippine Islands) should be at least monitoring and taking more of a hands on responsible approach towards single parent families. Those who impregnate a woman should be made to raise the child, even if that means time in prison. Contraception at this point in time MUST be facilitated to allow a certain level of care for the children that have already been born. It's strange that a government that promotes a Catholic/Christian "ideal" does not have the money or means to follow through with the care of it's own people. Sad

The Philippines reportedly ranks 55th among countries having the best education system in the world, and enjoys a relativelyt high adult literacy rate, reportedly at over 99%. So why is extreme poverty still exist in the Philippnes? Poverty in the Philippines is like a vicious cycle, and that cycle is re-set every election year. Most Filipinos work hard to give their children a good education. They will steal, beg or borrower (borrowing a line from a song) just to send their children to school. This children grow to become working but almost always find themselves in the same situation as their parents - with very little improvement in their quality of life. Fortunately, most Filipinos know what the problem is and how to end the problem. It's a matter of standing up to those who perpetuate poverty and helplessness.

Did you really think 40 years of American colonization would teach the Filipinos about Democracy? Filipinos likely learned the language of Democracy but I don't think they have really understood the concept. For instance, how does one explain the nepotism that is rampant in local politics? An Uncle (in the Philippines) once told me all countries are corrupt at some level. Unfortunately Philippine corruption is in a league of its own; Filipinos flaunt it and even brag about it.

Much potential, and hopefully the Upcoming generations can heal and move their country forward. Every country has it’s positives and negatives yet our futures are so often determined by the zip code we are born in. It’s inspiring to see the younG people engaged and working for positive changes. The old guard will die off and Their youth will become the “new guard”. Unfortunately, keeping youNg women barefoot and pregnant in poverty, brings challenges, with lack of resources available, promoting generational poverty and the despair it brings. @@carlosnorris352 I don’t think absolute ideal is achievable. Most religions ‘re for a better world. Quote from Dalailama: “on the level of a religious practitioner, my second commitment is the promotion of religious harmony and understanding amongst different religious traditions. Despite philosophical differences, all major world religions have the same potential to create better human beings. It is therefore important for all religious traditions to respect one another and recognize the value of each other's respective traditions. Thirdly, I am a Tibetan and carry the name of the Dalai Lama. Tibetans place their trust in me. Therefore, my third commitment is to the Tibetan issue. I have a responsibility to act the free spokesperson of the Tibetans in their struggle for justice. As far as this third commitment, it will cease to exist once a mutually beneficial solution is reached between the Tibetans and Chinese. However, my first two commitments I will carry on till my last breath.” www.dalailama.com/the-dalai-lama/biography-and-daily-life/questions-answers

I don't see any of this LGBT suppression maybe it's on the book but my girlfriend's a Filipina and her brother is gay and is a crossdresser and he also happens to be a lot of fun to hang out with so when I'm in Cebu we hang out with him a lot and no one gives a who that he's gay crossdresses. Maybe 20 years ago people really cared but not anymore. In women now get sex education and have access to birth control and condoms not hard at all to get free family planning now and the birth rate has dropped a lot right now it's just over replacement it will likely drop all over replacement in the next few years.

This narrative that the Catholic church is suppressing birth control is nonsense. When Filipinos migrate to rich countries, and they thrive economically there, and they are not suppressed, they continue to have large families. It is not uncommon for Filipinos to voluntarily have 3 or 4 or even 5 children per family. They love large families. So let's make this about something else, but not suppression by the Catholic church. They value family over religion. Children are a gift.
