I argued about this was back in 1998 in the little town I lived in. The school board was removing the trades classes, auto repair , welding and carpentry as they were saying they needed to focus more on college prep. Their reasoning for this was that 60% of HS grads went off to college. I asked what about the other 40%, are we just going to throw them out into the world without anything? I asked "Who is going to build your houses, your roads, fix your cars etc?" The reply was thinly implied as racist, um Hispanics. I also asked how many of that 60% ended up in the field that they studied in. No one had an answer, so it was a worthless number. These are the kids who signed up for all of these loans, not knowing what they wanted to do, and are now demanding someone pay their loans in 2024 .

It got even wrost when their own college feel like they teach their student that they think they teaching a worthless subject... i went to a community college to learn animation (the university that teach animation that i want to go got shut down due to lack of student) before got into university to take graphic design. I remember on the day i got my diploma, my teachers was glad when they heard that i trying to get bachelor in graphic design. They say it nice that i change my major from animation to graphic design becuase they say it more sucsesful.... That upset me becuase that not true, Malaysia animation are sucessful. Just last year, our country cartoon got first place in Japan Anime Award. And dont get me started on the upcoming next week episode of Boboiboy Galaxy. If you see the promo, you be jaw drop over how high quality of the animation is....

High schools prep kids for college for the sake of tying them to loans, they couldn’t care less what they do, as long as they always pay for there loans so banks and institutions have a steady stream of debt payers.

I was a tradesman before I became an engineer. Engineering makes good money and requires a degree, however with all the courses I did in college, I can confidently say you can learn 90% of the of engineering online… like its all there. The only barrier really is experience, the FE Exam and the PE Exam for licensure. Based on what I learned between the two career paths, they are fairly similar. Engineering is just more math heavy, and trades is more on experience and intuition. Combine the two and you have a really good engineer.

Guidance counsellors for me back in 1983 were to sell me on college and away from farming, construction and plumbing. But looking back, I have been unemployed more than employed by going to college. And developing software is always subject to people who would work cheaper.

Micro MIke - LOVE it. Make it happen, someone, please 🙂 And to have someone else remember fondly Fantastic Voyage - I loved that movie when I was a kid. Yes, I'm dating myself... For the record, our son literally just got his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering last Saturday... but he's debt free because he earned scholarships and grants, and did the first two years at a tech school then transferred to a college transfer program for the last two. He wanted to work when he first got out of high school but couldn't get hired, and worked with Voc Rehab for a while (his primary diagnosis is on the autism spectrum) before they said he ought to go to college and use that brain of his 🙂 Everybody has a different path, and some of them go in curlicues 🙂

I can't work with my hands either. I attended both undergrad and graduate school and I still ended up working in retail. There are plenty of opportunities: start a website, an online business, etc.
