Whoohoo! It is a day of celebration today, we made the final payment on our house ! What a good feeling this is. Paid off a 25 year loan in 17 years using many of the frugal hints and tips from this channel. We are going to the Royals game tonight to celebrate. Going to have a cookout on Monday, church on Sunday, but not much else planned. It is a good weekend to just chill! Didn't know I was supposed to be trimming the lilac bush now so will add that to my weekend list.

I thoroughly enjoyed your video! With your mention of caring for lilac bushes, it makes me sad that I didn’t think to take a cutting from the lilac bush in the yard of my childhood home after my parents passed away. But perhaps I can plant a new one in their honor……🥰 Your sourdough journey will be interesting to watch. I’ve never attempted it, and since we eat gluten free bread now, I’m feeling intimidated to try sourdough with the gluten free flours. But I’ve read that it’s definitely possible. Mary on the channel Mary’s Nest has a video about it, which I plan to check out again. Very glad to hear that you and Paul have more time to devote to his parents and other activities since you scaled back your videos. You two must do what you have to do for YOUR lives. Take good care of yourselves and I look forward to seeing you in your next video! ❤️-Brenda

No plans for the weekend besides calling my sisters. As we grew up, we always celebrated this weekend because both our parent's birthdays were this weekend. Now that both parents are gone, I'll just connect with my sisters and probably reminisce. 😊 As you made the strawberry cake, I was thinking blueberries! I really can't try it though because of diabetes. When I moved into my 100 year old house, I over trimmed a gorgeous lilac bush. It died. I was shocked and just a little bit devastated. Live and learn. I should have learned first.... to let the lilac live. 😭 I'll be so eager to see the flowers 🌺 that grow around your mailbox! What a great idea! Love to you both, and to both Dixie and Loris, too! ❤️

I recently saw a man planting seeds by dropping them through a narrow long pvc pipe instead of bending down or crawling. We have started using a grabber for lawn cleanup. It made it much easier. Save your back and knees when you can. We were able to accomplish more work by using an unconventional tool.

thanks for the lilac tip! I noticed it bloomed more this year because I trimmed it last year. I still have my flowers blooming and I just made lilac syrup. Its great! and I ended up with 2 litres of syrup with 8 cups of flowers. Maple syrup is expensive so this on pancakes is a substitute. But dandelion honey is much better as its a stronger taste! I need to make more but I have done too good a job weeding previous years so I have harvested all the dandelions. I need to sow some in a controlled container I boil the greens and make honey with the flowers. I use a paper towel with veggies, herbs and strawberries to absorb moisture to prevent spoiling. Mushrooms especially spoil quick but with a paper towel inside container they keep weeks longer. That cake looks good! Yum!! That bag of $3.99 goodies was a deal. Freeze them! I wish we had an app like that in Canada. Ppl are skipping meals because of inflation. We eat once a day too now sometimes twice if we have oatmeal for breakfast. But the meal I make for the day is from scratch and complete. We are not starving. But being anemic is problematic with our inflation. I can’t raise animals for meat. I made sourdough yeast before but it needs to really ferment to work. I use a coffee filter and jar ring to ferment it. My grandma in Italy kept it on countertop with oiled fig leaves on top in a bowl. I don’t have fig leaves to do it like this. Theirs lasted years and they shared it between everyone.

With no discard sourdough starter, the no discard part starts AFTER your starter is mature, active and bubbly…about 7-10 days. While you are establishing it, you MUST discard some everyday because your baby Beatrice is getting older and bigger each day. The first day you fed her like an infant, but you are continuing to feed her that same amount and she's a teenager now and you will starve her if you keep feeding her and not discarding right now. I made that mistake when I started mine (Jane Dough), but on my third attempt, I was successful and she is now healthy and active. I only feed her once a week or so and she lives in the refrigerator when I’m not baking with her. I’m looking forward to your recipes because I just love baking with my sourdough starter and have taken a lot of classes and workshops on sourdough. I’m always excited to try something new. Best of luck with Beatrice!

OK, how much should I be taking out then? Do I also need to up the flour and water if I’m taking some of it out?
@lindabudzik9583
@lindabudzik9583 Жыл бұрын
Keep about the same amount you had the first day (about 4 ounces I think) and then discard anything else. Then add the same amount of flour and water (2 ounces of each), stir it, and put your lid on and repeat the next day. I know it feels like you are wasting flour, but that’s what you have to do to build a strong starter. You only do this until your starter is really bubbly and doubles after it is fed. That’s why you use a rubber band around your jar so you can estimate when it is doubled. You won’t be able to bake with it until it is nice and strong anyway. It can actually be a unsafe to bake with starter as you are building it. The yeasts and bacteria from the air are fighting in your jar for supremacy. When the strong, healthy yeasts have fully beat the unsafe bacteria, your starter is ready to use. The other (easier) option is just to ask someone who has a strong sourdough starter for some of theirs (or order it from King Arthur Flour or someplace else on the internet). It isn’t rude to ask at all though. Bakers are happy to share some of their starter…just like gardeners are happy to share cuttings from their plants. Once your starter is strong, healthy, and doubling after a feeding, you can then start baking with it in its doubled state and using your runny discard to make all kinds of yummy things. Crackers and pancakes are particularly good, but a lot of people add a little starter (like a quarter of a cup…not enough to taste) to everything they bake-cakes, brownies, cookies, banana bread, muffins, etc. As long as you are just adding a small amount, it won’t upset the balance of the recipe and just bulks up your baked goods a little. That's the real no discard magic!

Yes the app is amazing!!!! I used it for the second time this week and got good bagels. 16 for 4.99! They were fresh and delicious. I froze the leftovers for pizza bagels. Just a note- if a store runs out of the surplus for your order before your scheduled pick up, they will cancel your order. Just make sure to check your email before you go pick up. My bagel order was cancelled last Sunday because they ran out. When i ordered on Tuesday, there was no shortage. I love the app ❤

If you attempt this please note if your starter has any (even tiny) spots or streaks of yellow, orange, pink or green, or your starter has any mold growing throughout it, or if it turns an odd color, or has a really foul odor do not use it! Discard it...

I'm excited for your sourdough adventures! I make it via Shay Elliot's method with a dry starter. SO many different ways to approach sourdough. We will be busy this memorial day weekend. We are doing a small kitchen reno this weekend (back splash--I got the materials for Mother's Day!)...and we'll also be tending to our garden and opening our small pool. We will most likely have burgers, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, etc. for a celebration dinner. I'll be much too busy to do anything elaborate, but anything cooked and/or eaten outdoors is great! Happy Memorial Day!

What great timing! I'm so excited about your sourdough starter experiment! My husband and I have been baking our own bread and plan to begin our starter after our mini break on June 2-4. So I'm thrilled you guys have already started and will be watching your progress. This weekend we will be home doing projects around the house. We are all stocked up with food and drink and so don't plan on going anywhere which works for me!! Enjoy your weekend together Emmy and Paul!

Anne this whole sourdough process is a work in progress lol! We are honestly learning as we go. If you attempt this please note if your starter has any (even tiny) spots or streaks of yellow, orange, pink or green, or your starter has any mold growing throughout it, or if it turns an odd color, or has a really foul odor do not use it! Discard it...

Ahhhh . . . you should get yourself a sifter. It will save you so much time. They probably have them in Amish country. Although, you really don't have to sift flour anymore. I use the strainer that you have to put my baking power and baking soda through to get rid of the lumps, and then use a whisk to mix the soda and salt together. Just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it

Thank you for yet another fun and interesting video! Evidently I have been trimming the lilac wrong for years! Also: as far as sourdough "discard," my favorite thing to do is to make crackers-- with silicone baking paper it is a breeze. Crackers are so expensive all of a sudden, so yes. It's super easy to make your own. My favorite combo is rye flour and rosemary, made with olive oil. SO appreciate your videos. You make it all fun. Also: re: your bagel cutter: I had a friend who was an emergency room doctor in Manhattan. He said every weekend they got people coming in with what is known as a "bagel cut" across their palm. He said its a very common accident, and recommended a bagel cutter!

I love lilacs!! One of my favorite all time flowering bush/tree. I finally found a bush that will grow where I live. I’ve always wondered about the sourdough starters…what they were and how to do them. It will be fun watching what you make from yours. I laughed when you asked about our weekend plans. We have a large music festival in our town and my goal was to stay home and hunker down for the weekend (HA…you know what they say about making plans). My DIL owns a bakery and was one of the food vendors at the festival. So I became the shuttle service to get folks to/from the festival and I also spent time with my son & DILs’ dogs. Great thing for them is that the bakery sold out of their food, every day and one of their items was picked as one of the top five at the festival!! So proud of my kids!

I just used this app for the first time today... I bought the left over bread from a local supermarket at the end of the day and it came with a bunch of things (bread and pastries). I am a little late commenting, I like that you put the strawberries in a jar to keep. I have been doing that with chopped onions and peppers and they really do keep for quite a while. And when they are in the fridge in the jar they are clear and easy to see, so I don't forget about them. Plus, with the vibrant colors they still look delicious.

To start the weekend off I made steamed spiced shrimp for dinner along with a homemade cocktail sauce and then some sweet potato oven fries. It was delish if I do say so myself - and I do say so myself, lol. ☺ Hubby and I just did a shot of Jack Daniel's toasting all of the people who have given their lives in defense of this country. On Monday we will be having Hebrew National Hot dogs which is a fav of mine that I rarely eat because I rarely eat red meat and nothing so highly processed. But a couple of times a year it's okay. We'll have baked beans and the housemate is going to pick up some corn on the cob at the farmers market. I will be doing some work in the garden tomorrow. The cucumber plants are coming along nicely but need some supports as well as the tomatoes. I also need to harvest lettuce. All in all, I'm looking forward to a nice relaxing long weekend. Thanks for another good vlog!
