To be fair, a single person shouldn’t be paying that much if they make less than 4 times that amount. She has a live in bf so that helps but if she was single, she should and hopefully would have a roommate. The most I ever paid in rent was $1400 (my part of a two bedroom) and I made $100k and that was NYC, not Portland Oregon so it should be possible to pay less.

Keep looking if ya got time! You can easily get a duplex for this cost and have yourself a mini yard and way less neighbors. It is possible! Houses also are rented out around $1700 in the metro area if you can foot the additional $300. I just had to move in May and got an amazing 2bd 2 bth 1100 sq ft duplex with a garage and yard for $1300 in SE Portland. It's possible, look for owners who are renting themselves. Craig's list can be sketchy, but it also has many hidden gems!! Its nuts though, my first apartment here in 2002 was a 2 bd 1 bth for $475... inflation is insane! 😳

@@jones2277 highly doubt it. Did you see her work? She sells her refurbished furniture, probably works a lower income but not too crazy job. This is a pretty nice 1 bedroom. I'm from Cali so I don't know about Portland, but it's common to even have roommates for studios if money really is tight (maybe look for someone to pay 500 instead of 700, could still make it work). They even have a middle barrier wall. For a college kid? You can totally get by, especially if you're okay getting your hands dirty. I work in advertising now, she's getting enough of an audience to get some income from her tiktok through sponsors, which looks like she's doing affiliated work. Got room to grow, sure, but at 22y/o? I'm confused. Is your boyfriend not on the lease? Is that how you were able to get approved for this unit? Because if that's the case, you should check with your landlord. That is typically against most lease terms I have seen, and I've worked in property management for 10 years.
@nataliefontane

@Luís Andrade, I definitely saw my fair share of boyfriends/girlfriends who bailed on their partners and left them trying to cough up 100% of the rent. But both parties are financially responsible, so both of them would be screwed if the remaining person couldn't cover rent. This would be the case even if they were married, though I suppose you'd have the legal system more on your side in that example.

I have had a couple of apartments in Portland. Your apartment is cute but unless you have express written permission for your boyfriend, cats, and decor ahead of time you may find you don't get your deposit back and you may even get fines for things like holes in the wall when you move out. - Your boyfriend living there if he is not on the lease is illegal. If you don't already have approval for your cats you may get fined- in Portland $50 a month of pet rent per animal on top of a pet deposit equal to one months rent is typical. I did not see either of these in your initial fees. Make sure both cats are on the lease agreement! Drilling into the ceiling and walls to hang a hanging chair and hammock are DEFINITELY against most lease agreements as these can do damage to the ceiling and walls. Painting without the landlords permission is against most lease agreements and in Portland you have to sign a mold provision stating that you will limit the number of plants you own. Just be aware. Your Grandma is going to be on the hook for any damage you do so get your BF and cats on the lease & fix things properly before you move out.

This is insane. 1200 for a 1 bedroom 700sq ft apt and even with multiple jobs and school monies, she had to have a co-signer. Why? Because 4 times the rent is insane. 1 person rarely make 4 (× 1200= $4,800/month) times the rent.. in this case 5grand. How many people including yourself do you know that make 5,000/month and are willing to move into a single bedroom apartment, 700 sq feet ?? I cant stand how Portland has shifted.
