Living in a Chinese Hostel for 3 Months: Shanghai American Expat

While in transition for another China-Japan move I spent 3 months living in a hostel in Shanghai. There were 4 people in that room and very little space. It was a very cheap hostel though. We got up close and personal for a long time. One of the roommates in there has been living inside for 2 years! English speakers can make a good living in China just teaching English to little kids. If you have the right connections you can do private lessons and the money just pours right into your pocket. If you want a place to chill for a while, this Shanghai hostel is a good choice.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

That is such an amazing life. Traveling, studying and teaching. I speak English, Mandarin and French (I am a Chinese Canadian) and I am planning to study and travel in Chinese, English and French speaking countries. I might learn Spanish as well because there are many Spanish speaking countries and it is relatively easy for me due to my French. Unfortunately, it is difficult for me to teach English in China due to my Asian appearance.
@OrientalPearl
@OrientalPearl 4 жыл бұрын
You are very correct about that. There is a lot of discrimination against Asian English teachers in China. As a Chinese you would be discriminated against by other Chinese while teaching English. It's unfortunate.
@tailiu223

@@OrientalPearl Yes, they think white people are genetically native English speakers while Asians can never be native speakers even after 2 generations in Canada. It is so funny. Well, if you are asking how long I could last in a hostel... I'll answer it this way.. I was given the option of staying in the dorms at my college or staying in my parent's house for another two years with super strict rules and curfews and whatnot. I chose to stay home because there would be four in a room like that while I get my own room at my parent's house and can mooch off some groceries and don't have to pay to live here (besides paying my bills). So... Yeah, I couldn't last in a hostel if I was given other options. I'd probably choose to live with a host family if I was elsewhere in the world.

Is there a time limit how long you can stay at the Hostel why were you at the hostel did your lease run out from your apartment in Shanghai
@OrientalPearl
@OrientalPearl 4 жыл бұрын
There is no time limit for this hostel. I didn't renew my lease and went to visit America for a while. When I came back to Shanghai there was still some time left before going to Japan, so I just chilled here for 3 months.

Everyone thinks China is rich until you realize students sleep 8 to 1 room vs 2 to 1 room in us universities, which is basically the same as thirty years ago. My dad slept in a room with a 4 person bunk.

Heck yes! There is no comparison. Japan is way more expensive. It's only second to Singapore here in Asia.

The working class can not afford such a tuition fee like that. Or they really put too much on Education. That's why I can't live in Shanghai, quite scary living cost! From rent to fees on education (or self-improvement)

The tuition at Fudan's graduate school for Chinese students is 8,000 yuan per year and 1,200 yuan for housing. It's extremely cheap. Most Chinese can afford it.

Yeah, I'm surprised that they don't have an elevator. Sadly this hostel didn't survive the coronavirus. It's gone. It was cramped and a bit dirty, but it was my place and I miss it.
