Whittier, Alaska, is a unique town where nearly all residents live under one roof in the Begich Towers. This incredible building houses a post office, school, grocery store, and more, providing everything the community needs. Whittier is accessible through a single tunnel that opens at 5:30AM and closes at 11:15PM(summer schedule), sealing the town from the rest of Alaska overnight. Join me as I explore the fascinating life in this extraordinary town, accessible by one way in and one way out.

Hope you enjoyed the video. I’m not a documentarian. I just filmed a small town through my eyes. A lot of people have visited this town and since I’m in Alaska, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to visit this town as well. Thanks for your continued support. It means the world to me.

The Whittier tunnel was built by the military and finished in the 1940s. During the Cold War, it was meant to be a base of operations in the event of a nuclear attack. The military had special high tech training cars built just for that purpose. I remember, in the early 90s, I read an article about the military trying to sell the train cars because nuclear treat was diminished. Another fun fact, Portage was an actual town on the highway side of the mountains. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1964.

It’s def more white people here. Growing up I barely had any black role models 😩 When I’d have a black doctor it was like a unicorn. Still kinda the same really but since we have so many people moving here “to start a new life” and soldiers with their families, we are getting more diverse.

Seen several documentaries about this town on KZfaq and even one guy who was allowed to tour the entire building.

Oh man I saw this place years ago, there was a special on tv about it. They actually interviewed some of the people and showed the apartments and everything you showed in the video. I forgot this place. Thank you for sharing with us and as always safe travels
