Yes, especially if it makes me debit free you bet I would! But we already have one and houses. My hubby has a side hustle of renting them out. We live in the desirable florida and it’s hot property where the homes are at because of the school zoning and beaches.

Our oldest son lives in a shed that was already on our property that we converted. We built a septic system with 55 gal barrels.. Use plastic and insulation on the floors to help with the cold.

After college, I bought a new 30ft trailer and lived one year in a nice RV park in central Texas. It was cheaper to pay the trailer bill plus the park fee than to continue to live in my apartment. So that decision was a no-brainer. Plus I wasn't sure where I was going to end up living. Two years later, I moved it up to the back of my parents property in northeastern Texas. My dad put in a service pole and a DIY septic system from a 55 gallon drum with two lateral lines. I lived there for three more years. Since my parents decided not to charge me rent, I let them have the trailer. My parents then moved it down to southern MS and lived in it for 7 years while they cleared their land and Dad built their one bedroom house. Now the trailer serves as a guest house. Here are some tips that worked for me when I lived in it: To conserve propane, use electricity to cook. Those 30lb tanks were hard for me to pick up when filled so this was important. I used a toaster oven, electric skillet, and a plug in style two burner stove. To this day I still use that skillet and stove from 15 years ago. I also used an electric blanket as well as a programmable space heater. That space heater was GREAT in the bathroom! It would come on 15-30 minutes before I needed to get ready for the day. That helped with the ambient temperature as well as the pipes but not the drains during freezing temperatures. Hot water and/or was the only thing that would unfreeze the drain. Putting insulation on my hose helped but there were times when it froze. That's when I sponge bathed from water I kept in jugs and heated as needed. When my parents moved it to their property, they put it under a built cover. That helps a lot as the sun deteriorates a RV quickly. The plastic components in the bathroom (tub, tub surround, sink, faucet, and toilet) all took a beating as there is a skylight in there. Most of them have been replaced. The rv has an entire back bathroom without a window so Dad put a shed behind it with an electric water heater, which broke, as well as a washer and dryer. He also installed a plug that could handle a Mr. Buddy electric heater. So no more propane is needed. An RV is cheaper upfront than a tiny house but will not stand up to daily living long term without a lot of repairs. The refrigerator and microwave went out and Dad replaced them with regular ones as the RV styles were too expensive and unnecessary as these appliances would not experience the earthquake movement that traveling causes. Good luck on your decision!

Yeah my 50 gal. tank was stolen, then I was all electric after that haha. I had an electric skillet, toaster oven , and regular microwave. And those little space heaters that you could set to just come on then off as the room was brought up to about 65. I owned mine for 30 years. Redid interior once and repaired roof etc as needed.

In 1995/1996, I lived in a 32ft 1954 Spartan manor trailer for a little over a year. It allowed me to financially get thru nursing school. It was hooked up to city water and sewer. We were fortunate to find a small reputable mobile home park, that allowed us to rent a spot. You can put heat tape on any exposed water supply line and that will prevent freezing. It had a propane heater, so it was always toasty warm. You can make your own composting toilet. KZfaq has lots of videos on tiny houses and ideas on what they have.

Our family of 5 lived in a RV (42' fifth wheel) for 3 yrs and the last 6 months of that was during the winter in North Dakota. I think a tiny house would be a much better and longer lasting solution, and more affordable financially if they were to build it themselves. Things seem to fall apart very easily in a RV. For example, in our brand new RV, the shower stall cracked in several place because it was flimsy, etc. Heaters and water heater eliments broke. Insulation is very thin in a RV as well, even if it is all weather, so power bills are much higher. However if you were to find an affordable RV and retrofit it with foam insulation and fit it with more sturdy things, they would make it last longer. As far as staying warm in the winter, you would need to skirt the bottom of the RV/tiny house and run heaters underneath, this will help alot. When we came to ND for the first week, it was as cold as -24 without the wind factor. It was so cold we had ice on the inside walls and windows of the RV. In order to make things work for the winter, we had to do skirt the bottom plus cover our windows and slideouts with 2" insulation to keep in the heat. It was a dark box - no fun at all. We ran the propane heaters plus electric heaters, but it stayed warm for the most part. Luckily our lot rent covered electric, but I'm sure the bill would have been high if we were on our own system. That's why I think in the long run, unless you want your kids to move back in with you in the wintertime or if something breaks like a heater or hotwater heater, or shower, it is best to go the tiny house option. As far the toilet, we had an RV toilet hooked up to the sewer at the campground(s) but others do use composting toilet. There's a lot more information on that on the internet. As far as water, you will need a heated hose to keep the water from freezing. I hope that helps. Thanks, Jill McCoy from ND

There is an heated water hose you can get to keep your water from freezing. For the black & gray tanks, there are also a heated blanket that you stick to those tanks to keep them from freezing. It is possible to live in a RV year round. You can also hang 100 watt bulbs in the under storage areas with exposed water pipes. Composting toilet waste can be tossed in the garbage. There is also what they call Honey Wagons. They will come out and pump out the tanks with their truck. It can run $40 - $70 a trip. RV tanks don't hold a lot, so will teach them to conserve.

Check You tube the toilet is replaced by a 5 gallon can and a bit of saw dust with a little backing soda is added to bury your waste. what is in the can is buried about once every week or so. Urine is easier to put in a jug and disposed of. You can dispose of the bags in the garbage if you have garbage collection I would use extra strength garbage bags.

Composting toilet!! My composting toilet is easy and no smell (use sawdust for poo, and a urine diverter). Throw the composted poo in trash/ landfill. Humanure is safe for gardens after 2 years of composting.Don't need all season camper, just insulate/skirt it. I live in a 34 ft rv in my friends back yard. We had to run an electric pole with 30 amp hookup ($300). Gray water (shower and sink) water I use to water my gardens. No black tank cause I use composting toilet. Easy life and fun.

We lived in an RV for 6 years. There are lots of different solutions to toilets. Never lived in a tiny house, but I can tell you from experience that RVs/campers are not built to withstand full time living and have constant repair issues. In my thinking a tiny house would be built better. Freezing pipes is an issue but can be dealt with pipe insulators and even electric heating coils. Composting toilets use sawdust or other organic material and the end product can be used as compost for gardening. Doesn't stink.

I commend you on being strong enough to push them out of the nest. It's really the best thing you could do for them even though I'm sure you want to make things as easy as possible for them. When I was in my 20's I moved out of my parents house on Long Island and in to a tiny 250 sq. Ft. efficiency apartment in Manhattan with a fold down Murphy bed. It was smaller than the closet I had in my parents home! It was outrageously expensive but it forced me to work my butt off and allowed me to develop a work ethic that really paid off.

Good idea, build a skirt around the base. Gut the interior and ad insulation, floor walls and ceiling. Water tanks inside should be ok with propane heat. External tanks will freeze. Could use a bucket compost toilet. RV trailer would be much cheaper. Tiny house would be a great project, could never get finished.

We did get freezing weather but not much.We wrapped our pipes and did not have much of a problem. We loved it and hate now that we bought a house. Now are bills are stressing us. We bought a used park model, they do have a holding tank but you do have to dump it. We had a central heating system.Good luck on figuring it out.

The best thing to do is buy a cheap camper that has all the appliances that work for maybe $400 or under and pick up a flat trailer or old pull trailer for $800 or under. Then take off all the panels inside and the ceiling panels and the flooring and check the condition of the wood framing. Replace what is bad with 2x4s and add 2x2s to the existing good framing to make it 2x4 in width. Then put in new house insulation. Reinstall any good wall, ceiling and floor panels and replace what is bad. Do any needed repairs and use the cheap camper appliances to replace bad trailer appliances. Or you could buy a flatbed trailer and build a tiny house and use the appliances and parts from the camper to save money. If you are doing 2 or 3 of them- you could buy about 4 older pull trailers for $3,000 and probably end up with 2 or 3 good tiny homes for another $3,000 in materials that you have to buy new and can't cannibalize. Then tear down the one or two trailers you have left over and sell them as flatbed trailers to get some of your money back. You can also sell left over good appliances and parts too. As far as where you can park them- check local zoning and regulations and find a cheap piece of land that allows them to live in an rv while they are building a house for $200 a month or less payments and then get a permit to build a small inexpensive house like maybe 350-400 sq. foot home. You can renew the building permit for very little money and usually the only requirement is to make significant progress on the building. When the kids get done building the home- they can then either keep the trailer or sell it to get some money back or they could move on to another property and sell the home they just built for profit. I don't imagine if you have acreage that you would not be allowed construction trailers and construction teams (multiple trailers) on the same property during building. It would be a really good idea for them to help each other build each others first home.

We are living in an RV right now, not by choice, our house flooded last month most of the state flooded so there is no place to rent until we can get our house rebuilt. We just hooked the water, electricity and septic to the house outlets. We have well water and a septic tank so no problem with city utilities. It does not snow here but we have property in Colorado so we will be bringing the RV there next month So far living in an RV is not bad, it could be worse in our case.

our teenager lives in an old camper, tow behind kind, out back. we used a stand up oil filled electric filled radiator. The teen before her let the pipes freeze and they burst. so a cheap composting toilet was made from a cheap bedside toilet, filled with peat moss. for water, solar showers, point of use water heaters are inexpensive options. in the kitchen, we put a 3 gallon jug with a spout behind the sink on the counter.....just keep filling it......we have done this for a while with mixed success.

A house trailer pulled with a pickup isn't called a camper. A camper is usually mounted on a pickup or truck body. Anyway mine was a 30' park model because it had a regular commode and no holding tank, designed for trailer parks or a place where you have to be hooked up. An RV has holding tanks, water tanks, chargeable batteries. They're either pulled by a power unit or they're a motor home. If you're in an unincorporated area or out in the country with no codes., you can get 2 55gal. barrels and dig your own septic tank. I've done it in lots of places with my park model. If its a trailer, you can build skirting around the bottom. We used small propane tanks . I went all electric when my tank was stolen. Just used small space heaters set on low and if a big freeze came, we let the faucets dribble till the temps improved.

Hi! I live in a regular house, but I'm interested in tiny houses and full-time RV living. I'm not from the US, but most -if not all- of the content I've seen so far on the subject are from people in the US or Canada, so the resources I've gathered so far may be helpful in some way. All the topics have more or less been covered during the stream, but I'd like to leave my contribution below. 6:40 It's possible to winterize a regular RV - there are several videos on that, each covering a different topic, so I can't point you to any specific one. 7:06 RVs have gray and black water tanks, which have separate connections you can hook up to at RV camps - I don't know how it's dealt with when you're full-timing outside RV camps, but I guess there are youtubers who may have already uploaded videos on that. Tiny houses tend to have either regular (water) toilets or composting ones - the separett (liquids and solids go their own separate ways) seems to be a very popular choice. 8:14 As far as I know, there are different classes of RVs (class A, class C, class Super-C, class B), trailers and fifth-wheelers, and tiny houses on wheels or on a foundation. People differ in their preferences, so I usually come across either side talking about the (dis)advantages of each one. Yes I have lived in a 26 foot travel trailer they are very cold in the wintertime you have to run the furnace all day you have to keep the propane tanks filled you have to keep a hose wrapped with heat tape they have holding tanks you can tap in to the sewer to dump your tank or if you have a clean out for your sewer line you can just open the clean pout you can put the dump hose on and turn the valve on once a week easy enough. I lived in one with 5 children my husband myself on the river banks no running water or power available. That was not that much fun, you don't need to hook it up to sewer just have a clean out so you can dump the holding tanks.

Composting toilets and heat tape for the water. You would also have to make sure that the trailer is very well insulated from the roof to the floor. Tiny home would be better since they are better insulated and built better, but can be more expensive.

My family and I live in a tiny house. Our son is 6 but plan on getting him his own small tiny house when he gets older or fixing up an old RV. Being on the coast of NC for winter (lows of about 30), we did fine. We have spray foam insulation and having lofts they were always warm. I remember even in the 40's we would have our windows open because it was so hot up there. As for the pipes freezing you need to insulate the pipes. They have little pipe coverings you can get from Lowe's or probably from any home store. The toilet comes down to what you want, so many options out there but we just use a bucket and dispose of the waste in a compost.

I know this is an earlier video. It is January of 2017 now and we are currently living in our RV in New Hampshire! Yes New Hampshire. Yes it is cold up here. This is our first year and there was a earning curve. We have hay bales all around the base of the camper. We are at 31 ft with a slide out. The heater does a good job keeping us warm. The hardest part is keeping all of the pipes warm enough to work. We used a heated hose insulated with insulation and plastic wrap to keep it dry. Our fresh water has never froze and it has gotten well below freezing, even below zero. The pink winterization stuff is your best friend. If you got a portable toilet they could bring it into your house and dump it in your toilet. The cassette with the "crap" in it detaches. As far as grey water there are many times laws saying you can NOT dump in on the ground. They do make grey tanks to put the grey water in, but again it could freeze. They make all kinds of heat pads for tanks and heat tape for the pipe that are outside. We found out by trial and error that we needed to put heat tape on all pipes and all drainage pipes. We have not frozen any pipes since we did that. It is a lot of work. Oh and don't forget they would have to keep the roof clean. So here are some belated ideas.

I live in a 26' travel trailer. I've gone through one winter so far. I got a heated hose for the incoming water. That was around $100. from Camping World. It has an electric cord wrapped around it, and is insulated on the outside. It plugs into the outside socket. But if you were running an extension cord from someone's house, then it would plug into one of those. It did work and kept my water from freezing. But I still had a problem with the lines freezing under the trailer. If I go through another winter in the trailer, I'll put thick white-boards all around the underside of the trailer. I was told that helps. The toilet was ok as long as the incoming water wasn't frozen. You could always have a camping toilet there for emergencies (bucket with toilet seat).Hope that helped some.

You need a trailer with a winter package so the water doesn't freeze. A winter package means it is better insulated and the tanks stay heated because the heating also heats the compartments below. You also have the wrap the water hose with foil, heat tape, and foam wrap. And as far as the sewage, if you live in the country you can put in a septic and run the pipes to each trailer, and the hose from the trailer needs to be sloped a lot, just get a large septic. Also putting up skirting around the bottom of the trailer.

If you have winter weather, it will need to be winterized. So have a composting toilet and an electric heater. You couldn't use water in the water pipes. You would have to haul drinking water and shower elsewhere.

My dad and mom live in a camper now a 5th wheel their built a little box around where the water connects and have heat trace wires wrapped around it and a heat lamp so water does not freeze but for the sewer he uses one of those blue tanks to empty to empty it into and then he pulls it behind the lawn mower up to my brothers and empties it into the sewer over flow pipe that sticks out above ground or whatever that is called

I would love to live in an RV. Three kids and all. ( I’m raising grandchildren ages 2 to 7). We do have a permanent campsite at a campground and spend as much time as we can there. Most of our time is spent outdoors. I have also considered setting up my daughter in a camper. I’ve seen them as low as 2,700. Water. It’s as simple as a hose and it would help to have a septic tank for sewage. But can drain to a specially made tank that’s on wheels

I've been looking into tiny houses for about 2 years now. You'd wanna look up compost toilets and that will explain everything. I've never done it but from everyone I've ever heard talk about it it's less smelly and pretty easy to deal with.

PS you're gonna wanna do a tiny house and not a RV. the difference is RVs typically have thinner walls so it would be a ton colder in the winter. For tiny houses the walls are a lot thicker and more insulated. You can build a tiny house for about 20 thousand if you use used supplies. and for info on composting toilets check this out. humanurehandbook.com/humanure_toilet.html

Buying land and having tiny houses is a Great idea. Obviously they are smart enough to look into details on how to go about all the laws. A tiny house is their own personal space, mindset wise and in general. No comparison on having a room with your parents.

Composting toilet would be best. Nature's Head would the best bet. It separates solids from solids. They could use sawdust or peat moss to layer the solids, they could dump the liquid down the house toilet. You could dump the solids into a composting bag and place in the green bin. A hole could be dug in the yard and the solids placed there, just throw some dirt on top. Allow it to get to a level where you can plant a tree or bush. Just a suggestion.

Our Mother in law lives on our property and stays in a camper... The septic is tied into ours and it was difficult to find the pipe. Thankfully we have a friend that's a plumber he came over and used the camera and my husband finally found it. We also run water straight in with a hose because the tank had a leak. So far it's going well and has been affordable for her. This will be her first winter and she may stay the most difficult part of winter in Florida with family. It's a wait and see type of thing. We are saving to purchase land where a few of our children and Mom in law can have a tiny house build. In the meantime she is doing this to save money. Hope that helps. Please feel free to ask any questions and good luck!

Research a luggable loo and a book about humanure composting. This will answer some questions. Have you considered a garden shed on a pallet? You can insulate it as necessary. If you are running electric to them you can plug in heat tape on the water lines. Also look into a catalytic heater or a extra small wood stove.

the problem will be you need a septic tank so you could run the toilet straight threw the fill line other wise you would have to empty the black water tank at a dump facility. doing composting toilets is like the cat litter thing or saw dust. you put the waste in a compost pile add saw dust and use it on the fruit trees or trees you dont eat from. then a far as pipes you have to wrap them and winterize under the trailer itself. I hope that kind of helps

your thinking of a 5th wheel.. yes it can work. as far as living full time it is usually allowed to camp on your own property for 6 months a year. However going towards Hartsel Park county they are all living in rv's. I dont think they are doing it only 6 months either..

Inconvenient driving campers to dump centers. You needed an old fashioned outhouse. A country family I knew, back in the 70's, kept theirs in operation long after getting an indoor toilet. They strung an electric line from the house to the outhouse. They turned on the light switch from the main house, which switched on both a light and a space heater in the outhouse. I bet your kids would have loved that. Of course, if you live in some areas with strict zoning laws, they may not permit it.

There is a young couple on You Tube that did that very thing, and what they accomplished has been amazing. I saw a bunch of their videos a few months ago-I am so sorry, I did t save them so I cannot provide a link. I believe they were out West somewhere-maybe even Colorado-and they put up this structure to cover their RV and even made a great living room with a wood burning stove for almost no money at all. They put out the word that they were looking for free materials, and they pretty much got everything they needed for totally free. They did have to provide labor by taking down someone's small barn or large shed, but then all those materials they got for free. It was absolutely amazing! I think that being exposed to the elements in just an RV without another structure to provide protection and an additional source of warmth is not a good idea. I just don't think they are designed for cold winters.

The problem is RVs do not have the proper insulation to be sufficient for winter. Tiny Houses can be built to the appropriate R factor. But, building a tiny house, are about $30,000 to build. You can build cheaper, but for those weather conditions you will definitely need the properly insulated windows too! Composting toilet the bucket would work, but you need to cover each deposit with sawdust. A 5 gal bucket is cheap, with a toilet seat on top with lid. You need a designated place in your yard to dump the bucket a couple of times a week. there are many youtube channels that show these options.
