there are spots in nothern Germany, like in Ganderkesee near Bremen, which celebrate Fasching "Carnival" pretty big and hard. 80.000 - 100.000 people are celebrating on carnival saturday with up to 80-100 so called "carnival-trains". Damme is a hotspot too. Keep up your good work and i wish you both the best. :)

You really did a great job catching the spirit of karneval. I know from my husband that it can be a bit overwhelming and uncomfortable when experiencing it for the first time, with all the tipsy people being so lovey dovey with everyone and invading your personal space but you did a great job going with the flow.
@RodrigoBorgia5 жыл бұрын
well, that "personal space" is something other cultures are not comfortable with (especially Asian). In opposite south-european: here you don´t have any private space. And, thankfully, it is changing in Germany too. south not so much, but Cologne, the "Ruhrgebiet" etc. are quite open and extroverted.

What you see at 3:39 are the old uniforms of the people who used to work with steel. Nordhreinwestfalen and especially cities like Solingen (a few minutes from Köln) are famous for their industries all over the world. The most famous knives and scissors comes from Solingen. The Solinger "Schlieper" (which is a dialect word for "Schleifer" = "Polisher"or "Grinder") used to wear these exact uniforms to work: A big black hat, a blue shirt and a red tie around their neck.. Since western Germany and especially NRW were greatly shaped by the steal industry, what you witnessed there was a homage to the old times and a representation of typical western tradition and culture. Fun fact: The equivalent to the people in the Schlieper uniform was the "Lewerfrau" who used to wear a bucket filled with to the brim with heavy steal on her head (!) and carried it all by herself across the city (and beware, cities used to be more like a sampling of villages with lots of forests and uneven grounds, so the delivery was no piece of cake.). The bucket with steal was so heavy that someone had to lift it onto her head, and also she was not able to put it down without help.

Thanks Henrik! We found a good spot on Monday and waited there for almost two hours for the parade to start, but it started dumping rain on us. We had to drive back to Bavaria that day, so we didn't get to see it.

This is very sad! The best part is the parade, but for 2021 you can find a livestream at WDR.tv. This is a local tv-station in Cologne. Did you saw it in the city? Its near by the Dom. If you both ever come back by the time of Karneval , you can go to the pub The Conkordian, its a nice place with nice people and the most speaks english. We visit it always when we are in Cologne. I have to say that we live nearby. I hope you both are safe and healthy! 😘🤗

Love this video ^^ nice cut. But LuL most tourists dont realize that karneval is mostly at the time when the parade ´´karnevals(um)zug´´ are in the differrent citys at different times over the week or in the indoor sessions ´´karnevalssitzung´´/´´Rosenmontagssitzun``/``Weiberfastnach´´ .... ok Kindergarten + schools + pubs do it too^^ all the stuff the tourist mostly find is the party around it :-)

Make sure to check out the "schwäbisch-alemannische Fastnacht" next year. Cologne Karneval is just the Most famous one. There are different kinds of carnivals in Germany. The Most famous parade in Baden-Württemberg Takes place in The City of "Rottweil". Its called "Rottweiler Narrensprung"

Hello! Thanks for the video ☺️ I am going to Köln for carnival this year and I am deciding how many days to be there for. Is Rosenmontag the biggest party day? Is it a good idea to be there for longer? Thanks!
@sc0ttishlass4 жыл бұрын
Make it an extended weekend. Come on Friday or Saturday. On Sunday there are the 'Veedelszöch' which are little parades in the various districts of the city, mostly of small clubs and schools. Monday is the big event Rosenmontagszug. Ask at the tourist information where the parade moves through the city to find a good view point. little language guide: Kölle Alaaf - Saying hello during Carnival in Cologne (and only in Cologne!!) Bützche - little kiss (usually o the cheek) Blömche - flowers (usually a small bouquet thrown by the parade folks) Kamelle - small candy Kölsch - the typical type of beer in cologne Have fun and Helau and Alaaf from the Rhineland.

Small correction: You said the main Karneval week lasts from the last Thursday in February until Ash Wednesday, but the date of the week is actually tied to Easter. Ash Wednesday is always 40 days before Easter because those 40 days are lent time. So the Karneval week can sometimes be in January or March
@Yora215 жыл бұрын
Carnival in Southeast Germany is actually an ancient Roman holiday. And after 1500 years, it's still mostly a thing in the areas that were colonized by the Romans. That's actually where the name "Cologne" comes from.

The hot days of carnival don’t start always on the last days on Thursday in February. It depends when the Easter days are. Easter Sunday is always on the first sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring march the 21th. From that date count approximately 40 days backwards to Symbol the 40 days Jesus stayed in the desert to fast. These year the main carnival starts on Thursday the 20th february and lasts till Tuesday the 25th February. The first full moon after spring starts on the calendar is on April the 8th and Easter Sunday is on April the 12th

Since they're all acting this crazy way for some days of the year, you know they've got the ability to do so, the whatever that causes this inside them. Allemannische Fastnacht started hundrets (thousands) of years ago. it was celebrated to scare away the ghosts of winter. therefor the scary masky and rituals. whatever, check it out. stay in FREIBURG, my hometown. numerous times voted best City to live in in Germany (or where most Germans would wanna live...something like that). Of Course, like myself, it used to be prettier. But still No1 somehow. very well produced Videos b.t.w.
