Is it worth it to live in NYC? Today we are talking all about life in New York City: Expectations vs reality. We will cover the realistic cost of living, housing challenges, roommate horror stories, things to do in NYC, NYC tips, and more things I wish I had known before moving here. New York City has its pros and cons but depending on your goals, it is definitely worth the move. Personally, I am happy with my move. There were some things that required adjusting. I am still on the fence about if I will live here long term. But again, happy to say I am living in one of my dream cities.

I think the idea that you need to make at least $100,000 a year to live comfortably in NYC is a huge misconception. I’m single, no kids, live alone in a nice apartment in a highly sought after neighborhood and don’t and have never made 6 figures. I would say that I live pretty comfortably. Sounds cliche, but I think it’s truly about living within your means. I think that the single most important factor in living in New York City is choosing a place to live that is affordable. For example, don’t pick the upper east side when you truly have a Woodside, Queens budget ( still a nice neighborhood by the way). I know a lot of people, especially people who come to live here from out of state (not you) who fall into the trap of “I must live in this upper crust neighborhood I can’t afford because people said these neighborhoods are the best or I read about them on a hipster blog somewhere”. There are a lot of great neighborhoods here that are off the beaten path.

How about around 50K annual gross income, single no kids, can I find a decent place with no roommates in nyc or should I wait until I earn more?

Thank you for sharing and lending insight to others that may come across this video ! I agree that is why I captioned that most New Yorkers and others living here do not make this. Definitely should have verbally said that. I also made mention that it depends on how close you want to live to the city and your lifestyle over all. So yes moving and aspiring to those neighborhoods like soho, East village etc will definitely make things harder your not kidding. Lol @ upper east because I can think of 1-2 people who were delusional with housing costs. Everyone has a different definition of “comfortable” and I also should have verbally said that. What I require or you require when it comes to living and activities may look very different. But yes I do feel like housing has and will continue to be the real challenge. Was it always like this before 2020 ? Thank you for mentioning living within your means too. I think it can get tricky for someone moving here wanting to experience all of New York and balancing the expenses that come with New York(or a bigger city) than that of southern states/slower states. Things can add up. And that was mostly one of my points, the more you make the better it is for you. Or be willing to adjust a little depending on where you are moving from.

Lots of good advice in here but I need to counter point one small thing: The L train literally runs every 3-5 minutes on weekdays and is one of the most reliable lines in the city! It is a mess when it's delayed because there aren't many alternative routes back to BK from Manhattan but I personally this experience only a few times year and I ride the L almost everyday.

You know what your right. Now that I live in Manhattan, and have experienced other lines, the few delays I did experience were nothing! Also it is normal for train maintenance to happen periodically which will reroute you. I think the combinations happening in a short period of time threw me off. But thanks for weighing in.

Thanks for watching and congrats on your move ! 🎉 That’s a bit outside of Manhattan, so you might not be in all the craziness unless you’re commuting for work or planning on visiting often.

Thanks for adding. I can see that, especially if your someone wanting to live directly in the heart of the city and someone wanting to have the flexibility to experience eating out or going to events often. Also if you don’t want roommates or have other expenses (like a car etc), the more you make the easier it will be for you. But it all comes down to lifestyle and personal choices. You can maneuver, budget and still have a good time here but it all depends.

Most people don't make a lot of money in New York city. If people are looking for quality apartments, the Realtors and the landlords won't let them in unless they make 40 times the rent. Even if those people are willing to pay.

Hey i have been thinking of moving to a new state im 21 im undocumented i was brought to this country at the age of 1 and due to a toxic family situation i want to leave to a new state. I just wanted to ask what i should do i currently work as a mower at a landscaping company and im worried that if i move i wouldn’t be able to find a job and a place to live because i would need to get a new state id and register my car. And some places require a living adress to get hired.
