As I am still too young to look into retirement, but never too early not to talk about it. Yes, I like melted pot culture there, food is awesome and inexpensive. And Malaysia is kindly welcome expats, offering MM2H visa ( Malaysia My 2nd Home Visa) Unlike Thailand in recent years. Expats are leaving Thailand due to many reasons.

Thank you Nigel, I am happy with your nice presentation but it is missing the required information on how you got where you are...the question is how much money did you and your wife have to put up? The information I have looked at it implies the offer is only available for people of comfortable means, not for low-cost applicants with a basic pension. Are couples processed as a couple or as individuals? Does it cost less as a couple...lots of questions need answers.
@davidwalden2887

Year 2012 was my first trip to Thailand and behold I met that nice man JC. The Australian Aged Pension (AAP) was very good then related to the Thai Baht, it was Bt31 or US $105 (65 cents today) If you apply that figure and compare it to the AAP as it was in 2012 it was equal to equal to Bt752,320, (2012) just short of getting a retirement visa, today it is equal to Bt497,502...to get a retirement visa in Thailand. In 2012 when you almost had enough to get one just from just the pension alone (AAP). Embassies then were quite happy to give you a stat dec. for the Bt800,000 because it was near the required amount anyway. Today you need 1.5 times that amount approximate savings to get a retirement visa plus insurance and you can only spend half of your Bt800,000 to live on for that 12 months period for the retirement visa. Evan Blind Freedy knows that is just no good. Aussie pensioners are better off staying home in Australia or going to the Philippines or Cambodia. Also, Malaysia with its free 90-day tourist visas can be turned into a long term residency provided you leave the country now and then for a while on a 30-day free Thai tourist visa. Go to Thailand would do the trick or go to the Philippines or Cambodia short stay or maybe forever that would work?. Perhaps you may not return often to Malaysia or Thailand and still live comfortably on your Australian Pension and remain there. Thailand is now RS for retirees it has gone past its use-by date...sorry was good but NBG now. (no bloody good)

I'm a 78y/o Aussie and still quite fit, I do have the funds to get an MM2h visa but I'm unlikely to spend the Aus $4400 monthly pension as required as a single older man to get one. I would have to cash in much of my Australian Bank managed pension fund to put up the required capital payment which has returned around 10% dividends and capital gains for the last 10 years to get maybe 1% interest in a Malaysia Bank (maybe none) if I go that way instead of the Aus $4400 pension. That would cost me at least Aus$12,000 a year lost dividends on my pension investment fund (not small for a pensioner, I could buy a small car for that each year) or about 33,000 rgt or as much as my food and lodging expenses would be for a year in Penang. I don't spend this much in Australia and live quite comfortably, I do own a house as well in Australia. It seems if you default after receiving your MM2H visa by not having the Aus$4400 a month banked your MM2H visa could lapse or be suspended. (it's in the fine print). I have perused the MM2H requirements extensively. I have spent a lot of time in Thailand not permanent but about 50/50 in Cha-am Thailand. Sometimes on a Thai retirement visa (which I get in Australia using my pension surrender value to qualify, no actual money required, yes), or on a Thai 90-day Tourist visa, 90-day tourist visas these you can only get in your home country, not in Thailand. I have never had a bank account in Thailand and never will. It's all now a bit complicated for 78 y/o to live in Thailand with all the new requirements, almost impossible to get medical insurance nowadays for my age, so a Thai Retirement 1-year visa is very complicated even if you have the required funds. I don't like to put money in a bank other than an Australian Bank (Govt guaranteed). I do not need a lot more than maybe Aus $1,200 p/m, to live comfortably in Malaysia in a rental studio in Penang in a one B/R apartment together with food. I can cook but do like to eat out often. Not a big drinker but I know that a bottle of Thai Samsung Rum costs about Aus $12 in Thailand, about Aus$38 in Australia and more in Malaysia perhaps Aus $45 (outrageous tax, tax, tax), perhaps the Muslum influence. I have been to Penang and love it, it is very cheap and convenient to travel from Perth to KL/Penang/return. I'd like to spend time there and flit to and from Perth Australia to Penang on a regular basis but not really permanent. Australia will always be my permanent home. There does seem to be some restriction of using Malaysia 90 day tourist visas which would suit me as I would be an on/off resident? Maybe short trips to Thailand or the Philippines or back to Aus and return to Malaysia for another 3 months. I suspect that some people who live in Malaysia do things this way. Of all the comments on these pages, they seem to avoid alcohol cost discussions...like I say I'm not a big drinker, yes as a retiree maybe 2/3/4 drinks a day but not always. My doctor says that's OK, good for me, 5/6 drinks not so good? I walk 6km or more each morning, have done for 43 years, still the same pace, no trouble. What else can I spend my comfortable pension on? I'm a bit old to chase the ladies (but I'll have a go). To spend my leftover Aus $3000 per month I need about 3 girlfriends? or maybe more? (please laugh! loud!)... any suggestions?

@trend trend It's a lot cheaper for overseas visitors as out dollar has dropped by 37%, It got to 31.5 Bht in 2012(bt20.5 today) and US 104 cents. Today 65 cents (as at 3rd March 2020) have a nice day.
