Just arrived in Portugal a few days ago (my second visit), and one thing that I noticed both times is how often Portuguese people seem apologetic when they don't speak English well, and I always reassure them. I mean, I'm in their country. It should be more on me to learn Portuguese than on them to learn English. Lack of central heating has been an adjustment, for sure. I'm so cold. Otherwise, I'm so glad that I decided to come back here for another long stay. (I'll be here for at least a month, possibly three.) I feel so comfortable and relaxed in this culture.

I'm native portuguese, I lived here all my life, I've lived in several houses and never have I heard anything about people entering someone's houses to check the meters. That must be something specific to some parts of the country or some houses (probably some old renovated houses). My meters have always been outside the house, and it's me who checks them myself and deliver the reading to the provider via their website. They only cross check my reading (outside) once in a while.

Here’s my list of 10 differences after 2 visits: 1. Milk in PT (and much of Europe) is not refrigerated in grocery stores 2. Fruits in PT (if not imported) tastes better 3. Less use of plastics for throw-away items; more use of wood/paper products 4. Can’t put my finger on it (since no one explained it to me) but recycling process is definitely different 🤷 5. Refrigerators are generally smaller in PT 6. Clothes dryers are either non-existent or smaller (and don’t work very well) 7. Salads are not served at the beginning of a meal in PT (and much of Europe) 👍🏻 8. Prices include tax - no guessing or calculations needed 9. Overall less use of credit/debit cards in PT 10. Soccer/football and cycling are bigger sporting events (proportionally) in PT vs US

The only thing I’ve learned about EU recycling is with glass. A friend works for the American wine giant Gallo’s Glass division. I mentioned several years ago about how thin bottles are compared to 70s, 80s glass. He learned after traveling to Europe with one of the owners (buying wood barrels from Croatia or wherever) that it is because they limit the amount of energy used in recycling glass there.

You guys only focus on the cost of living. But Kristin's video isn't all about the cost of living between Portugal and the US, it's also about the dryer, the size of the cars, the breakfast habits, AC unit vs central air, utility people coming to check the meter...I'm just highlighting that many of the differences Kristin points out between the US and Portugal are simply differences between the US and Europe. That's all.

In Portugal usually a gas inspection is made whenever there is a new rental contract and is made by an independent inspector (not by gas provider)! A few years ago markets charge plastic bags bacause there are a ecological tax over it, so people started to reuse now "rafia" stronger bags! A expresso hot coffee at the and of our meal is a national tradition!! :) I would say that here is no widespread taste for donuts, just a minority perhaps because we have great pastries tradition from previous centuries!!

One of my favorite moments is Portugal. I was in one of those local mom and pop restaurants, you know the ones that are only open for one meal. And the waiter was so excited that his soccer team scored there goal he ran outside screaming. He was great. So at the end of the night, I tipped him like 20% of my meal which was like €5. The guy was so excited from the tip that he offered me the scarf of his soccer team. Of course I couldn't accept such a generous gift for what I expect is a normal tip. Lisbon is amazing

That rule about the eggs is not only in Portugal, it's in all of EU. It's a EU regulation that eggs should not be bleached (like they are in US) because eggs have a natural protective coating against bacteria that is destroyed if you wash or bleach them. So, if you do remove that coating, yes, you do need to put them in cold. Otherwise, you don't. The EU way is the more biological way of doing this.

Clarification on the average cost of living in the USA @ 5:00: in Nov of 2022 the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that $5,577 is the average monthly expense for an American household (defined as a single, couple, or family). COL varies by many factors, including location, housing, and more.

Kristin, you really need to look into the quality of the water, chemicals in agriculture, and the environmental toxins of the place you wish to live. We know the tap water in European countries is unsafe for human consumption. Would it not stand to reason the water used to grow crops is the same? Also, where do you think the human waste goes in places where people are stacked on top of one another? Think about it.
@manuelrichard4097
@manuelrichard4097 Жыл бұрын
@@FidgetyGuy I don't know if I understood you, but in Europe you can drink tap water. Who has told you otherwise? Who told you that in Europe people live crowded together? Or where does that idea about the water used to irrigate crops come from???????? I assume you have not been to Europe. It's not about money, it's about a different lifestyle. We pay taxes to the government (which in fact is the representation of all of us) and this serves to provide us with health, schools, universities, roads, public transport... etc... etc... and the best without go to bankruptcy, especially when it comes to healthcare and college.

@@FidgetyGuy There are some pretty weird things about water: France grows oysters in effluent, then flushes their intestines under controlled conditions!!! But where did you get your information from? A Texas FRACKING company?
@FidgetyGuy
@FidgetyGuy Жыл бұрын
@@thedwightguy There is plenty of published research on the subject. In the United States every municipal water utility publishes tested samples. Also, the Environmental Working Group has a tap water database that you can search. I'm not sure why you would mention a Texas fracking company? However, fracking is bad for the water supply, not because of the process, but because of the toxic chemicals used in the process.

Nobody enters my house, for at least 30 years, to check the meter. Nowadays every house has or a ouside meter or a digital one. At most they ring the bell to enter the building an check the meter inside the stairs (not inside the home) and you don't need to be present. And, also, if you don't have a digital meter you can send the information by email or online.

Kristin, I think there is one HUGE detail you left out. While the prices may seem cheap to us Americans in comparison IF, IF, IF you live in Portugal and still work for U.S dollars, or even Pounds, for the average Portuguese, those prices may be high if they are making the minimum wage there. Southern Europe, which includes Portugal, is "poorer" than Northern Europe. The 2008 recession was a blood bath for Portugal and I believe 400,000 Portuguese fled the country for better pay elsewhere. In Portugal, the minimum wage is $9.00 or thereabout, so if you live there and work for a U.S company making $16, $21, $35, $75 an hour, as that person, you are eons ahead in affording to live there compared to the average Portuguese. That single fact has been a blessing and curse to the local population as there are people coming in who can afford an extra $500, $1,000 thrown on to rent, but the local population cannot keep up. Kristin, like me, you live(d) in South Florida. My rent went up $600 in two years after New Yorkers with money fled to the state. Heck, when I moved down to Broward County in 2020, some new homes were being built behind my apartment complex, priced at starting at $400k. Those same homes went up to $700k in 1.5 years. That's what is going on in Portugal now. Affordable to us, not to the local population. That said, my wife and I plan to move to Madeira and our reason is unique as to why. Would really surprise you. Tell me if you want to hear more. :-)

Great and very informative video, Kristin! One difference I experienced in Italy and I heard it was even greater in Portugal, is that dinner starts very late compared to the U.S. In northern Italy (Verona), if you arrive for dinner at 7:00 p.m., they may only just be starting to be ready to serve dinner. No customers were in the restaurant at that time, except us! I've heard that in Portugal, dinner may not start until 8:00 p.m. There is no early-bird dinner in these countries. 🙂 Has anyone else had this experience?

It is the same in Spain 22 working days that have to make a total of 30 days a year plus 14 holidays a year. In France 30 working days a year plus 10 public holidays. 24 working days in Germany and so on. Always mandatory. And really important paternity (father/motherhood) leave is 16 weeks for both parents. Mandatory, no excuses, no arrangements. The first 6 weeks uninterrupted, the rest can be taken part-time. This is in Spain and very similar in other countries.

1:04... Fresh squeezed is the way to go. Most Americans don't realize that ALL OJ sold in stores (no matter what the label says) is anything but fresh squeezed. To get the scent back in the juice they put in Ethyl Butyrate... and because of some technicality with the FDA, they don't have to list that chemical on the label of the container. So if you want fresh squeezed, Portugal is doing it the right way.

I noticed that Europe (excluding Great Britain) doesn’t do breakfast very well. Just a pastry and coffee versus the more substantial American breakfast Kristen has shown. But America definitely has a limited breakfast menu to the point that restaurants serving breakfast all day is unusual and special. Here in Thailand there are maybe only 2-3 items you will only find in the morning but otherwise the whole menu is available all day. I had grilled chicken for breakfast the other day in the local fresh market.

Hi there. I am in the process of moving to Lisbon with my wife. She is going as a digital nomad and I can accompany her as her spouse. We are just waiting for our visas to come through. My wife has lived and worked in Lisbon before for a few years and her daughter lives and works in Lisbon. We have a lovely rental apartment waiting for us in Alcantara, about 5 mins walk from the river. We arranged all our utilities and internet/cable online, giving our own meter readings. What I would say is rental prices are shooting up and if anyone is thinking of emigrating to Portugal, do it now. We are from the UK and our cost of living will be at least 30/40% lower than the UK at the moment. Food and utilities are half the price and there's no council tax or heating costs to worry about. We won't need a car as public transport is so cheap. If you wanted to live in a more rural area, rentals are a lot cheaper but you may need a car to get around. Oh, and it's a lot warmer.

@@TravelingwithKristin The eggs are outside the refrigerator because the US has different egg processing requirements than most of the rest of the world. We’ve been living in the Algarve for over a year and are currently house hunting on the island of Madeira. Both are lovely and have very different pros / cons. The biggest con for moving to Madeira is that biking isn’t popular here and you can’t go very far because you can’t bike thru the numerous tunnels. After traveling thru Europe in our camper since 2017 (minus staying put in Germany during the pandemic) ~ I’ve grown very attached to my bike which is my primary transportation. The Algarve has to convenient train that runs from Lagos in the west to VRS on the border with Spain. Well, it seems MOST of Europe (and the former Eastern bloc) never lost their food supply chain. We in Canada and the USA have allowed a few billionaires (Pattison and Weston) to make sure no one can get into the game. Lettuce for 4 bucks? How about TODAY it's more like 6 going to 7 or more in Canada. Eggs?? last year around 4 or 5, now ramping up to 10 (and those are NOT ORGANICE OR FREE RANGE). This hurts. Potatoes that are NOT gourmet packaged? Ten bucks a bag, were 4 last year. OUCH in Canada.

I think your take on the meter readers is not quite on spot. The major difference may be that our meters are outside, so they don't have to come in to read them. But regardless of where you are in the world the meters still have to be read. How on earth else would they know what usage to bill you for? And you constantly compared $ for living expenses with euros. Why not translate all the euro amounts into dollars so they give some actual basis for comparison? Amateur effort and much less than useful.
