How good it is to hear someone from another country, especially one so huge and beautiful as the US, to talk about ours in such a nice way. Makes me feel so proud and also to apreciate it so much more. Sometimes we take things for granted. So thanks, Patty. You're very sweet. Have a good time in Panama! Cheers! 🇵🇦🤗🇺🇲

@@Pattybluehayes Yeah much of Panama's charm lies outside the city. Although the city still has some really great places(Cinta Costera, Amador, Parque Omar,..etc). But as my wife was born and raised here, just like her parents, grandparents, great parents and so on, I'll probably be here in P.C. for good😂. We still get out to Gorgona about 5 times a year(and other places as well), just to decompress and enjoy the countryside ......Thank you for your excellent content Patty🙌

Facts to straighten: the Chinese came a lot earlier with the construction of the railway. The Afro-Caribbean came for both the railway and the canal but mainly the canal (also Greeks, Spanish, Indians, Irish and many others). The Afro-colonials were brought by the Spanish as slaves. very enjoyable to just sit and listen to you talk while viewing some mixed in scenes of your travels in the country. #1 benefit of living in Latin America for me is greater levels of freedom and less government intrusion into your life and finances. although, the level of security when you arrive at the airport is the strictest I have ever experienced. as someone who only visited Panama for 1 month as a tourist I didnt find it that cheap. I stayed in a combination of hotels and Air BNB's and they averaged $100 a night... contrast that with where I am staying in Mexico right now at $23 a night. rented a car for a week and that was $400. I loved the ability to be able to go different places on my own but still thats a significant amount of money when you think that most of the time the car is just parked where you are staying. anyways, I could stay in Mexico for about 4 months for what I paid for 1 month in Panama. so I think I'll just be an occasional tourist... definitely need to come back to experience Boquete and Volcan. I like the cooler temps!

I think you can definitely find places for under $50 a night in Panama, maybe not in the city or high expat focused areas, but my friends have The Magma Chamber on Airbnb in El Valle and it’s budget friendly 😊 I never noticed the security being all that strict. I am surprised the canal is so easily accessible 🤔

@@Pattybluehayes security might have been stricter when I was there as it was at the end of the protests. as far as the airport goes... the requirements to get into the country, even if they dont bother to check them like $500 cash and proff of exit flight. but the big thing for me was the digital fingerprinting. never ran into that before. and I talked to some Americans at the airport on the way out. for US citizens there is double and triple security checks before you board your flight. Casco Viejo was being patrolled by entire troops of police and military when I was there. Punta Chame had a police/military checkpoint to enter. Ive seen videos of toursist being pulled over in their rental vehicles and having to p[roduce all their ID, passports, rental papers for the vehicle etc. of course many Latin American countries have those kind of rules but none enforce it and do random checks to the level of Panama from what I have seen. and yes, if I stayed in the country longer I probably could have figured out cheaper ways to live, but the other thing for me as a Canadian is I lose 40% on the exchange rate. so the $500 cash I brought with me in case they asked at the airport cost me $700. much better when you can be on the right side of the exchange rates... anyways, I am glad I came there and now have a decent understanding of how things work. I always get nervous going to new countries but they always end up being more civilized and very similar to what I am used to.

Great information 👍🏾 Just a little correction. Most of the Chinese Immigrants came to build the Transatlantic Railroad during the California Gold Rush, and the French intent to construct the Canal. The Black Slaves that came with the European (mostly with the Spanish) is correct. Later you have the Blacks immigrants from the Caribbean countries and nations (West Indies) hired by the US for the Panama Canal Construction. And you are so right, Panama is a beautiful melting pot❤

Good to know about the earthquakes. I looked at some homes in Altos de Maria I saw some damage in homes I felt was from earthquake activity but didn't know how big of a problem it is there. However I did learn some expats have built homes in Altos to withstand some ground movement because of the area. I do like Altos but I think navigating that road will be an issue as I get older, so like you I'm considering El Valle if I can find a monthly rental there within budget to check it out. Hi Patty, Woody here. I just retired on Social Security and am searching for a suitable, budget friendly country to get residence. I really like the green that surrounds your house and that the temperature is mild and not oppressively hot, but I primarilly need infrastructure to get to food at a reasonable variety of low cost cafes, restaurants and grocery stores. Also high on priority is ease of public transportation since I will not have a car yet. To sum it all up, I am asking your opinion for where you think is a good city, or town for a "soft landing" (though it may be hot) there in Panama, for a start, to get my feet on the ground? I appreciate any recommendation you can give me.
@Pattybluehayes
@Pattybluehayes 2 ай бұрын
First, have you looked into the types of residency visas and talked with an attorney and have an idea of the expenses? Second, I’d suggest visiting a few different provinces/mountain/beach areas. The only way you’ll know what’s right for you is to have the experience of being here. You may decide you like a small town and take a 30 minute bus to a larger shopping area. Or you might decide you like a city, or the heat at the beach is tolerable. You’d want to stay out of heavily expat populated areas for more affordability.

Hello Patty I’m a 61 year old woman who is looking for a friend to get to know there I’m interesting in moving there, but I do not know anyone there to help me get around and to find out information about living situation there I’ll be 62 in December 2024 and I’m looking to retire. I’m wondering if you could help me in guiding me to which way to go, thank you

If you haven’t been to Panama, you might enjoy an organized relocation tour. You’ll meet other people and get all the information you need to make an informed decision. Start posting in the FB groups that expats use and learn about the different companies that do those types of tours. Best wishes on your next adventure 🌟

The worst idea is to choose the Wingo airport. The bridge to the city is at noon blocked, and the 2+2 lanes are all only open for the East direction. I have friends who use Wingo regularly. A NIGHTMARE to pick them up. You must use the only bridge open to the city, driving into the city (close by) turn around and drive back. With afternoon traffic, this adds 3-5 hours driving time to the airport. I’m sure that did cost me a lot of hair to agree to pick them up. And I always forgetting about the closures in the afternoon. I promise to pick them up and then…. OHHHH NOOO. Not that airport again! 😅 Stability in Politics???? There isn’t one party in Panama who got re-elected! Panamanians blame every politician to be corrupt! But every Panamanian is corrupt too! “If you pay cash…. It would be cheaper….” Nobody likes to do business correctly. Imagine one thing: Teachers blocking the only highway in Panama. For months! Not days! In every teachers contract is written that they lose their jobs if they demonstrate in work hours. Guess what? The teachers Union gives a fxxx about the contract! On top, demand payments as usual. And the ministry is paying. Now tell me. Who has the right to call politicians corrupt? The whole population of Panama is corrupt!

Oh my gosh 😮 That is so stressful. Throw in the vendor-in-the-road obstacle course, construction, potholes and dogs - and that’s a wrap.

So yo know. Greetings from Nueva Gorgona. And thank you. I wouldn’t like to live in El Valle even if someone offers me money. The road to go there is destroying every car!
