People say that prices are going up in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. Is that true? We're going to test it!
►Learn Spanish like us: www.rocketlanguages.com/spani...
Today we set out to feed ourselves for just $10 USD or, with the current exchange rate, 185 pesos. Can we do it? Or will we go hungry! We've been successful in every city so far, but with prices (supposedly) going up in Ajijic, Mexico maybe we'll fail for the first time! Find out!
As expats in México, we've done the $10 challenge in quite a few cities but this time we're trying it in Ajijic, Jalisco. If you're wondering how expensive it is in Mexico in 2018, watch this travel vlog to give you a better idea.
If you've been considering traveling to Mexico or a Mexico retirement, videos like this will help you budget for your time here. We're going to show you how you can travel on a budget and live in Mexico cheap - even in the more expensive cities like Ajijic. We're going to be eating cheap all day in this $10 challenge!
ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our KZfaq channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

1:30 Comida corrida is a two or three course meal which typically includes rice, soup and agua fresca or soda. The restaurants which offer comida corrida are usually known for being economical and fast.

Thanks Jonno! That's definitely not what this was then. It was just the one plate of food and no drink was included.
@gyro3341
@gyro3341 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe she understood your order wrong! Because, like Jonno said, they first bring you soup, or a "soupy" kind of meal, then rice, salad or even spagetthi in some places, and then the main course. All of this with endless agua fresca and tortillas.

I think you ordered off menu breakfast and she was confused. It's normally cheap and multi course as was mentioned. I don't think it was gringo price or anything, just lost in translation.

By the way it looked, it doesn't seem like a "comida corrida".. close, but not the same.. It's similar because when you go to a "fonda" (small restaurant) to eat "comida corrida", they would also have several pots ready with the "guisos" The difference comes in the way they are served.. "comida corrida" is always a 3 course meal (at least): 1. a liquid soup: it could be a small cup of chicken broth or some vegetables soup 2. some carbs: rice, beans or spaguetti 3. the main course: there you should pick one of the "guisos", can't have them all Also, it's not unusual that a restaurant does the same thing, but they usually call it "menú del día".. you could either choose something "a la carta", or go with the "menú del día". It's usually a one page written by hand.. or if they have a small slate (blackboard) they would write something like this: ** Menú del día ** Sopa de verduras / caldo de pollo (vegetables soup / chicken broth) ******** Arroz a la mexicana / spaguetti rojo (mexican rice / red spaguetti) ******** Pollo al estofado (chicken stew) Puntas de res (small chunks of beef.. similar to fajitas) Chicharrón en salsa You have to choose one item from each section: soup or broth then rice or pasta and finally your main dish. Some come with "agua fresca" and even coffee or tea.. but you should better ask upfront.. sometimes they could give you only one glass of "agua fresca", or even a small pitcher.. Would love to see you try one of this. Salu2

"Comida Corrida" mostly is at lunch time and it includes several small meals. The price is prefix and it is cheaper then "a la carta". It is cooked fresh in large quantity, so it is the fastes order you can get. Comida corrida's advantages are ...it is fast, it is cheaper, and it is cooked that same day. The bad side is that there is no way that you can have an special order on it. Maybe some restaurants may offer it, but mostly you gotta look for fondas (very small family restaurants). By experience I know that some people charge higher price for things in order to get some profit, they do it higher because they dont get to sell enough to cover cost, on the other hand other people charge less, but they sell more. Its like a vicious circle.... I bet you know this, specially in Mexico, you gotta look for busy restaurants or fondas. That means that either the food is very good or at least is cheaper then the rest.

You are really good tourist; I'm glad you guys don't ask for something outside of the menu or try to modify the plates; in my opinion I always try to tip even in those small places, maybe that tip it's the bus ticket for the daily commute and that can make a huge difference; keep up the great work cheers

Breakfast with handmade tortillas could raise the price because one handmade tortilla cost more than a machine tortilla. A kilo of machine tortilla cost around 13 pesos meanwhile a handmade could cost 40 or even 50 pesos depending on where you are.

Hi, it's not gringo price, it is more like "strangers price", this kind of places have their regular clients and charge about 10% more to people they don't know, it was a great price though, in Ciudad de México and most urban places, hand made tortillas are more expensive than places with tortillas from "tortillería or tortilladora" (tortilla machine), and hand made tortillas are considered a real treat

Omg. Comida corrida is a must in Mexico during lunch. Some places open at 3am in CDMX for taxi drivers. They are amazing. Traditionally started by family members out of the first floor of their home. Over time and popularity has turned them into thriving historic establishments all over Mexico. Maybe not for tourist. They can be confusing if you don't speak Spanish. But gotta love grandmas cooking. Some of my best meals have been in places like these. They get very down home. Enjoy and cheap!

This reminds me of a German tradition called "Besenwirthschaft", which roughly translates to "Broom Pub". People will hang a broom outside their house, usually adorned with colorful ribbons or balloons, to signal that they are operating such a "broom pub" and that means you can just walk into their private home, sit down in their kitchen or dining room and be served homemade food, almost as if you were part of the family, just that you have to pay like in a restaurant.

Tipping...well that's a good one. It varies EVERYWHERE in Mexico. Rule of thumb, if you see a tip jar for propinas then tip. Comida corrida is kinda like Mexico's idea of "fast food" as opposed to "comida callejera" which is street food. Unlike fast food though, comida corrida consists of what is basically a mexican home cooked meal that has, for the most part, been pre prepared and ready to eat almost as soon as you order. Its a popular option when you're looking for something quick but dont want to eat street food, and its also generally healthier than street food as well. It's also a good way to eat to experience what mexicans really eat on a daily basis. The dishes will change depending on the whim of the establishment owner and the region you're in. Even though there is a lot of overlap between the cooking of the different regions of México, there can also be very notable differences depending on the state you're in.

Where I was born and raised in New York, we did not have cookie-cutter homes. A lot is lost when development is not organic.

You know what's cool? Your $10 challenge made me wonder if I could do that in my city. I thought it was most likely impossible unless I bought total crap coffee and food... Which then made me smile because in México I know I can complete the challenge and have good food and drinks!! México for the win! ❤

It would've been so difficult in Phoenix! Just like you say, buying food that's garbage might get you through the day.
