The rich finance guy’s frustration is understandable, but the way he just stereotypes all of them as being meth addicts or burnouts is very telling of his attitude. He looks down at them from his ivory tower and doesn’t care where they go as long as they are out of his line of sight. Cares more about his property value than human beings.

As a former maid for a couple of these neighbors, I can assure you their money was inherited, not earned. No one in the neighborhood works hard or is even tired when they get home. Once home, they complain about the “entitled attitude” of the poor while drinking wine that costs more than a hotel room.

I'm from San Francisco. To give you more background here, the waterfront homes in Marin County (in the Tiburon area), are worth an average of $5M - $15M. The people who live there are not just rich or millionaires, they are wealthy beyond measure. As a San Francisco native who has watched my city price out generations of residents, it's almost comical to watch these people who live on the Marin County waterfront complain about anchor-outs. Now I could understand if the anchor-outs broke into their houses, stole from them, etc, but to get upset at their existence is honestly a mix of hilarious and infuriating

To describe the anchor outs the wealthy guy says “ they don’t want to spend money, pay rent or pay taxes”. He just described most wealthy people in America.

What's shocking is how concerned these home-owners appear to be with the "environmental impact" of the boats. As though companies they work for don't account for 99% of the pollution in the ocean. Those boats are literally a drop in the ocean when it comes to pollution and the real culprits are white collar.

In my country there are no problem with boats crashing into waterfront homes because we generally don't allow waterfront homes. The beaches for the most part belong to everyone and cannot be bought and built on.

Where else are people supposed to live? Because, when you think about it all of the people that service these million-dollar properties, Carpenters, HVAC technicians, electricians, roofers, restaurant workers, coffee shop Baristas, etc... do not make enough money to live anywhere near the area. If they want people to live on land, they need to make that a viable option first. They can't just order them to abandon their boats, only for them to become homeless on land and then go "there, much better. I fixed the problem."

I was homeless and not drugs. I lived in the woods by myself and my area was free of litter. I would say if you are living homeless at least keep your camp clean because those who make the homeless look bad. I had a job. I walked to work until I found a better life but I preserve the woods the way I found it when I left it and in between. I loved living in the woods by myself and was getting accustomed to it but I resisted the woods. People trash it and that’s the problem

I lived anchored out in Richardson bay there for a couple years. It should be a basic human right to be able to anchor. I finished high school while anchored out. I am now a home owner, outright. People on the hill in a 3 million dollar home telling me what to do was a horrible feeling. I never caused any grief to anyone, and often helped people in fancy boats when they had issues. Lawmakers need to think again before destroying communities. 90 percent of the people anchored out were functional good people.

It's amazing how concerned some people are about protecting the environment when poor people live on old boats. Large corporations can legally cause enormous environmental damage through oil drilling and fracking, and investors receive enormous profits. But the Bay Area is full of millionaires. They don't want to see poor people. Poverty has to be invisible.

Rich people making laws and thinking their way of life is secure because of all the money they have are delusional. Pushing the poor to the edge has consequences as history have shown.

Maritime law is different than law of the land. Also those waters aren’t owned by the town. It’s federal water. The 72 hour “rule” is an unconstitutional city ordinance that doesn’t have jurisdiction over the water

I heard that being an anchor-out is worse in Oakland/Alameda. Their are those who steal boats and the contents inside.

When a law is designed to only serve the rights of the wealthy and not uphold the rights and security’s of every man woman and child equally then it’s not law it’s purely a gateway to entitlement.

At the end when the man says, "there's no compassion around here", he is absolutely right. I grew up in North Bay and the lack of compassion is staggering. If we wanted to build a lot of housing to solve the homeless crisis, we would. Classic case of Marinites shutting everyone out except the ultra wealthy.

I went to school for boatbuilding. I would NOT recommend buying or living on a boat if you’re on a tight budget. Failure to do regular maintenance could end up with your house on the bottom of the bay. Remember folks, BOAT is an acronym for BUST OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND 😢

Great video but I think there was a missed opportunity to highlight how hard Marin County has fought new housing developments. They’re choosing to destroy the only home these people have but also prevent any new options from being built in the area. It’s appalling and the residents should be held accountable for their selfishness.

I moved out of the US 26 years ago. I'm right now sitting in my little house in the Philippines. As I watch this video, can't help but wonder if I'd stayed in the US, would I end up like one of these people? If I'm perfectly honest with myself, I can't think of a good scenario for my life had I stayed.

As someone who went to college in Marin this is extremely accurate. The wealth gap is massive. Marin is constantly at war with the poor. During my final year of college the city of San Rafael got rid of its homeless navigation center.

There is a bit more to this than is really covered. I live in SF, and I know a few people that do live on the water in a boat. One of my good friends is an Aerospace engineer and lives on his boat, has a Starlink for the internet and works from home. He stays here for 5-6 months of the year, then heads out to sail wherever the wind takes him the other 6 months of the year. He makes good money, but not enough to afford a SF home, instead, he roams the Arctic, travels the world, and etc. He has never had a problem, but his boat is maintained, it runs, and it is sea-worthy. It's like someone that lives in an RV full time just driving around the country, stopping off at RV parks, but it's a boat... no one has an issue with it. Then you have the other side of it, the streets you see with a line of older broken down RV's that aren't really RV's anymore, they'll never run, and are now just a tiny home and part of a homeless encampment. A lot of the boats they are talking about don't run, they aren't watertight anymore, and as we saw, they can take on water and sink or the anchor can break, and they are pushed into docks and stuff, because they simply don't run anymore, no way of avoiding objects or other boats should something happen, and then they cause damage, and of course, they don't carry any insurance in case that does happen, they aren't registered, etc. It sucks to lose a home, but, if you are going to live in a boat on the water, you need to keep it operational, and the reason these are scrapped and etc is because they aren't, and they have literally become a danger. . It's like any home, if you don't take care of it, and keep up with the maintenance, then it is going to get condemned and you are going to get booted out, most of these are condemned homes, they just happen to be on the water, and they are unfortunately beyond repair in most cases. Like I said, it is sad, but it is their fault, if they kept up with the maintenance, they would be all good, and it's not the money, I know a lot of people that love boats and would gladly help out others just for the fun of working on a boat. For whatever reason, they just let it go, and it went too far.

It's wild to me that we live in this massive country with these massive coastlines and people just insist upon living on THE most expensive part of said coastlines.

I lived in a community that was split into rich, middle class and poor. I remember being invited to a friends and their family was “going out on the yacht.” We didn’t go anywhere, just stayed tied to the dock. They pay 500 a month to have these boats “docked.” They never take them out, they don’t take trips, nothing. I was middle class and went fishing regularly. I remember asking where they went and the families and yacht owners would almost get angry or offended. Years they would pay to have boats in during the summer and out stored in the winter. What a wasted. Easily 200+ high end Luxury boats that only moved by the wake of charted fishing boats.

My wife and I lived in our sailboat there for a while. Met some amazing people with amazing stories. We were getting our boat ready to sail south. We were treated very different because we were anchor outs. The police threatened us. Everyone of the anchor outs were great though. We would hang out with them at the church or at the coffee shop. Many were working jobs and coming back to their boat. The county made it very difficult for everyone to live out there. Shut down all the docks except one. Over 100 boats and only 1 tiny dinghy dock. Fun. The harbormaster was not very liked. He got many boats destroyed. That’s what the county was paying him to do. Many lost their homes and lived in tents. Even kids. I know everyone that was interviewed. Amazing people! Miss this place so much. A strange balance between very rich and very poor.

When the dude whose boat got crushed and he goes and visits it and sees his grandmother’s photos, I started crying. How could they not even give these people at least a heads up about demolishing their boat, their home? Their possessions, possibly even living things on the boat like kids and pets. It’s possible they didn’t know that those living things were on the boat and could’ve killed them. This just shows how fucking heartless these rich people are. When that rich guy said he felt bad at the end, I saw right through his lies. You feel bad, yet you still continue to do this to them? You feel bad yet you don’t help them find their feet after what you’ve done? You feel bad yet you don’t solve the root problem that causes some of these people to live in these boats in the first places. You’d do anything to get them out of your sight as you sit in your ivory towers. You’re despicable.

That homeowner is a prime example of what Marin people are like. The homeless are an eyesore to them and if you don’t make 100,000,000+ a year you deserve to live at least an hours commute from their little paradise. I grew up there and it’s really a wonderful place but the people are so backwards and heartless that I had to get out as soon as I could.

As someone who lived aboard a sailboat from NYC and north up the coast-mind you a very pretty one that we kept in great shape and could just about blend in with the “yachts” of the upper class-the creative tactics we’ve encountered from cities, marinas, and parks to make sustainable and responsible living aboard impossible is really staggering. The liveaboard community is incredibly diverse, resourceful, and low impact-I’d take their company any day. But because we take nothing from and “contribute nothing” to the capitalist machine that funds most waterfronts, we’ve been recast as a nuisance. One more tragedy amongst many 🙄

Wow, the feels are hard on this one. I'm a brother who wouldn't know the first thing on what to do to live on a boat. The maintenance needed to keep it seaworthy. How to hunker down in storms. How to monitor the depth so I don't hit something and take on water. Hell, just keeping it fueled up and livable day to day. You'd need a special type of person to be able to do that life. And you reduce them down to meth heads and criminals? Crazy. Then to put them into a tent down next to the yard that literally destroys their home as the watch and listen? I live off the Richardson Bay. I live in a house. I was brought up here, been here since 1957. All the complaints about the anchor-outs are valid to different degrees. But that's not the end of the story. Many of these anchor-out folks have been in their water boat homes for 15 or more years. If there was a law against it, it was never enforced. I question the fairness of letting people live in an environment for that long and then, one day, to just declare their way of living is illegal, confiscating their water abodes, leaving them with absolutely nothing. It is not really practical to offer them "affordable" land homes because southern Marin is 100% built out. There is nowhere to build low income housing to give to each boat owner or family. I have a different and maybe more charitable idea- Go out to the anchor-outs and take a census of boats and boat owners/family. Grandfather them in for their lifetime or the boat's lifetime, which ever is shorter. If the owner/family leaves their boat or moves the boat to a new location, there is no coming back. A boat may be technically sold but no new tenant of a boat may be permitted to live on the boat. Over time this population will dwindle to the end. It has to, no body lives forever, and people do leave for another place. My wife asked, what about the boat sunk in the mud? She's not from the bay. Let me help here. That boat was not stuck in the mud! The photo was taken at low tide. Big deal! Go to the "legal" houseboats tied up, like the smarmy guy in the video. HIS houseboat gets "stuck" in the mud too a low tide, unless he's on pilings. Many of the "legal" moored houseboats are not on pilings and will also sit on the mud in low tides! That photo was provided to influence you without understanding life on tidal water. My idea results in no relocation problem, no wrecking of a person's living space, no rendering a person homeless, and a sure timeline to an end of anchor-outs. it's done with no animosity or pain to these independent folks whose only crime is living as lone solitary people on the bay. Lets give a little folks!
