For four years we were all captivated.
The rolling hills east of the Pennines were subjected to some of the best football in Europe, a tag usually reserved for the red rose empires of Anfield and Old Trafford.
The sleeping giant, birthed by the management of Don Revie and matured from its adolescence by Howard Wilkinson had been awaken by the youth under David O’Leary.
They tussled with the superstars of their time: Ferguson’s Manchester United and Wenger’s Arsenal back home before the Ballon d’Or winning stars of Rivaldo, Andriy Shevchenko and Luis Figo graced the hallowed turf of Elland Road.
They came so close to conquering it all, to planting another Leeds United flag of success into the turf.
Yet underneath the surface was a reckless and ruinous regime that threatened the very fabric of the club.
This is the story of Leeds United’s boom and bust at the turn of the Millennium, when West Yorkshire dare to live the dream and, in the end, flew a little too close to the sun.
