I have a brand new Fiat 500e for 1 month and I share my experience today after 2 weeks, plus 350 miles of driving, thanks to an EV subscription car company called ONTO

Kudos to you for experiencing firsthand the growing pains and social protocols of an electric daily. But it appears the infrastructure needs to catch up to the challenges of the most basic of needs; charging!

Quick tip, try and avoid rapid charging electric cars past 80%. They really ramp down their charging speeds and that last 20% can realistically can take double the time for the first 80%.

Thank you for sharing the tip here with rapid charging 👍

And don't forget: rapid charging ist Not good for the battery's SoH, because of faster degregation. 11kW with a wallbox ist the best way to keep the battery healthy

i have a 500e and i am very happy with that. it has all a older couple needs and more. sorry for your chargingb probl4ms, but thats nor the car, it´s the chargers idal charging is with a 11 kW wallbox. it is a good compromise because fast charging results ín fast degradation of the battery by the way some important fats: using full acceleration too often means a hard job for the battery and the same with permanent full speed. batteries do not like high currents as to it takes a lot of time to charge ove 80% because the car slows charging sown to save the battery. it is a physical fact; the fuller the battery the slower it can be charged. so 80 to 10 0%is the same time as charging fom 80 to 90. it is considered to be very unpolite to let others wait so long for your only few more percent more! and it is not good for the battery avoid under 20% and over 80% keep between that

My friend got a kona via onto 18 months ago and quite a few times she has had the similar issues with queuing for charging, chargers not working or the card not working with the charger. She has been really impressed with onto and the fact she doesn’t have to worry about the cost of charging in public charging stations. She unfortunately doesn’t have a home charger, so she solely uses public charging places (InstaVolt mainly). Last week I picked up my fiat 500e icon (with motability) i do have a home charger installed so I haven’t had the chance to use public stations yet - I am nervous of how much it will cost compared to petrol and after hearing about some of the difficulties with public charging, especially being a wheelchair user. My car is my legs so running out of battery is a big fear, so I wanted to say thank you for mentioning that the range is pretty true as I’ve been super nervous on trusting the estimated range - especially as the temps were minus 7c this past week. So far it’s a big change but I love the build quality of the 500e, i really like how it handles cornering and how much grunt it has. I’m still getting used to all the functions and setting up all the infotainment bits and the apps 🤓 I’m so glad you said that you drove it mostly in normal mode, as i to find the range mode very strange to drive… I haven’t dared using Sherpa mode yet. I suppose it’s something new to get used to 😬Could I be cheeky and ask if you notice the range being really effected by hill driving or is motorway driving more draining on the range? Thank you for doing this post you have definitely eased a few concerns with the switch to electric 😊

Thank you for sharing such a detailed comment and many congrats on picking up your Fiat 500e. For sure you will love the car and having a home charger really does take out a lot of the pain points which I found living with the car for a month. Charging cost wise it is very hard to tell due to the current climate but from reviewing this I did not notice too much difference between the cost of electric compared to a normal petrol car. Being a wheelchair user, I am very interested to share your experience to best help others as this is one thing I very much had in mind during the ownership, particularly charging in public, as the space issue does not seem adequate from my view compared to say a normal petrol station where you do tend to have a large amount of space. Yes I agree, normal mode is the way to go but certainly it is worth trying out the other modes to see how you get on. Range wise, yes on the hills it does deplete the battery more but if you are doing a return journey heading back down the hill evens this out. So lets say you use 20miles of range heading to a destination with more of a hill route, when heading back the car would only use 15miles so its just a balancing act. I really do appreciate your comment and would recommend checking out my other Fiat 500e videos. I also plan to restart my series called "Sam Talks Cars" in January 2023 where I go through my subscribers comments in a video to share. Lasts years playlist is here to give you a bit of an example: kzfaq.info/sun/PLApEm-9raRRp_vma-rrFhd6eCIw1rXC_N - Please do continue to share you experience and I wish you all the best for the rest of 2022 and beyond 👍

@@SamAustin Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease, I’ve already shared your fiat 500e posts to a friend 😄 that has just ordered her new motability car and Ive made sure to follow your channel so I can check out your previous posts.🙌🏻 That’s a really great point regarding returning journeys that help balance out the hill drain on the range, it’s a shame it doesn’t work that way on motorways 😆 The charging spaces access: You are right! That is going to become a big problem, as wheelchair users, we do need the larger parking bays so I can get my wheelchair alongside my drivers side to transfer so i can get to the charger and connect it to the car. Also i did see some chargers are raised on the kerb but there was no dropped kerb next to it which is a bit frustrating. One thing you mentioned and I’ve really noticed is just how heavy the charging cables are, this could be tricky for people with limited muscle strength/range of motion or upper limb amputees. I don’t really know if the ‘powers that be’ have even thought about how the switch to EV’s & their infrastructure will effect people with disabilities and the elderly? Even though Motability contract customers are really being pushed towards the electric car options (£0 deposit) whereas their petrol options are much more limited and expensive (£500-£3k deposits). Access to and around chargers will become a massive issue for fellow wheelchair users and people with disabilities, that cant have home chargers installed due to council regs. Currently Motability do offer a home charging point installation which was a massive selling point for me but I don’t know if they will continue to offer this though 🤞🏻fingers crossed that they do. Theres hardly any information or posts like yours, that show the realities of living with an ev - the good, the bad and the ugly points. Most of them are just showcasing the car and there are none aimed at people with disabilities….not even on the motability website so thank you for doing this living with series. I will let you know how I get on and if theres any tips i learn along the way that may help other wheelchair users 🤗

No worries at all and thank you for sharing your thoughts! I do often have meet ups with my subscribers and if you did ever want to meet up in January 2023 to share your thoughts and experiences I would love to do a film on this. I also have seen nothing on this from an EV perspective so it would be important to address the concerns we have along with sharing the positives too 🙂

How will it sell now that there are quite a few Tesla 3’s coming from leases and on the second hand market?

It's a great little car but quite expensive. Maybe now with what you are saying with the Tesla 3's it will make the Fiat 500e better value now 🤔

Genuinely quite interesting to hear how the experience is, and things like queuing for charging spots is something I hadn’t considered at all. The infrastructure definitely needs to improve but it’s going the right way. As a long term petrol head I’ll probably stick it out a little longer but I’m very open to making the change at some point when hopefully it’s all a bit smoother!

Thank you for your commenting and sharing your points! It is a tricky one for petrolheads and time will tell but for me also as I feel there is a place for both to co-exist together. I don't think either just electric or just petrol is the answer going forward as both have a lot of plus points 👍
