Pugly the halfbreed Defender 130 is powered by a sacrilege Lexus (Toyota) V8 engine.
Did this conversion improve the vehicle or is this now a ruined Defender 130?
We'll let's roll that film to see why I chose a Defender 130 and why this particular engine setup.

Love it, you’ve obviously thought about it in great detail and that shows in the end product. So many conversions aren’t done with reliability and longevity in mind. That’s much harder than dropping an big lump in a vehicle and hoping for the best. Nice work.

Its a great car Hendri, and you heavily influenced my current project - a nut and bolt rebuild of a 110 v8 - but using a re-manufactured 4.8 litre with a GEMs setup, similar to that found in the Range Rover p38. As you say, keeping the engine choice to a relatively factory configuration offers benefits when off grid. Keep the videos coming please, I need them to keep me motivated to keep working on mine, still a long way to go.

That Landy is a Beast...I have opted for 300tdi and TD5 on 2 of my Land rovers. 300TDI on a Series IIa and then stock standard TD5 2000 Defender. The petrol versions I run is a Straight Rover with twin SU's Lovely motor and in a Series III s R6. Currently working on a Series III s with a 308 Holden V8 on a R380 Gearbox and TC. I have also kick to life a Series I 1958 pickup with a 2.25 petrol engine will do a restore there.

Hi Hendri awesome video my man , seriously welldone on such a clean and unique build i am also a huge fan of the UZfe motors and i certainly dont think you ruined that vehicle at all, i would like to just through my 2 cents into the mix.... i would love to see a build with a toyota 1grfe (4.0 v6 dual vvti 210kw ) in an old school setup like yours but i guess one could just buy a 4.0 v6 Toyota land cruiser and call it a day but what would be the fun in that...

Henry, I am super satisfied with my 1UZ in my 97 Pajero LWB. No major issues in 6.5years of lexus ownership, bar annual service and general maintenance items; radiator, waterpump, thermostat housing, etc. It is my daily drive to work, in town consumption is 5-5.5, open road heavy laden with big ORT and 6 people, 6.5-7 at 100-110, and unladen to Oudshoorn and back, (800kms), 8.6km/l at 100! If you push it hard, consumption drops, but wouldn't trade it! PS Would love to meet up and join in a day's fun somewhere in WC.

Its not a sacrilege at all, I always found defenders to be heavily underpowered for my taste, especially if youre building an offroad all-in-one camper. I saw some company that swaps engines, my personal choice would be the 2.8 4 cylinder diesel cummins with 160 hp and around 400 nm (290 lb).This also mostly varries where u are from, for Europe, where im currently at, a BMW engine swap is also not bad. I think you still made an awesome choice, its your car at the end of the day and everyone makes their own personal project. Defenders are cult cars but then again so are Toyota's bulletproof engines. Best of both worlds!

@@pieterbotha5432 mines got 505 915 km on the clock, had a mechanic service it, and the water pump started leaking, blew the head had him do the head over , only to have them reconnect the wiring so close to the head that they caught fire, took it back redid head made Knysna from George and it blew again....took it to another mechanic and it is fine but if something like that happens again it would be around the same price as replacing the engine, because i now need to redo my wiring, dashboard lights don't work anymore since the first mechanic i asked to look it over, thats the reason why i am considering it, but i will leave current engine in until it gives problems again.

a friend of mine in the UK has 800 000 miles on his defender, so i probably just got a bad deal with the servicing at a mechanic that i was recommended to work on Land Rover Defenders, partial to the Isuzu grew up with them in the family imo just as reliable as Toyota.

Make no mistake a proper setup 3UZ Lexus V8 swap is not cheap and the fuel will not match a diesel engine. If I could do it again I would go for the M57 BMW 3.0d (for all round use) which has become very popular recently. I even bought a donor 330d 150kw for this swap but end up selling Pugly due to the work and costs involved to move back to diesel again. I would rather start with a TD5 platform like yours.

Honestly I would suggest sticking with the stock R380 gearbox as your gearing is much better suited with the Defender TC already and less work required. Any reputable machine shop should be able to match up an adapter plate for your engine and gearbox combo of choice. This one was an H151 box

Seems like a good setup for your use and sounds great, I'll stick to my 200Tdi though for low speed off road and messing around in water. I'd recommend putting a cage on that before you roll it on a dune and the cab gets flattened by under the weight. Personally wouldn't touch a Td5, my D2 that I recently sold was a V8 and if the 200Tdi ever needs replacing I quite like the idea of an old 4BT Cummins, maybe a 6BT but they're heavy.
@HendriMouton
@HendriMouton 3 жыл бұрын
The safety concern has definitively kept me from trying some silly things in this Defender, maybe for the best. I'm quite a big fan of the 6BT but fear it will be a bit much for any stock parts on the Defenders.

Petrol engines have a wider usable power band to get the required wheel speed for technical sand driving. Generally they're better suited to sand driving, but the modern turbo diesels have come a long way as well.

The 130 has 1500kg load capacity, not 1000kg. That sets it apart as an overland, because when you load a ton of overland gear (including fuel and water) you're not near the design limitation of the rig/suspension. The only other vehicle which was 1.5t legal road limit was the Ford F250.

Hendri Mouton their are a few people doing this, but I think this is where Ineos made the perfect call for the Grenadier drive train. Supercharged M52B28 will make enough power... and the engines are dirt cheap, and you can easily do a auto conversion with the 4HP22 box. I have a 90 2.8i, and it's awesome

There's nothing wrong with being unoriginal. Each to their own indeed. I've got a Defender 90 with a Cummins 3.8ISF. Ain't nothing like it among its peers. Two of my trucks are swap jobs too. A Tata 407SFC with a 4BT and and old Hino 14-177 with a 6BT. Thanks Hendri for inspiration. Cheers from Durban.
