In this film, Dan explains his 9-year-old son Charlie’s behaviour and how he came to be diagnosed as high functioning autistic. Dan describes the family dynamics, how best to manage Charlie, what his strengths are and his future prospects. Charlie gives an insight into living with autism and shares his thoughts and feelings.

Very interesting. I’m autistic also, I got diagnosed at 16. I was severely self harming and my diagnosis quite literally saved my life. Now I know what I need and how to help myself and have resources to help me.

How did it get diagnosed because I feel like I self diagnosed it for me and idk now how to let my parents know, so I hope they figure it out themselves

@@thethirdeve5089 Basically I was doing research on ADHD, brought it to my psychiatrist and she told me it sounded more like autism. To figure out what it was she sent me to a neuropsych who then did the whole diagnostic process. I would start by presenting your parents with evidence you’ve collected and then to a doctor. It’s harder when they are not as close to you like a psychiatrist, so a therapist would be even better if you have one.

Three years ago; 2020, my interest in Autism was sporadic, disjointed due to lack of education in IT. Your willingness and well thought out introspection about (at least) Charlie; as your treasured son of now 12 (?) is the best educational module (that period in time) that I've listened through. Thank you for that. Recognizing that every Autistic is different and must be interpreted in an entirely different lens was something I inherently knew albeit couldn't yet place in words.

I hated Phonics but it helped me a lot, it covered up a lot of the differences that showed verbally, but it also made it harder for people to be empathetic/ recognize autism in certain situations

Thank you for this revealing look into your lives . It’s very important and helpful to those of us going into careers of working with autistic children and children with other developmental issues . Not knowing which student you may be with day to day , I like to educate myself on all the types of children I may work with . I just want the children in my care to find me to be a safe place for them in public school, which can be very scary for them . Thank you !

Hi, this is such a helpful video, thank you for making it,; being so open and authentic about what you are experiencing and the complexities of handling a growing child. I especially liked how you referred and have identified that sometimes there will be "normal" bad behaviour and other time there will be "Autistic" behaviour. That is a really clear learning point for me. At this stage I don't have an official diagnosis of my child, also aged 9yrs, but a lot of what you portrayed, not all, but sufficient to make me want to continue to get a proper diagnosis, huge thanks. You are making a big difference in peoples education and understanding of what is going on and how to cope. Don't give up. Oh and lots of love 'Dan and Charlie, I know you are a great team.

Being autistic is not something straight as being neurotypical. Our brains just work different, some people are sensitive, some aren't much, most struggle socially, we feel like aliens in this world. Then it just bring more problems like anxiety and depression because of those struggles. I have different friends with Aspergers/ASD too and of course, they are different people, because Personality comes first, and the disorder comes second, plus it doesn't feel exactly the same for everyone. Every single one is different. one of my friends with autism sometimes even shakes when shaking hands with people and another of my autistic friends even though the way he talks is a bit weird, he doesnt feel bad for it and he is really good at socializing, even sings in front of audiences.

Indo Board is also good for stemming and it helps build balancing skills. I love my Indo Board, its meant for surf training.

I met an autistic man who is 67 years old at the gym over a year ago to be precise. He’s initially so hard to approach and even made me feel like he doesn’t like me but it’s not necessarily true. I managed to connect with him and I feel that I want to protect him and be his friend no matter what. I don’t know why. But I feel like he’s a noble man with a good heart and - as a friend - I wish I could be there for him to make him do well and happy. Do I feel compassion? Maybe. But all I know is that I want to make him feel like I am there for him. Yet at times he seems to be kind of second-guessing me or doubting me. It’s a total different experience and I don’t know how to handle it at times.

I can really relate to this, Charlie and my son, who is six and is autistic, have a lot of similar traits. Looking at the time this was posted and hoping you all got through lockdown OK, I am sure it would have been challenging. Would love to hear how Charlie's handwriting is coming along :)

I am not autistic, but find this rater interesting. I was mistaken for it in December of 2020, but knew it was wrong due to what my dad told me about what the psychiatrist said.

To me, time goes slower. Since I don't feel or sound like a man. I feel like i'm still just a kid, still a child to my parents view. They have mentioned us four children of my family, that we are still youngsters to eat too much sugar, fast food, ect. Despite me, and my two brothers being legal of age, we don't feel like older people yet. I am okay being treated like a pampered baby boy child. Time goes very slow in my perspective and view of the world.

I believe my autism was inherited from my father, who was very technically minded but whose behaviour and working life in the 1950s to 1970s saw him at odds with work colleagues, and distant and cold in personal relationships.

i agree with needing an early diagnosed but my problem was my first diagnosed turned out to be wrong, they diagnosed me with adhd and then i was given medication for it, 6 years later we diagnosed again and it turned out to not be adhd but add but the meds continued, then again some years later i FINALLY got a diagnosis from a diffrent person who said i had autism which was around 2019, since then every other professional agreed with this diagnosis and im finally able to learn about what autism is like and how to like learn about myself and tell my parents too about it

a woman by the name Temple Grandin is a very successful because and in spite of autism. She designs slaughter houses for meat production and dramatically improved the ethical standards as well as the function. She is a very charismatic speaker, I really love her

I’m from Sri Lanka and my son is 10 years old who is autistic…due to economic crisis here we have no income for 3 years and his school therapy have stopped for these 3 years. I’m his mother and I really want to start school and therapy for him..please if you can give some kind of economical support I would be very appreciate.. Hi I've just been watching your channel I've been fighting for 5 years to get a diagnosis and we had an assessment we got the diagnosis ASC What you talk about makes so much sense how my son is and has been since he was 3 At this point my son isn't in school he is privately tutored by specialists tutors we have got a school for him to start in a specialist school in September as he was expelled from mainstream due to having no remorse when bullying children and hurting them this has been going on for a few years though We have told our son that he is different to others My son comes in my bedroom in the morning and we talk I've gone through alot of hitting the other day he was spitting at me He does like putting his forehead onto mine We still are unsure what his triggers are He hand flaps having trouble sleeping he says he is bored and not tired it's 10 pm I'm hoping now we have his diagnosis more doors will open Hope you don't mind me mailing You talking about your son just sounded like mine

I'm wondering what it's like for kids who can't speak and at the lower end, to be honest this kid seems like a breeze compared to my child no disrespect I just never see videos and information on the children that are non verbal and have all the issues associated with autism and ADHD
